Learn how to read structural construction drawings in this video. I'll explain how I approach reading a set of structural construction drawings (put together by a structural engineer) as well as focusing in footings, foundations, and structural steel. I'll also briefly explain how structural construction is related to architectural, mechanical, plumbing, and much more. Enjoy!

im glad that this kind of technical explanation on how to interpret structural drawing is made. I'm just starting to learn on how to interpret the connection of drawings between each page like from single line to double line. If for example, i will draw the beam for L1 where will get the information on the steel needed at that particular location? was there a schedule or was it coming from general notes, and then making the section plane or cutting plane how to interpret this as well thanks for your possible reply
@planandspec

Each beam designation should relate back to a schedule describing that material - such as the beam in this example

I'm currently studying CEM in university and your videos help me a lot. I don't know if it's because I'm fairly new to this subject but it often feels like the education curriculum is not structured in the smartest and simplest way at school. I don't know. Maybe it's just the major, or maybe we haven't integrated technology enough, to make things much simpler and faster. It seems ridiculous that one has to jump from drawing to drawing to figure things out. Maybe it's normal and easy for the experienced but there has to be an easier way of doing this. Maybe there's some software out there or maybe it will be up to our generation to make this far less confusing and tedious. Anyways, your videos are great in clearing up a lot of these questions. Keep on the good work.

I felt the exact same way and said the exact same things 15 years ago - courses were structured in blocks that didn’t simplify the process or education. Current market technology and software is limited so the best you’ll get are drawings with hyperlinks and search functions (Procore) and the systems in general are FAR from integrated with to each other. The construction industry is slow to adopt change, so yes - if someone could streamline this all construction could be simplified, but this is understandably an extremely difficult task given the complexity of buildings. All good thoughts - also why Im making these videos to help those now : )

Even if the technology was there, it's always good to have the fundamentals and to have an understanding of how to do your job without technology. You may not always work for a company that uses the latest and greatest, and even then, systems go down, they have bugs, or can barely pass for reliable. When you're faced with technological issues, you need to be able to work without that technology and know what you're doing with the hard copies. I also personally feel like hard copies are superior when looking over something with another party, as you can simply point to something, and you can't have screen glare in the field if you don't have a screen.

Very important knowing the structurals working in the concrete world. It has become a problem more and more because the plans are very unclear and/or are being revised over and over.

I'm looking to secure a quality set of rebar shops that I'd be able to use for this video. I've got a few more videos to make before this but it's on the overall list, no exact timeline but I can update this comment once I'm getting closer to the release date

Thank you for the feedback - someone else commented this as well. I was cutting the breathes during editing (in between talking to shorten the video length) making it sound really fast. Moving forward I'm trying to be more conscious of important pauses.

This is my job to make those drawings. Please tell me what are the worst things a drafter can do. Roast me!
@planandspec
@planandspec 6 месяцев назад
No roasting 😁 but the top two things that it always comes down to are 1) is there sufficient information to build and 2) is the steel coordinated with all the other disciplines - both especially true in a remodel situation (but arguably tougher to nail down). Thank you for your services though 😎
