I'm very fast at drawing notes with a mouse that often I dont even bother pluging in My midi keyboard. I'm not bad at playing piano just I feel it's not actually necessary while producing. Another thing I sometimes do is just play the keys play anything in any random key in time to the click track, then just move the notes with a mouse because all I want is the realistic time and after Touch or velocity. I sometimes just click one line of notes and build cords and melodys from that, sounds like it was played.
Started self learning ending of February Cmaj and Inversions. Working on Cmin now. Inversions was tricky at first cause my brain was programmed to play up the scale. What helped me the most was learning the Key of C in Roman numbers. Like a 1 5 6 4 progression.
Thanks nephew. I'm in my 50s and I've been making beats for a year now. I love using melody loops but with all the crap going on with these royalty free stuff not being royalty free I've been trying to teach myself chords to create my own progressions. I stumbled across your video and I'm so happy I decided to watch! I was actually doing some of the stuff you mentioned like the one chord at a time and overdubbing. You showed me with this video that I'm definitely on the right track. And the sustain pedal is something I probably would have never considered. Appreciate your skills so very much.
Im at that point now , i started beat making like 7 months ago and just started to self learning the piano. Imo its essential for a producer to play the keys. That way you can use any instrument voice on a keyboard/synth ( sax , guitar , strings etc ) Ofcourse the real ones are better but you can lay down basic notes/chords using the voice of those instruments. Hooe you have more videos on this
@@somethingcatchy4795 to learn making beats , i watched lot of youtube video's and practice and repeat a lot. But i always had that feel for rythmn , like most of us i think. Music is a passion for most if us , so we know rhytmn but not the theory behind it. And how i learn to play keys , im still figuring that 1 out . Reading music theory books , watch video' s , using flowkey app and now melodics app , latter is much better for producers. Because those other apps focus more on traditional piano and sheet music. I was struggling with sheet music but i dont need that , its not my goal to play songs from sheets. I want to learn chords progressions and improv to put on my beats, and if im not on time ot make mistake thats fine cuz i play as midi and can correct it. I can learn sheet music later if want to , so switched to melodics , plus the music in there is more from my gen. Anyway , im still a beginner , but i think its a must as (aspireing) producer to learn playing keys. Cuz if you have a melody in ur head (or the artist) , you need to know how to play in order to translate that into sound.
