Divide the left by the right. a^2 + ab + b^2 = 3. Square the right: a^2 -2ab + b^2 = 81. Subtract one from the other: -3ab = 78.

yay, I solved it. I used the formula of (a-b) ^3 = a^3 - b^3 - 3ab(a-b), which is a better fit for the problem. It was a very easy "plug-and-chug" with that formula. ab has an easy plug, and (a ^3 - b^3) is also an easy plug.

Simpler to use the identity (a - b)³ = a³ - b³ - 3ab(a - b).

Well, I discovered the hardest way to solve this. I ground through the equations and ended up with B^2 + 9B + 26 = 0. Solving with the quadratic formula results in B = -4.5+2.398i. This results in A = 4.5+2.398i. Thus AB = -26. So, that’s how you solve the problem slowly.

I solved this question like you but you have finished this question with equation when you find b^2 + 9b + 26. So b^2+9b= -26. a-b=9, so a=b+9. Finally,(b+9). b= b^2+9b which is equal to -26. Likely you tried the formula discriminant but without any transformation you can find reponse

There's another way to solve: We have: (a - b)^3 = a^3 - 3a^2b + 3 ab^2 - b^3 So: a^3 - b^3 = (a - b)^3 + 3a^2b - 3ab^2 = (a - b)^3 + 3ab(a - b) Therefore: 27 = 9^3 + 3ab*9 27ab = -702 ab = -26

As an extension of the above problem consider the following: Find all real pairs (a,b) and the restriction on y that satisfies: (a^3 - b^3 = y^3) and (a - b = y^2). At 12.30 in the morning is not the best time to solve maths problems, however the substitution method was not the way to solve it.So started again using the cube root and square root formulas and so I solved it.Never again at this hour again.

Very nice solution. I first found the solution of a²+b² We know that a²+b² = (a-b)² +2ab We also know that a-b = 9 Substituting the equation , 9² + 2ab = 81 + 2ab Therefore , a²+b² = 81+2ab We know that , a³-b³ = (a-b) (a2+ab+b²) and a³-b³ = 27 Therefore , a³-b³ = 27 (a-b) (a²+ab+b²) = 27 9 (a²+ab+b²) = 27 a²+ab+b² = 27÷9 a² + ab + b² = 3 a²+b² = 3-ab As a²+b² = 81-2ab 81-2ab = 3- ab ab+2ab = 3-81 3ab = -78 ab = -78÷3 = -26

I was interested to use the answer that ab = -26 in order to calculate the values of a & b. We are told that a - b = 9 Therefore b = a - 9 Substituting for b in the answer ab = -26 We get a (a - 9 ) = -26. Not solvable, but worth a try.

This is what was getting me! I could get to the -26 (once I was reminded of how to to the algebra hahah) but I have been used to using the “key” I was given to check my work and I couldn’t come up with any two numbers that multiplied to become -26 but could be subtracted to be 9 😭

I solved it by cubing a - b = 9 on both sides and then substituting the given values.. a^3 - b^3 - 3ab (a-b) = 729 ( After cubing on both sides) Good problem anyways..

In order to bring some portion into (a-b)^2 pattern, ab is replaced by -2ab+3ab whose net is ab only.

@@ssjbevegeta3008 I just tried to answer Carlino's statement based on this video. Yeah i got -26 too.. ab = {(a³ - b³) - (a-b)³} / 3(a-b) ab = (27 - 9³)/3(9) ab = 27/ 27 - 9³/27 ab = 1 - 27 ab = -26
