Thanks for this... my MIDI keyboard wasn't appearing to work in Studio One, but after watching your tutorial I figured out what I was missing... I needed to drag an instrument from the RHS of the screen, to the track in my song I wanted to use it on. Then it worked like it was supposed to. Thanks again :)

OMG, Finally I get it! You've shown me the missing piece. I too have Studio One and just got a new MPK249. What boggled me was "Where and How" to assign and choose which, of all the knobs, sliders and buttons get mapped to which parameters of every Instrument and Plugin I have. Because of your tutorial, I now see that the control knobs essentially become a "blank slate" for each Instrument or Plugin! :-). Now I can finally get some controls working and not use the mouse 100% of the time. (P.S. The control map that comes with Studio One containing every knob, button and slider, isn't very intuitive... the only thing that easily works is the transport controls - yet not the "Loop" button.)

If you delete that track and open a new instrument track with the same vst, will the mapping settings to the keyboard still be saved and ready to use again?
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 8 лет назад
Yes. Not only that, the mappings will remain with the VST instrument even if you open it in a completely new Song/different day. They are permanent, until you choose to manually unlink them. The faders however, don't appear to remain linked in new sessions.

Hi Dude, another very thorough, very useful video. I have a question: is it possible to assign knob 1 on your controller to say volume in the mixer, and knob 2 to say the cutoff on your synthesiser, and then read both knobs at once thereby affecting both parameters at once? It seems that you can't, but maybe you know a way to do this? What I want is to be able to control (i) the virtual footpedal in my wah vst (which has a midi learn function) and (ii) volume for the same track in S1 - *simultaneously*. This would create a wha/volume effect under my fingers that could be operated in real time.

Im trying to connect my korg nanokey 2 which i have in the device model but when i go to edit there are no midi channel options , only receive from and send which are set to nanokey 2 . Prior to me finding your video here , it was telling to hold down set marker and Rew at the same time while plugging in usb cable , and when i checked the online maunual it said to hold down channel 1 and 2 while plugging in usb cable. How are you even supposed to hold down 2 buttons using a mouse ? Now every time i restart studio one trying to redo the connect midi keyboard it is stuck on seeing my korg nanokey 2 as the keyboard but not actually connecting and it is not resetting itself in the midi setup to nothing/remove keyboard so i van start over trying to connect a midi keyboard. Its confusing. I remove the nanokey 2 and set it up again but still nothing shows up in track All inputs, so i then press configure and im taking back to midi setup menu and it shows my device as korg nanokey 2 so i then click on nanokey2 and press reconnect again and a prompt comes up again saying "please plug in your removable midi device now and dismiss this message when finished" so i do that then press ok and still nothing in track All inputs menu . update - OK it finally work after i set it up as generic device and renamed it , A bit of a hassle though , but at least its working now.

Hi mate, I've just bought a new keyboard, an Alesis VI 49 and unfortunately it isn't listed in the device list in Studio One which is a pain because of all the knobs & buttons on it 😵 I've just watched this and I'm confident that I can map most of them with midi learn. However, there are some buttons that I don't know how to map at all. The buttons have commands such as - Down, Up, Tempo, Roll, and others that have the symbols for stop, play, rewind, record, and loop. How can I map those? Plus there are some buttons related to tempo, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/8T, how can I get those to work? Have you any idea how I can get them all to work please?

So, beyond faders and knobs... To use buttons and pads and transports on keyboards, do we need to the keyboard a 2nd time as an external Controller? Any guidance on this? Particularly for a Novation SL Mkii.
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 5 лет назад
Yes, you need to add the keyboard in, as second time but as a controller. Then open up the mapping editor being sure that the controller is active. Click learn and then start pressing the buttons (stop, play, etc.) to add them. You'll then need to right click on the buttons you've added and set them to function as a button. Lastly, you need to right-click again and assign the appropriate commands to each. I'm writing this off the top of my head, so, I think these are all of the correct actions...I'll be doing an updated video on setting up MIDI controllers in S14 very soon.

Hi Quanta - New subscriber. I'm a total newbie and really appreciate your detailed approach to S-1. I have a question regarding midi keyboards. Is there a keyboard out there that does most of the dsp within the unit itself, sparing the computer? If so, which does the best job of this? I've been considering Komplete Kontrol 13 (now supported by S-1) but I sure don't want to overtax my cpu. Thx
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 4 года назад
Hey, thanks for the sub. Actually, it is your audio interface that will help alleviate some of the processing from your computer. The MIDI keyboard you choose will play no part in this. There's a ton of audio interfaces to choose from so I can't really recommend on in particular as it would vary depending on your needs.

Hi mate I have a question if you could please help. A few months ago I bought a 2nd hand Akai MPK 25 midi keyboard, it came with no disc with any drivers, it just came with a cable that connects to my computers USB. The keyboard isn't listed in the Studio One drop down menu at all, unfortunately. I'm following what you said about adding a generic keyboard. Should I be buying midi cables and connecting it to my Presonus Audiobox rather than using the USB on my PC? And if I'm using the USB, should I be choosing my PC in the audio setup rather than my Audiobox? I've been struggling for hours trying to use my keyboard, and I don't think Akai make the MPK 25 nowadays so I don't think I can get the drivers anymore, it's a bit frustrating, so I hope you can help. Many thanks.
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 6 лет назад
Jammy, definitely keep the Audiobox as your audio device. Just be sure that this is working properly, first. You can check out my tut on setting up your audio device in S1, here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QD_bV4lLPZM.html It SHOULDN'T make a difference if you are using the USB connection on your MPK, but, if you just can't find a solution, then, as a last resort you could try using the older MIDI connections routed through your audio interface. Then, just follow the instructions in this video and there shouldn't be an issue. Connect the MPK25 to your PC first, then start S1. You should receive and audible and/or visual notification that Windows has recognized the device...wait for this before starting S1. If you don't get this, then there is a Windows problem and this needs to be resolved first. Try different USB ports on your PC, too! Here is a link to Akai's site with their downloads/manuals/info: www.akaipro.com/products/keyboard-controllers/mpk-25
@JammyGit
@JammyGit 6 лет назад
Thanks a lot mate. I did contact Akai support via their interactive chat and spoke to someone directly about drivers and they said that there are none available for my keyboard as it's class compliant and the driver comes from my computer, but as my MPK25 does work, I don't think there are any problems with drivers. I think it'll be ok once I've got the MPK25 set up properly and I don't have to mess about with it again.....When I watch your tutorials it all makes sense, but when I go onto Studio One I lose it and forget the info and end up drawing a blank hahaha 😆 So I think it'd be better if I watch your youtube videos side by side when I'm actually on Studio One, watch, pause, and press whichever buttons I need, step by step. Thanks again, I appreciate you taking the time to answer, on every video of yours that I watch there are countless questions with problems like mine, so it must take up loads of your time answering them so I'll try not to add to that, and hopefully once I learn enough I won't need to ask. Cheers 👍

I'm brand new to S1 Pro 3. Having difficulty with S1 recognizing my Yamaha MO8 synth via MIDI cables. Tutorial says hook up via USB but other, perhaps older Presonus site info glosses over that potential and just describes hookup via midi cables. Installed Yamaha's USB MIDI driver 1.9.10 (latest). Yamaha MO8 was listed so no generic inst necessary but in receive from and input from selections only listed my audiobox 22vsl as options for both, not the MO8 (actual inst as in this tutorial. USB goes directly to Mac not Audiobox which is USB powered, just out to Mac THIS is my problem I've created. So I went back in to see if I could get USB working. Set MO8 output to USB from MIDI. Connected USB to Mac. Removed the MO8 in External Devices and tried to add new instrument. In drop down list on left now Yamaha folder only displays 2 controllers, no keyboards....Help?

@quantaaudio 7 лет назад
John, from what I've read it seems that the the M08 came out 10 years ago and was initially designed to integrate with Cubase. This may be why you are having some issues with the USB connection. To be honest, your problem is a bit beyond the scope of what I can provide support for on this channel. However, a couple suggestions would be to just connect MIDI cables from the M08 to your audio interface -- leaving the USB disconnected -- then add it as a generic keyboard (as I did in the video) and in the External Instruments window, it would be fine to choose your audio interface in the "receive from/send to" sections. Also, during my brief search on your issue, I discovered this guy who seems to have gotten his to work with Studio One, though I cannot vouch for this! Link below to his instructions on how he did it: bit.ly/2jcs7KA

I finally got mine to work but since the MO8 is older and not supported via updated USB drivers, I had to connect using old school MIDI cables (in & out) to my audio/midi interface. I'm a Mac user on OS X 10.11.6. If you are using a single USB cable (mio?) and have an older model Yamaha, do you also have an audio/midi interface device? Couple of things: (1) if your Yamaha is still supported, download the latest driver (google it for Yamaha's support website, perhaps it's just a driver issue. (2) Failing at that and if you don't have an interface, they aren't that expensive, $100 or less if you just want to use it for MIDI I/0. Check Sweetwater.com (call and ask for help if needed, you'll get the right thing that way for sure.) If you have to use MIDI cables like I did since USB drivers were abandoned of few OS updates ago. Also, check to see if you have created a New Instrument. Go to StudioOne Preferences and choolse "External Devices", select "Add". In next Add Device window, you can check to see if your model is listed under the Yamaha folder but if not, select the top option in the left hand side of the window and choose "New Keyboard". Simply enter the Manufacturer and Device Name and click OK. It should be available via standard MIDI cables. This MAY also work with your USB mio but I don't think so. Go back to Preferences and check Audio Setup to see if it recognizes your mio USB cable. If not, most likely an audio'/MIDI interface is going to be required. Check with Sweetwater but if you haven't added your keyboard as a "New Keyboard" that may be your only problem. I understand that the mio cable was a less expensive entry trial to get your keyboard working but it may be that your minimum expense necessary to get your rig up and running is the audio/midi interface. Presonus has a bare bones Audiobox entry model pretty cheap that would give you good results. These are the only things I can advise you to try. Hope this helps.

Hello. You showed how to configure external MIDI devices. How to configure plugins and instruments in terms of MIDI? How to limit MIDI ports and channels? To press the keyboard key was assigned only one instrument in Studio One. I can not assign it. Everything plays on everything. I have a MIDI1 and MIDI2 keyboard with pads. I want MIDI1 (channel1) to play only on MaiTai (channel1?) And MIDI2 (channel2) to play on VST VocalizerPro (channel 2?) And MIDI2 pads (channel 10) to play on Impact (channel 10?). Is it set to set? Just more keyboards on different instruments and plugs in Studio One and would not duplicate. :) I'm writing by translator. ;)

Quick question can you map more than three plugins with the same knobs
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 3 года назад
You should be able to. The mappings are "focus dependent". So as you create the mapping for particular instruments, these should only apply to the current instrument in focus, and you can then create new/discrete mappings when you select a different instrument.

hi, I cannot use multiple controlers at the same time. I have three of them, M-audio Oxigen, Trigger Finger Pro, Korg PA600. Just one of them can be default and working. Maybe i'm doing something wrong...?
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 7 лет назад
Well, you're part right, here... You can only set one device as the default controller. If you find yourself using one controller, more than the others, this could be useful to do. In this way, whenever you create an instrument track, or load a VST instrument, it will be set automatically as the input. BUT, in your Instrument Track(s), you need to be sure that you set the input drop-down menu (the middle drop down menu below the record, mute, solo, icons) to "All Inputs". This way, the track will receive MIDI data from all connected controllers. Hope this helps!

your vids are very informative, thanks, very much, for taking time to do these to help people, must take a while to do these videos, much appreciated, since you have a great in depth knowledge of studio 3, can I ask a question or two?I have a korg krome 88 key, it has an on board sequencer, is it possible to mimic all 16 channels within studio 3 so that I have control over all the sequencer channels show up as the mixing channels, I would imagine that as I play all the channels they would record into the 16 different tracks. horizontally as an audio file.( basically I don't like the small touch Screen, an prefer to take control on the MAC PC using studio 3.is it also possible to convert an audio track into midi data to edit?many thanks in advance.Russell

Maybe you've already found the solution to your problem at this point, but I think if you are particularly having an issue with strings, that's just because stringed instruments don't typically cover the whole keyboard range. I would load up a piano preset and see if you have full coverage, there.

Hey man! I tried again following this video instead. I have the MPK mini as well but did as if it wasn't in the default list. When I hit the midi learn button and move the knobs, they won't get recognized at all. Guess they are damaged which is weird 'cause I've never really used them (didn't know how to). Must have been a manufacturing issue perhaps? Anyways, nice video, Keep it up!

Great video! I just got a MidiPlus AKM320 midi keyboard and set it up in Studio One. S1 sees the midi keyboard (I can see the monitors moving when I hit keys) and it will record (I can see the notes in the track), but I can't hear it or play the midi track back. I added another track with an existing midi file and it won't play, either. How do I get Studio One to let me hear midi?
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 7 лет назад
With the assumption you are new to S1, recording MIDI,using a DAW, etc., just know that MIDI alone does not produce audio. So you need to insert a VST instrument onto your track in order to hear the MIDI. In your browser, to the right in S1, navigate to the instruments tab and just drag one over and on top of your track...you should then be able to here audio. Just change the presets for different sounds. Just be sure that you have install the soundsets that came with your version of S1, first!

Thanks for responding, Quanta. A friend of mine who has experience showed me that if I drag/drop the instrument of choice into a track it works. @quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 5 лет назад
Within one of your songs, I would click on the word "MIDI" in the transport bar to see your MIDI information. Then press and release a key on your MIDI keyboard and take note of what the data says. It should be two lines of info, one for "note on" and the other for "note off". If there's more there, than you need to look into your controller settings. If you only have those two note on/off lines, there's something buggy with S1 or the VST instrument you're using and it'd be hard for me to identify without seeing your setup.

Hey am using studio, and I have bought an Akai mpk to start making electronics beats. Every time I connect my midi controller o my computer I can see Studio one receiving the signal however wen I press the keys n my mdi keybord I cant hear any notes sound from my midi keyboard. what can be the problem?Do I need to connect headphones to my laptops or studio monitor?
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 7 лет назад
There could be any number of problems in this situation you're describing. First, are you sure you have a patch/preset chosen for the VST instrument you're using? Bring in an audio file or loop and see if you have audio from that first, just so you can know that you have Studio One set up properly as far as it's audio routing is concerned. Try several different VSTs. Take note of the audio meter for the main audio output channel...if that's active and you still have no sound, then you know that there is an audio device/routing problem. Load Mai Tai, or Presence, and take note of the pads/virtual keyboard. Are they lighting up when you press keys pads on your keyboard? Lastly, check out these vids I've done on troubleshooting MIDI/Audio in S1 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ifXq6-sebqI.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xIqHKwc8G_M.html

That'd be hard to say without knowing what your needs are for the type of music you're doing, etc. For instance whether you need drum pads, would you like to work with physical faders and knobs to control your DAW/VSTs, do you need 61 keys, or more... I've always been happy with the Nektar Impact series. You get a lot of bang for the buck and most DAWs are already pre-mapped if you install the drivers. I've been very interested in the Akai MPK(49, 61) series also. They feel like a very solid build, but I've yet to try and use one with a DAW. Anyhow, thanks for supporting the channel, Alan. Will answer your other questions as I have time. Best!

What kinda midi keyboard would you recommend buying? 🤔
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 5 лет назад
That'd be difficult to answer without knowing more info on what type of music you'd like to do and how involved you'd like to get in your playing. Most of the MIDI controllers out these days are pretty decent. The biggest things you need to consider is: your budget, how many keys do you need, do you want drum pads for making beats, and do you want note repeat included on the keyboard. Oh, and also whether you want synth-action keys, or, semi-weighted, etc.
@J.J.Barrientes

@quantaaudio

I'm not familiar with that keyboard, but I see that it does have a USB port so I'm assuming that's how you have it connected to your computer and you've stated that Studio One recognizes it...so, it must have MIDI capabilities. Just understand that MIDI is not sound - only control data - so you need to have it "connected" to a VST instrument to produce and record sound in Studio One. You also need to be sure that you arm the track it's set up on, for recording. Seems like perhaps you are new to working with DAWs? I'd recommend checking out these tutorials to help you get further acquainted with recording with a MIDI keyboard in S1... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xIqHKwc8G_M.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6kYjR09sP9w.html

Hey this worked great to recognize my maudio axiom 49 I also have a Scarlett interface 2i2r though I'm not hearing any sound from the piano but I can see it working on studio 1 any advice?
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 7 лет назад
You've got the Axiom assigned to a VST instrument? Are your audio level meters active along with the MIDI activity meter you're seeing? Try bringing in an audio loop or audio file and playing back, to see if you can hear anything this way...if you can, then you will know that somehow, the MIDI data from your Axiom is not making it to the VST instrument. Also,I've got a video on troubleshooting this sort of issue that you can check out, here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ifXq6-sebqI.html Let me know if you're still having problems.

Quanta thanks so much for replying, I did test out another audio track to make sure I was getting sound out of the track but the midi still won't sound basically in the video I get to 5:18 I can see the keys light up on the screen but no sound any advice? Checked out your other vid didn't help but thanks for the suggestion after leaving this comment the keyboard magically came on but it's super low volume and in like the other vid only some of the keys are working
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 7 лет назад
Hmm, there could be any number of issues that may be causing your problems. Hard to troubleshoot without seeing your setup. What happens if you click the virtual keyboard keys on your VST Instrument with your mouse? Do you have sound at full volume for all keys? If not, then it would seem that you've got an audio setup problem. But, if you've brought in a loop/audio file and they play back fine, then, I'm a bit stumped. Create an instrument track, create a MIDI event on that track by using the paint tool, then draw in some notes and play back the VST instrument in this way. See what happens with that. If this plays back normally, at normal volume, all keys, etc. then my only other suggestion would be to perform a factory reset on you Axiom by holding down the "+" and "-" buttons while you power it on. This will restore it back to it's factory settings, keep in mind!!! Also, try multiple VST instruments, Presence, Mojito, Mai Tai, Impact, 3rd party...Try different presets...(before you perform a factory reset!)
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 7 лет назад
Also, I'm not sure if you're trying to add the keyboard as I did in the video, but if you are, try using the preset that's already in the external device setup page within the M-Audio folder. There is one in there for the Axiom 49! If you've been using that, then try to set it up generically as I did in the vid...

How can i assign permanent cc controls without having the need to reassign for every track n new session....for example i want to have mod wheel assigned to cc1 permanently
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 6 лет назад
When you perform the settings that I show in this video, they are retained by Studio One and remain for all new sessions. If, as in your example, you'd like the mod wheel to send out CC1 permanently, this is something you would need to set within your MIDI controller. How that can be done varies depending on what brand/model you are using. I would refer to your MIDI controller manual for that.

It's not absolutely necessary if you're going to 'program' beats/instruments. But if you plan on recording live with a MIDI controller or live vocals/instruments while using effects within the DAW (which I highly recommend), it is necessary. At least for a PC, not sure what the latency is like on a Mac.
