Inspiring!! Here lies a dichotomy, music isn’t about playing scales, major and minor, the different modes, music isn’t about learning boring dry theory. Making music is about...well playing music. So...how do we play music? We learn major and minor scales, we learn modes, we learn the boring and dry theory because that is where musical creativity lives; and that little phrase, that tiny gem of knowledge that contains a wealth of experience that Dan places in this video, is...”take all of this and play around with it” The day I stumbled upon Dan Hawkins channel was the day I really started to play bass. Thank you Dan!!

Hey Dan, can't emphasize enough how valuable your lessons are. Great you did a whole video on this topic, seems some of us struggle but I can tell it works very good. I've developed some pretty col bass lines that way and boosted my creativity a lot. It surely needs more and more practicing, I still have to think and my muscle memory and automatism is not at the point where I don't have to think about it anymore but it will come, I'm sure of that and want to thank you again 😊

Nice illustration of applying the fundamentals Dan! For me to learn all of the theory relative to my bass guitar playing, it took a couple of years of committed effort. It’ll be a lifetime and then some of exploring how to apply it. That’s one of the great things of being a musician. Being a student of the arts never stops until the individual does.

“The intermediate stuck putting everything together”; that’s me I think. I know a fair amount of theory and scales, but applying it has been challenging. I think the key, as Dan points out, is to start getting creative just by “messing around” with what you know. Experimenting, if you will. Sort of trial and error. I think a great way to do this is by playing a backing track and just have at it. Something I know I should do, but being in a cover band, just learning the song takes up most of my time. However, it could be hindering my progress as a bassist because I’m having the time to just get creative and find out what works and what doesn’t work.

Beautiful playing Dan. Like many of your devotees I hear music in many exercises. And in life in general, when I worked at the treatment plant I would hear music in the mechanical cacophony of running machinery.Cheers.

Hallo Dan!Thank you for the inspiring lesson!I`m struggling exactly with the topic.I learned all my scales and modes and from your book I play the 7th chords in the major scale over and over and it feels pretty secure now...but I don't know how to put it into music....maybe I really book your online course but as a full-time working Dad I'm a little bit afraid of my time management.I have the feeling I know the technique how to climb a wall, but I don't know to do the first steps.......I love your videos, they help me a lot to continue my bass journey!Stay save Niko from Germany

Thanks Dan another informative lesson. As I have stated before you have a way of teaching that makes sense to me. One question do you have a course in music theory? And if you do is it out? Thanks again keep up the awesome work!!

Thanks very much, Tony. I do have a comprehensive theory course planned and I’ll start on it after an upcoming Soul bass course and rock bass book. It’s going to be fun! If you have topics you want me to cover, send a message to dan@onlinebasscourses.com.
