Hello, want to help me surprise my girlfriend's family when I show up to Brazil in 6 weeks speaking Fluent Portugese? I have a degree in linguistics, used to teach English in China, and Portugese if I really learn it would be my 7th language :)
“Ele não se lembra de mim” translates to “He no if remember of me” when I translate it in my head. I’ve been studying Portuguese for 9 years now and I’ve visited Brasil 18 times but I still can’t read or converse and I have to translate everything into English one word at a time to understand. I’ve been practicing every day for 6 years with my girlfriend who only speaks Portuguese but I still can’t understand her except for an occasional word which I then have to translate.
You're probably just trying to take on too much memorization at once less is more, I find that it helps to learn a few words at a time and get familiar sometimes practicing the words or also phrases for days
@@anthonyprince452 thanks. I’ve never been able to learn phrases. I’ve always had to translate every word. I’ve never been able to learn several words at a time like you suggested. It’s a big problem. I recognize the words as words that I know when I see or hear them but they don’t mean anything to me until I translate them. Even basic words don’t mean anything to me like “aqui” or “agora” and things like “bom dia” and “tudo bem” had to be translated for years before I could understand them without translating based on the context of them being used when I greeted people.
