In this video you'll learn a new, experimental approach to to learn saxophone altissimo. If you want to learn how to play altissimo on saxophone, then the hardest part is the first few notes above high F#. Solve this problem by trying to hit some much higher notes and work DOWN, rather than trying to work your way UP. You might be surprised! You'll learn how to do this with 3 different fingerings.

Back in the 60s, I was playing alto, and my idea of altissimo, not from being taught by anyone, was to open up all the left hand palm keys, squeak and control the pitch by embouchure. Nice that you give an acknowledgment to Sirvalorsax.

Nice! I'd been having issues with the G, too. It was frustrating. I could easily hit it on also keding the 1 3, 1 3 fingering. And I was able to hit other notes in tenor with relative ease. other notes were easier to hit. I'd been using only the fork key. I did find that adding the side Bb helped along with making sure my reeds were strong enough. But i still wasn't able to hit it 100% of the time on all of my setups. I've found using the left first finger (B) and right hand high F# sharp key (not the trill key) to be much easier. I can hit it almost all the time with that fingering. Try that if you're still having issues I still wanna work in the Fork/side Bb fingering as it sounds a tad fuller. But B/high F# is a good substitute in the meantime Best of luck!

I just started working on altissimo about a week ago on tenor and just *finally* got a front-f altissimo G out (by adding the G# key). Now, all of the sudden, higher notes are starting to get more accessible. But that first G was "elusive" to put it nicely. Also - my apologies to all of the dogs in the neighborhood - lol.

That G and G# for me are still weird. I finally got G by not using the octave key, and G# is still weird. Then, funny, a harder reed and both come out fine but the higher notes are harder. Long story short, I think those notes need a setup (tract reed bore) that play well together. Imo cheers

Finally a different way to approach and apprehend the dreaded and yet amazing altissimo. I love the idea to explore all the notes we can come up with on a single fingering. I like the idea to insist on the "squeeks" instead of avoiding them and then get the help of the piano or tuner to fine tune it. Of course ! I can't wait to try that.

Thank you Jamie for this video! The altissimo register has been a MAJOR source of frustration for me because I feel like I should've been able to play these notes a loooong time ago, but all I ever get is pure Donky and squeaks. I've only worked on the G note, and I was getting the D Donkey and the high D. If I really bite down I'd squeeze out the note above the D, but I'm still struggling to get the dang G to come out. If I cheat and just vent the front F key open, I can get the G. But thanks for the encouragement that I need to continue to embrace the squeaks until I can break into the attic from the roof. Great video man!! LOL!! As for the Yamaha, I have a couple videos on the 4C and the 5C. Uhmm yeh it's not the reed or the mouthpiece. I'm noticing that your embouchure is super tight for this mouthpiece and you are actually biting off the sound. I use a lip-out technique. You talk about this in your "how to sound good on sax" embouchure section around 5:17. LOL!! Relaxing the embouchure is one of the most challenging things because it's really counter intuitive. Think more of playing double pianissimo with the Yamaha for the upper harmonics with a lip-out embouchure.

I found getting a mouthpiece reed combo that was slightly challenging helped on my tenors tone and accuracy but the yanigisawa beginners tenor mouthpiece is pretty easy to play. Any jumbo Java mouthpiece will let you get above 3rd b but between the second f# to the b is unstable, but on my alto I hit everything easily with a vintage selmer s80 refaced by Larry Teal. I’d say the Jody jazz are the most consistent mouthpiece I’ve used top to bottom besides occasionally finding a selmer mouthpiece that hits. I’m sure there is others but those worked for me

I’d love to see a video where the saxes from the instrument family play the same lines in terms of concert pitch so we can hear the difference in timbre between them. For example comparing the lowest notes of the tenor to the higher notes of the lower register on baritone, etc.

can someone tell me what thes are and what theyre used for? my school is small enough that my director (theres one for the entire district) isnt well versed in woodwinds, just enough to teach them how to play. he plays trumbone.

If you’re talking about Altissimo, it’s the notes above hi F on the saxophone.

@@GetYourSaxTogether it's really that simple? I was thinking that, but I wasn't really that sure. I want to learn how to use it in practice, especially jazz. Thank you.

Great lesson as always! Thank you for your pro tip on this tricky part of the saxophone register. When I practice this I tend to work more around the chords and play them through out the register of the horn. I just think it is easier to see if I’m at the right pitch. ex I play a G# maj7 chord up to that G altissimo and so on. In that way I think it is easier to practice to get it in your playing from the beginning. That’s just the way I practice this altissimo stuff😊

My biggest frustration is intonation. Even on palm keys, with what "feels" like my correct embouchure, I am almost a semi-tone flat. It just makes anything altissimo just that much more problematic. Some people can drive a stick shift, some people can't. That's just the reality of altissimo.
