Man, I feel your pain when it comes to tea :) I started drinking tea instead of coffee thanks to my wife who is Russian. Growing up in Serbia I never knew tea can be so enjoyable. If you would offer my dad cup of tea he would be like: Why? I’m not sick 😅 We are currently spending summer in Serbia, and the amount of green tea we brought with us from Russia is raising some eyebrows at the airport :) Love your channel btw. Hi Max. Interesting observations. Drinking coffee is a sort of ritual for us, it brings us together socializing with our neighbors, relatives, friends, colleagues. We grew up with our moms drinking Turkish coffee with neighbors then telling fortune and destiny from the bottom of the cup:) When it comes to coffee size I think Russians have been Americanized. The first time I heard about americano was from Russians and I was like wtf is americano!:) Nowdays lot of households have small espresso machines especially younger population. When it comes for young people living with their parents longer than usual there are 2 reasons. First, economically, it is expensive to live on your own, we are a poor country ,and second, our ancestors lived in ''rodovima'' ( rod ) and it was normal for our grandparents and great grandparents to live together on one property helping each other. Today a lot people are living in houses with 3 generations on each floor. Keeping together is very important for us but not practical at the same time as per generation differences. As for the bank, well you are a foreigner so banks are naturally more strict in that regard. Serbia is a small country so transport by busses is just fine. Railway is devastated after the wars, imposed western economic sanctions 1992 - 1996 , NATO bombing 1999. There is simply not money in the budget. But the fact we are still smiling and kicking is amazing. Enjoy your stay in Serbia!

Tea in Serbia is used mostly for medical issues. And for that you can buy in any store any kind of tea and its used very often. For example i rarely drink chinese tea for joy but i take often hajdučka trava for my stomach issues and it fixes it almost immediately. Tea's are used for treating among people for centuries and that memory is kept among people til present days.

What a complete help you give us! You confirm my idea that ordinary Russians think like ordinary Americans. It seems Serbians are. honest, meat eaters, coffee drinkers, smokers, users of cafes and restaurants, fairly balanced with work time versus leisure time, at home with family. Serbians, in other words, are like people in Southern Europe from Turkey to Greece to Italy, to Portugal. Well, what were those lands nearby called: YUGOslavia, South Slavia?! It must be the added sunshine that accounts for the difference. Keep up your good work!

Serbia has some similarities to Russia but Serbia has a lot of Mediterranean/Greek influence on the culture and everyday life. Serbia was also a part of Ottoman Empire for 500 years so there is some Turkish influence as well. Respect to our Russian brothers 🇷🇸🤝🇷🇺☦️☦️

Your observation about foreign languages is also true, I've been stunned many times traveling Europe how small percentage of people can speak English, and they would have a very thick accent. People in Serbia have a much more comprehensible accent, I would say.

I think when they write why Russians and Serbs love each others and then they mention similar cultures it is actually totally wrong reason. I used to travel in Russia and it was wonderful experience but you sum up pretty much all the things which I noticed too as a Serb. I think Serbs are more straightforward, very open for conversations and more warm if I could put it on this way. Contrary Russians on the first hand have that suspicion barrier which I notice from conversations with almost everyone but once that barrier is crossed Russians may become your friends for life ready to die for you (and this is not overextension). It would be more truth to say that Russians are close to us by their inner spirit and soul so this is why people love love them here. P.S. They started to built Metro recently despite large protests although plans for Belgrade metro exists for 100 years already. That project would be disaster because they plan to place huge station in Makiš which is one of the main water reservoir for Belgrade and by it they will destroy whole eco system or what is left from it. Unfortunately our politicians are puppets and ministers are pure joke, enough to say that our "Minister of Construction" never had anything to do with this job but was Hotel Receptions and was whole life in Tourism (you could place politic as additional point)! What local politicians had done to this people is damage that we will fix for centuries.

Hey, I was actually thinking the same about why our buses are shaking even though the roads are OK and even if you ride on a new bus. The answer to that is our street sewage systems, that leave these grids on the sides of the roads (and usually that's the track that buses use) and then when a wheel goes over that grid it makes the bus shake. As for the tea, we only drink it here when we are sick and have stomach problems :p

I don't think it's really necessary to apologize for the criticism. Criticism is useful and anger as reaction is nothing else than a reflection of immaturity. This whole situation regarding sanctions are so unfair to common Russians that it is almost unbelievable... But we went trough similar situation here, 20 + years ago. I think it is not easy for the Russians to adapt here, regardless of our friendly attitude towards you... You made a good points :). I have to agree with everything... It was very funny to see how You are able to analyse us with such level of accuracy after spend relively short time here :)... This is not the first time that we received a large number of Russians and Ukrainians, who came more or less with the intention of staying here longer. A similar thing happened after the Bolshevik revolution, when a large number of Russians (mostly from the Oddessa region) and Ukrainians (Malorussians) who did not agree with the what was happening in their country, came in Serbia to live and work. Of course, then Ukrainians did not have an anti-Russian attitude, and we did not distinguish between you :)... History has shown that many of these people contributed to the development of civil society in Serbia, in terms of culture and art. It's nice to see that you follow that tradition, your wife and you, and promote our country in a beautiful way :)... Serbia is a rather poor country and the poor infrastructure and transportation is a reflection of that. Maybe something is changing about it at the moment, but in essence it is even worse than you described. I guarantee it. Especially if we are talking about smaller places... This is why public intercity transport is rarely used here. People prefer to travel by car or not at all. I only got on a train in Serbia once in my life. As high school student, I traveled by train to a guitar festival in Zaječar :)... You are absolutely right about the coffee and tea. I was working part-time for a Russian agency in Sarajevo and I noticed that you drink tea like Turks :). For me, the meaning of coffee is not in coffee as a drink, but in socializing, with yourself and the newspaper or with friends. That's why I only buy coffee to take away if I know I'll be sitting somewhere without coffee, and never drink it when walking (it is a blasphemy almost :) )... American coffee is not real coffee, but some pale liquid that resembles coffee :). Maybe then should put some coffee in it... I think that smoking in public places in Serbia is just as prohibited as in most other countries. Only, that law is not respected here at all (it is similar in Bosnia). Serbian families were traditionally multigenerational. That was often not a such good solution :). People in the countryside practiced such a way of life, when labor was needed. However, although today some people try to follow such a tradition and build huge family houses, they are more and more often empty. Their children are in the West, trying to earn a decent living (and usually don't come back)... Except during holidays. Yes, digitalization is very much needed if we speak about huge numbers of users of services. Things are starting to change on this issue here as well, but You have a right... As someone said - the procedure is a bit more complicated for you because you are a non-resident... Anyway, thanks for the observations. Thank you for representing our country in a nice and realistic way. I wish you a pleasant stay/life in Serbia and many more subscribers :), just as I wish peace and freedom for the people of Donbass, Odessa, Zaporozhye, without Nazism and without "help" from Western "friends". Hi, Max. As a Belgrader, thank you very much for wonderful video. A lot of the stuff you said really is true. Smoking is part of the culture and even though I'm used to cigarette smoke from an early age, it's really ugly do see cigarette butts all over the place... You're absolutely right about the coffee. It's like a ritual, almost. In the morning, before work, especially if you work from the office, you go to a Cafe, get a coffee and drink it, SLOWLY. Emphasis on the slowly. That's basically how people in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania get prepared for work XD And it can last for some time XD Regularly, we invite our family and friends, out and over, with the sentence : Ај, дођи на кафу. ( Come over for a coffee) Which means a nice coffee drink x something sweet on the side. And pleasant conversation. For a couple of hours. You could be in the middle of working on something and unless there's an important deadline, there's always time for кафа. Tea, on the other hand, is reserved for when you're sick, most of the time XDD Or when you want a warm drink during the winter or just to relax. But nothing too complicated. What i really like about Russian tea culture is the diversity of teas and the samovars. I'll make sure to buy one when I visit Russia one day. Unfortunately, train infrastructure has deteriorated since the fall of Yugoslavia. Although, as far as I know, we were always more reliant on busses than trains. But I think it'd getting a little better. Also the Belgrade Bar train line, for years, is notorious for being a living hellscape. For years... Up side: It's cheap, You can even get your car transported in a car wagon. Down sides : TAKES FOREVER Notorious for breaking down Really hot in the summer, when it's used the most because people are going to the seaside. However, there's a huge fast railway plan from Budapest all the way to Niš, down south. Belgrade - Novi Sad is just the first phase. 😁 Those new railway tracks are Russian made. 😁🚂 I truly hope you're having a good time 😁 BTW, how do you find reading Serbian Cyrillic?

Most things are spot on. Regarding transportation, I'll start with trains first. The trains worked well until 1999 when the tracks were bombed in several locations, the country was under sanctions and the trains and tracks were practically abandoned and buses were used more. But that is slowly changing now, the Belgrade - Novi Sad railway has been renovated and modernized, and the speed has been increased from the previous 50 km/h to 200 km/h, and new Swiss Stadler Kiss double deckers and Stadler flirt trains were purchased and more is being planned. The Belgrade Novi Sad railway is part of the modernization of the railway which connects four of Serbia's largest cities, Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and Subotica, and connects Serbia with Hungary and Greece. The railway line Novi Sad - Subotica is in the process of renovation and modernization right now, and some parts towards Niš have started with renovation. Belgrade does not have a metro, even though it was planned decades ago, something would always get in the way of implementation, but the metro finally started construction this year and the first two lines are planned to be ready by 2028 (first) and 2030 (second). Belgrade has a kind of semi-metro "Beo Voz" (commuter rail) that connects the suburbs with downtown Belgrade, modernization and 4 new lines are planned. Buses work well throughout the country and there are all kinds of them, both old and new, and Belgrade and Novi Sad also have electric ones but the buses that go from one city to another city are much more modern than those that go only inside the city. Belgrade also has trams and trolleybuses and there are plans to buy new ones as well as build and extend new tram lines. Trams also existed in Novi Sad, Subotica, Niš and some other cities, but the government in the former Yugoslavia removed them for unknown reasons. As for tea, people in Serbia usually use tea when they are sick or in winter to warm up and these are usually chamomile, mint, thyme, milfoil, green tea, etc. In the east of our country there is a pearl of nature - Stara planina, where there are 1195 species of known plants, among which there are also wild types of fruits and medicinal plants, as well as on other mountains such as Rtanj, where you can find herbalists and various medicinal teas, teas are also can be found in "zdrava hrana (health food)" stores. Drinking coffee in cups while talking with family, friends, colleagues, etc. is our traditional ritual, the cups may be small but that is because the coffee in Serbia is quite strong. Regarding the digital services of the banks, I did not have any problems, but there may be differences with the local population and foreigners regarding those services. As for alcohol, Serbs like to drink a lot (especially rakija - serbian brandy, beer, wine...), but it is not part of our culture to be drunk in the middle of the street, people have a limit or if they get drunk, they always have a friend or family member with them to bring them safely home. In terms of security, Serbia is a fairly safe country and is safer than almost all Western European countries, which have become extremely unsafe, especially for women, although during Yugoslavia it was even safer and almost no one locked the front door. I love almost all of the listed things about Serbia they make it unique and its own, except for smoking and transport (which is already slowly improving). What I would like for us to apply from Russia is cleanliness and the fact that there is almost no graffiti at all, Russia is even cleaner than all European cities, the cleanliness of the huge cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg amazes me, I don't know if you have special laws for that.

It is very important for me to both see and hear your spoken words. Thank you. I have been in a great many classes where the vocab is always the same. I love how you just walk and talk. No script...yes you thought about what you wanted to talk...but no script. Lastly, while you may talk a little slower it is never dragging out. it is like a conversation. Привет из Сербии. Можна бит разница в чае, то что у нас чаем називаетса каждаја сушенаја трава, не толко зелени чаи. У нас традициа пит такие чаи, а зелени не так часта. Извини что у менја не рускаја клавиатура :)

В Белграде есть Кућа чаја (Дом чая), где можно найти самые разные сорта чая, включая китайские, индийские и другие. У них есть несколько магазинов в городе.

Привет, я из Сербии. Я сейчас объясню все пункты 1) Транспорт У нас только строят метро, нельзя сравнивать Белград с Москвой. Метро очень дорогая инвестиция и нам не так нужен метро так как на автобусе можешь дойти до любого пункта. Остальные города по меньше очень маленькие и везде можно пешком. В Белграде и Новом Саде есть и автобус и трамвай и троллейбусы. 2) кофе. Да у нас много пьют кофе и он и где-то называется турецкий где-то домашний. 3) чай мы больше пьём когда болеем. Поэтому у нас нет много качественного чая 3) что касается свободы слова, у нас если ты не доволен чем то то мы забастовку устраиваем. Нам не особо нравится прайз, парад свободной ориентации. 4) слава, да это семейный праздник. У нас просто очень верят в Бога и все праздники связанные с Богам большое уважают чем обычные праздники 5) курение, я согласна с этим очень много курят и везде можно 6) безопасность, у нас и безопасность конечно хорошая, но у нас много цыган и беженцы из Сирии, вот они могут напасть, укрась 7) да мы улыбаемся и мы каждого с уважением относимся. 8) алкоголь, с этим я тоже согласна, есть большое таких люден в маленьких городах 9) банк. У нас электронные банки и все только сейчас развивается

Belgrade have both trams and trolleybuses, you mentioned only buses.There are newer buses but some are old. For Chinese tea in Belgrade the best place is Chinese shopping center in New Belgrade. Very few people drink tea on daily basis here, coffee is the main choice of everyone, as someone noted we drink tea when we are ill or during winter

Про чай прямо-таки боль 😃 Я фанат чая, кофе не пью вообще. И помню прекрасно эту же беду в Испании, когда мы там жили. Заходим в их местный Ашан, который у них звался Alcampo, а там огрооооомный отдел с кофе, потеряться можно. И крошечный закуток с полкой с невкусным непонятным чаем. Про курение - жуть. Такое в РФ было в мои подростковые годы, лет 20 назад. Помню, как мы ходили в рок-бар на концерты, приходили домой, а у нас даже, прошу прощения, носки и трусы насмерть пропахли. Я некурящая, и для меня это было ужасно.

Good points, I will remember them when I travel to Serbia. Humans have habits which become their second nature. If all countries were exaclty the same then it would be very boring to travel internationally. What looks like a small sized coffee to you is good enough for serbs.In the same way when Americans travel to Europe the first thing they think of is that "why everyone here drives such a small car?" And then they notice the price of petrol in Europe😊

Well, you know, I am a Serb, and after your introduction I prepared myself for some quite unpleasant things that are going to follow. But no, everything you said about us is simply true, and so I think it safe to suppose that all your observations about Russia are accurate, as well. Actually, I know from my own experience, it is far from simple to get accustomed to a new country, and you sound quite lively enough, in spite of that still very fresh experience :) Thank you for another very nice video. There is no metro in Serbia because everywhere u go u need about 15-20 minutes, 30-40 if u live somewhere really far. So mostly people are using bus or a tram, which is pretty fast and convenient. Most of people in Serbia have cars and by car u can reach anywhere in the city within 10mins, in capital within 35 mins if u catch a traffic jam. Just from city to another city is like 25 mins by car, why do we need a metro 😄 I don't live in Serbia, i live in China, Guangzhou, they have over 20 metro lines just in this city and I'm using it every day, here is convenient for the metro because streets are too crowded, city is huge with population over 20-25 million, but in Serbia is completely opposite.

Што се рада тиче, више се ради у Србији него нпр.у Немачкој (знам јер живим тамо) само су плате мале нажалост у Србији и радници ван државног сектора нису заштићени никако.

As for the banking, I think that the situation depends on the bank itself, with my bank I only had to go in person to open an account a and to pickup a new card, everything else I do using the app or the website. It could be that your bank has the options you're looking for, but does not advertise or inform people about them.

I did not remember order of your points so I will answer on some by order in which I remember them. But firstly let me say it is very honest and objective, all that you said. Now, let me explain to you and maybe other people who plan on relocating to Serbia few of the thing you talked about. 1. Administration and banks - as a foreigner in Serbia paper work is huge and you must show at least once personaly for all documents you need,and after that you can appoint a lawyer or representative to do it for you. Banks for account openings, police for visa purpose etc will ask for personal attendence in order to comfirm that you are who you claim to be. Online it can't be 100% sure it is the person who's documents are sent the real person who is asking for those documents. There are possibilities to, lets nicely say trick the system online. And trust me if there is a chance to trick the system we will very fast know it and use it, and many shady foreigners try to exploit it. I was working for international company on foreigners questions and issues of relocation, documents, visas, accounts, taxes etc. It seems as a lot for you but is a good practice for a state. 2. Banks work times-there must be 1 of the branches of your bank in the center of Belgrade, New Belgrade or Zemun that is open till 7 pm. It is a rule. And you can do most of the things online after you open an account. But unfortunately most Western banks with well developted online systems and options are not willing to open an account to a Russian citizens. They will not tell you openly, but you will always need another document and that paper and this paper until you give up. There are , on the other hand, some banks that can give you that option if you know how to do it and know people. I did it for few of my new Russian neighboors as a welcome to Serbia. 3. Был я в Белграде в 1972 году . Дружные люди. Встретил с неким-то Борисом, журналист в Сербским журнале «Политика», который меня дал ночлежку в своей квартире пока я там. Он меня показал самая знаменательная улица в столицу, приятная улица кафе и деревьев ( к сожалению забью имена )

подскажите, а открывают счета в Сербии без документов на резиденство? есть опыт какой лучше? или потом будет сложно переводы получать, если приложения плохо работают?

Interesting observations! Just a quick tip if you feel like getting some tea: look for specialty tea stores (čajdžinica )such as "Kuća čaja" or "Small Tree". Quality tea is not in general stores because it's not very popular to drink it, as you already saw. Also you can check out any "zdrava hrana" store. These stores are for organic foods, healthy food, bulk things. usually also very cheap. If the store is well equipped, you can usually find some nice teas even though the asortiment leans more towards local + health-focused tea All the best!

I was also very surprised about English level of Serbians, even their accent was quite good. I have a question though: How did you find Serbian language, for me it is very close. What is your impression?

1. Транспорт, практично је све тачно што си рекао, додуше у Београду је напокон почео да се гради метро, и прва линија се може очекивати негде за 3-4 године, као и брзи пруга која наставља да се гради до Суботице и границе за Мађарском, али да железница је у очајном стању, возови су стари и често прљави, ситуација са аутобусима често није много боља и осим Београда ни један град нема чак ни трамваје, и ако су раније имали. 2. Слобода изражавања, делимично си у праву, а делимично не. Можда све изгледа лепо као странцу који живи ту 4 месеца, али није баш тако, као ни по питању демократије, али ако се посматра тренутно ванредно или "ратно" стање у Русији и стање у Србији онда да, овде тренутно постоји већа слобода изражавања. Увек кажем да је за сагледавање нечег, најбоље гледати из више различитих перспектива, и "некад се од дрвета не види шума", зато кад се и оцењује стање неког друштва осим унутрашњег добро доће и спољашњи "feedback" и онда са погледима из више перспектива можеш донети прецизнији суд. Срби имају 101 разлог да подржавају Русију, и то најмање има везе са Путином или Украјином то су унутрашње ствари и конструктивна улога Русије у нашим односима (и ако остављам простора да иста да Русија није конструктивна са неким другим држава и да они имају другачија искуства са Русијом) и то је можда веома важно да разумете, просечан Србин "навија или воли" из различитих разлога и побуда Путина/Русију/Русе и сигурно нема везе са тим како је стање корупције, бирократије, слободе или нечег другог на локалу у Русији. Такође се надам да ћемо успети упркос ужасним притисцима са свих страна и претњама санкцијама да останемо "неутрални" и да не уводимо никакве санкције Русији, као и да прихватимо и пожелимо добродошлицу било коме из Белорусије, Украјине и Русије, без обзира на политичку оријентацију или било које ставове, све док ти људи имају минимум поштовања и уважавања за Србију. 3. "Људи у Србији проводе више времена са породицом", на ово не знам прави одговор, мислим да је веома индивидуално, ако долазиш из великог руског града у мањи српски град онда се вероватно може стећи такав утисак, не знам ни сам, шта је тачан одговор да на то питање. Што се тиче слава, да то је један од најважнијих дана за већину људи у Србији и већина слави славе, где се долазе рођаци, породица, пријатељи, поготово су популарне славе Свети Никола, Свети Јован на зиму, када се споје са осталим новогодишњим празницима, онда Срби практично непрекидно нешто славе од 19. децембра до краја Јануара. 😁 4. Да, кафу практично сви пију, и утисак већине странаца било да долазе из Америке, Русије или Западне Европе је "кад ови људи раде?", јер су запрепашћени количином кафића у којима људи седе и пију кафу или нешто друго, и генерално вероватно на целом Балкану се живи спорије у односу на остатак Европе или Русије. Такође скоро па сваки град или место у Србији ће имати, корзо или кафиће, кафане, ресторане или посластичарнице у центру града где људи поготово лети могу да седе и пију кафу, једу или разговарају и то је веома популарно код нас, било код младих тако и код старијих људи. Лично, ја највише волим турску/црну/домаћу кафу која се нажалост не може баш свуда наручити у граду, поготово у "fancy" кафићима, где углавном служе еспресо, макијато, и разне друге кафе, али турска кафа је ипак нешто специфично што се ретко може пронаћи у Западној Европи. 5. Чај, он није толико популаран код нас као на пример у Русији или Турској, али ту и тамо пијемо и чај, можда много више преко зиме и кад смо евентуално када смо прехлађени, болесни или тако нешто, али овако спонтано да неко дође у кафић или на неки састанак и да наручи чај, ретко... 6. Пушење, све си тачно рекао. Иначе пошто сада доста Руса или Украјинаца праве влогове о животу у Србији, приметио сам да сви ово спомињу, а такође ово је случај и са туристима или странцима са Запада који су такође изненађени овим, јер је пушене строго регулисано у њиховим земљама, а и цигарете су веома скупе. Имамо и чак неке законе, поготово што морамо да их усклађујемо са прописима ЕУ, али то је практично мртво слово на папиру, и важи само у теорији, често се може у кафићима наћи сто за пушаче директно поред стола за непушаче који нису ни на један једини начин одвојени један од другог, просто је комично, али је тако... хд Проблем је што су то навике људи, које се јако јако тешко мењају и веома споро, и самим тим спровођење таквих мера осим што негде може бити непрактично и скупо (кафићи) често је и непопуларно код великог броја људи, али ја се слажем са тобом. 7. Безбедност у целој Србији, мада ово је правило за већину земаља на Балкану је веома добро, и људи се осећају безбедно. Када сам путовао по Италији, Немачкој, Чешкој па чак и Мађарској био сам изненађен да виђам стално војнике и специјалце "наоружане до зуба" у пуној опреми по трговима, улицама. То је наравно последица тероризма и великог броја напада, који су се дешавали и у Русији и у Западној Европи. Хвала Богу, ми таквих проблема немамо. И оно што примећују, поготово Американци али и неки други западњаци, јесте да се у већини случајева овде можеш шетати сам по граду у 2 или 3 ујутро после изласка без проблема, као и да нема некаквих "забрањених делова града" који се избегавају или у које се не залази... То је чест случај на западу, поготово у Америци, да ли тога има и у Русији не знам.

Actually u can do anything at home by your bank app, but many people in Serbia just don't do this. Also we drink tea but not so much in cafe. There is so many serbian teas but we do not drink chinese tea, indian, ... and we do it at home. In most cases we drink tea when we got ill 😅 But everything else is one hundred procent true. Great video. Born and raised in Belgrade, and having lived in it most of my life, I confirm all individual points, I think I would tell most of them probably in the same words as you did. I've never been to Russia so I can't say anything about the comparison to Russian way of life. I've also never had a lesson of Russian in my life, but the way you speak is so clear and at a foreigner-friendly pace, that I could actually understand 80% without having to look at the English subtitles. I want to also add that not only did the Serbian government say that all immigrants from all Slavic countries are welcome, but this is even more so the opinion and feeling among us, the everyday people. Everyone I know keeps saying "To su sve nasa slovenska braca", they are all our Slavic brothers, since the first day the fire conflicts started. Most people here feel genuine compassion for all persons going through the similar suffering that we, the South Slavic people, were made to go through in the 90s. We hope that it all ends quickly and with least pain possible for everyone.
