This is such a big help! I’m not deaf, but I’ve always wanted to learn BSL because it’s beautiful and incase I met anyone who used BSL. I know one deaf girl who can sign so I’ll try and show her what I’ve learned. Thank you!! 😂❤
Yesterday, I had a patient who came in for dental checkup. She was having a bit problem with her hearing but I thiught it was because of the situation aroud being noisy. At the end of the check out she did a sign saying thank you and that woke me up. At one point I was disappointed at myself how I couldn't notice sonner. I have been meaning to learn sign language for a long long time so I could communicate and make life easy for my patients. But I have been putting off for a long time. And it woke me up yesterday. If you want to learn bsl the best way is to go to deaf events such as deaf cafe, or deaf pub, if you live in England there is allot of them local to every county. Learning from the deaf themselves is the best way. Also doing the qualifications with a deaf teacher. If you want to learn just the basics but don’t want to be an interpreter I would suggest level 1,2 then stop there. I am training to be an interpreter so I have done level 3-6 which is more in depth about the deaf community, deaf culture, linguistics etc. if you want to go to learn it, make sure it is a signiture approved course, signature is the offical BSL exam board and it will make sure that you are learning exactly BSL. Too many people fake knowing bsl for cheaper prices on social media but are not deaf and do not know real BSL and are just making money. Signiture have a website themselves you can see if courses are available in your area.

Thanks. I have selective mutism, and unmasking my autism seems to be making it affect me more. It's still worth it to improve my mental health and find healthier ways of dealing with the way my brain works so I can be my authentic self, but for now, things are getting harder before they get easier. I've been going non-verbal a lot lately and I think sign language is something everyone should know anyway. I'm hoping that as my life improves and I can be myself more, I won't lose my voice as often, but for now, sign language could really help me, and learning it helps make the world a more accessible place anyway.

I can relate to this as a person who has known BSL for 5 years I come across deaf who spell their name so quick I legit have to ask them to slow down! 😂

I’m sorry to inform you but our language BSL means “ British sign language” meaning it is only used in England. ASL ( American Sign Language) is not the same. Both have a massive difference when it comes to languages. So if your lecturer does ASL he will not understand you if you used BSL . Even down to how you say your name with your hands is a massive difference . ASL is one handed, BSL is 2 hands.

I’m trying to learn because my friend is deaf and I don’t understand her sign language so we write on paper but I want to learn than surprise her ik it’s going to be sooo hard but I’ll do it for her this really helps
Yes 😊 there is a big difference between both of our languages I use BSL. There is sometimes confusion that sign language is the same in every place but This is not true. We do not understand ASL so when deaf Americans come over here they have their own interpreter who can do both to communicate with both people
There are regional variations, and I think that some people with learning differences use Makaton instead of or alongside BSL, so that could possibly be why.
As an interpreter of BSL I will explain. No he is not showing you a wrong sign he is showing you the correct sign. If you have been learning “ how are you” differently to what he has shown then you are not learning BSL, because that is our sign for “ how are you” if yours is different then you may be learning ASL or a different type of sign language. As not every sign language is the same. As for the “ yes, no” they are correct signs for BSL, some BSL users choose to use a head nod for yes, and just a hand movement for no like swipe the hand and then move the head indicating you said no. Those that use this sign are bsl users who have grown up with hearing parents, those who haven’t and have been brought up in a deaf family will say “ no” just a hand swipe. So none of his signs a wrong just a preference of which one they prefer.
We do have makaton but makaton doesn’t say “ how are you” since it is a simplified signs and pictures for those with Down syndrome etc they would sign “good” how are you is too much words for makaton. Because the point of it is one sign to mean what you want. You are not able to use makaton and BSL along side eachother Because BSL is it’s own language has its own grammar like English does. Makaton is not offical signs it’s a communication tool and is not considered a language. So deaf people do not use makaton who use BSL.
@rainbow_T yes 100% they are very very different, you're preaching to the choir. Sorry if my comment came off ignorant, I think I worded my tangent thoughts confusingly. I wasn't writing specific to this video or the question, more a pondering of sign language in general #ADHD
