I adjusted my seating position to his specifications, and what a difference, I feel more stable , more in touch with the car and it's much more comfortable. Keep up the good work Brian !

I constantly battle my wife on her side mirror settings. Half of the mirror is looking at the side of the car. “You know where the side of the car is! It’s right next to you, you don’t need to see it in the mirror!”

Thank you so much for this Brian! It drives me insane the terrible seating positions of the general public. Working at a dealership, I see so many unsafe adjustments when hopping into a car after a customer. I always find them in the Vin Diesel/Matthew McConaughey position with the steering wheel in their crotch. Worse still, dealing with people on the road who either don't have their mirrors adjusted properly or have their hands in a position where they can't even be bothered to use the indicators. Too many issues to list with bad drivers that could be fixed with your advice. Also learned some things myself from this and plan to reassess my own habits. Appreciate videos like this and I plan to share it where I can.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, Brian. I learned these techniques many years ago, through a combination of HPDE schools and experimenting with mirror positioning. The most important setting is for the mirrors to be adjusted so that the combination provides a 180 degree view. One of the most annoying things for me is if the side mirrors are turned too far inward, because it ends up showing multiple images of vehicles behind and to the sides. It’s bad enough to be driving on a multilane highway and having to monitor so many vehicles to the rear and sides, but if the mirrors are adjusted incorrectly, it falsely adds the number of vehicles that are seen. And in an emergency, having to take those extra fractions of a second to process duplicate vehicles in your rear views before making an avoidance maneuver may be just too much to react in time.

Glad this resonated with you. Why do you need to see the sides of your car when you’re driving? 🤣🤣🤣

Wanted to add - after a few days of getting used to this driving position I feel much more comfortable on the road and definitely have finer control over all inputs. The rear view mirror/180degree fov tip has been tremendously helpful as well for making blind spots a thing of the past. Thanks Brian!

And the "funny thing" about having the mirrors correctly adjusted as Brian indicates...those flashing blind spot monitors in your mirrors...are "late" in notifying you of the approaching side traffic...makes those "systems" superfluous...and only exist to "save" the driver who'd rather look as the sides of their vehicle ;-). Decades ago when I was taught to drive, "10 & 2" was the prescribed hand placement even though then, "9 & 3" would give you better control. Now with airbags, "9 & 3" will save your forearms and wrists from a bit of the airbag deployment force..a "bonus benefit"

@@BrianMakse At first I was concerned about being too close to the airbag. After getting over that, it felt like a more engaging drive. Visibility seemed improved and my senses were more active. More of an ability to steer without additional body movement.
@miata1370
@miata1370 27 дней назад
@@SlipAngleG70 The "too close to the wheel for airbag deployment" is often cited as a reason to sit further back...but IMO, IF I'm in a situation where an airbag deploys, I've got much bigger problems than minor injuries from airbag deployment. Much better to have improved car control and hopefully avoid the traffic calamity in the first place.

Feet on the dashboard? How about those sticking out the window? I use your seating position but brace my left leg against the door.

I've driven trucks for many years-- and also a fed bodyguard was trained in defensive driving- and MORE-- by pros, stunt drivers, racers, etc. so iv'e done most of this for years. I can't stand laying down and driving- like some try to do.. and YES- I agree totally on this and the being able to turn 180 without interference. THat's EnOUGh-- you never turn more than that normally anyway.. One thing you didn't mention - as Fed bodyguard I was trained to drive with RIGHT foot accelerator- LEFT foot brake- gives FAR better reaction tim and control... and it's got me out of scrapes many times when on duty.
@BrianMakse
@BrianMakse 7 месяцев назад
You know it. I don't advocate for left foot braking outside a controlled performance driver education environment because I don't want drivers getting the wrong idea on RU-vid and wrecking themselves. Left foot braking is a helpful technique in a lot of situations, but is something that the average driver should avoid.

@@BrianMakse I don't think so---if a driver is TAUGHT that way from the beginning it ELLIMINATES the lag of reflexes and is SAFER...

@@BrianMakse Great video sir. I agree about not training left foot for brake. I have driven most of my life in a manual car and you have to have your left foot for the clutch. when slowing down or coming to a stop you need your left foot for clutch and your right foot for brake. When I get into a automatic I still use my right foot for both gas and brake.

One of the overlooked detrimental distraction can be your pet. Keep the dog, cats, whatever your companion is, in a cage. Do not just let it get in your personal space in any circumstances!
