Learn Sculpting - Lesson 1 - Clay Modeling 

I have dabbled in sketch and paint art my whole life, and even through in a little bit of charcoal, but on Monday, I turned 21 and I decided I wanted to try something new. I've always been fascinated by sculpting, so I picked up some clay, a tool kit, and get messy. It was harder than I thought and I ended up making a tiny doll sized apple bucket. Thank you for this because I was afraid I would be doing buckets and pails until I gave up. :)

This is a great tutorial I am just getting into clay I love all kinds if crafts and art and have finally realized that no matter what craft you choose it all comes down to making simple shapes and refining them into something else weather that's drawing or sculpting even crochet it's amazing thank u for the video

I am watching this for the first time! It's really amazing! I have a free art class for children, we teaching painting, drawing, & other arts but this is the first time someone has opened my eyes up to this. So, I am really interested to get to share this with the kids!

My homeschooled kids used this video today as their first sculpting experience. They did awesome, your video was easy to follow. My kids are inspired and want to continue this craft!

For the video demos, I'm using Chavant Le Beau Touche HM. If I were doing more advanced or larger projects, I'd be using one of the firmer professional Chavant clays. Le Beau Touche HM is also sulphur free, an advantage if you're doing a silicone or urethane mold.

I loved the video it was something easy to start with.. I used air dry clay (Crayola, it was all I had at the time) and my car was pretty cute but I noticed as I worked with it... It dried out and started cracking... but overall thanks for the instruction!!!

This inspires me to take up sculpting with my kids as simple but very educative activity that will bring them patience, hand dexterity and a capacity to create. I hope they like it.

Air dry clay (like DAS and others) are harder to work this way. We can't attach one piece to another. The best way is to build an armature and work on a single piece. If you try with Fimo or Sculpey You'll see that the connections work very easy. I had the same trouble with air dry clay.

Great video. I just started sculpturing as a small project to do for me to do while I have time and I think my car turned out pretty good for a first try.

I use clay fr the first time and have noexperience! MY problem is, that im trying to bring the head in shape! When i have a nice shape and i try to do some eyes holes or mouth the head is deforming in any direction because of the pressure of my fingers. Do i have to wait till the clay gets harder? Or what is the problem i have? And if i wait a little bit so the clay becomes harder, it starts to look dry and gets wrinckles or....Im so frustrated. Please give me some advises or recomendations. Thank you!

i just started with a book in one hand. ty for these lessons.

I have some air dry clay and have just been trying out the sculpture in the video. However the clay is a little dried out and won't stick together. I tried wetting my hands, which made it a little more malleable but the wheels wouldn't stick to the body of the car. I have another block unopened but there's half a block of the slightly dried out stuff and I don't want it to go to waste. Is there anything I can do with it?

Any suggestions if I was to make a model of a figure made out of goo. It's called zac from league of legends. Are you using polymer clay? I guess so because you mentioned heat from hands. If so is FIMO a good choice?

Hi I am an artist and did my first sculpture today and it came out 100% perfect. While i was watching some videos like this to learn I realised there is a need for a invention to help sculptors. I am therefore looking for a pro who is interested in having a new device developed and marketed in their name this. I have over 200 invention ideas and am working on a dozen big projects so I do not have time to chase anything like this myself. It may benefit sculptors if the device is not already in the market. If you are interested then let me know.

What clay should i use to sculpt figurines? or statues. Like 20 inches in height. Should stay away from air dry clays for sculpting? I hear they are fragile and not very strong and not heavy enough nor do they retain detail? What do u recommend? thanks
