In this series I will be helping Anna, my daughter in law, to understand all the wonderful ways of making a QUILT.
From choosing fabric and blocks, understanding the design and learning the skills required for cutting and construction, I hope she makes a quilt she will be proud of.
Anna has collected images she likes on a Pinterest Board and in the first part of this little series we look at those and I find out what she would like to learn.
Maybe you, or someone you know would like to join us? Share this video with those new to quilting and join us on this journey.
This will be series we will share throughout the year, so be sure to hit the notification bell so you won’t miss an episode.
We will record progress on Instagram and Pinterest here:

Ah my Sunday soothe time. Time to grab a cuppa, some hand sewing & chill for a little while. I find it so relaxing listening to you & watching your progress, whilst progressing with my own cross stitch, patchwork, quilting or dressmaking (as the mood dictates). I'm fancying having a go at some padded embroidery too, always good to mix things up. Keep up the great work👏👏👏

Ok. Kate has now sealed her place in my heart as a virtual big sister. “It takes as much effort to do it beautifully as it does to do it badly” was my late mother’s mantra. She lived by those words every day. If you’re still reading these, Kate-thank you! You made my day!

I grew up living behind the feed mill in my town nearly 80 years ago. My mom and I would walk through the back yard to the little store attached to the mill and I would pick out a sack I liked for my mom to make a dress for me. I wish I had one of those dresses, now. I will enjoy going along with Anna on this journey while she learns from Kate. Thank you.

My Grandpa raised chickens and my mom raised rabbits. I loved going to the feed store and picking out fabric for some of my clothes and for my Mom's aprons. All those colors, smells and the Spring chicks bring back those sweet memories. Take care everyone.

@@judithburke1539 I think of Kate as a good friend far away. She and her “chats” have been a godsend during these 2+ years of stress and trauma. When I need grounding, I binge watch and it calms my brain so I can focus on what’s in my hands. I’m knitting a mitered square throw that Kate inspired. Take care and stay safe.

Sitting here on a cold day in the states and loving this episode. 30 years ago I made a wall hanging all by hand. My love of fabric and colors has kept me interested in quilting, however, I've never made another one since. Two years ago I retired and purchased my very first sewing machine but haven't taken it out of the box yet! Oh my. Kate and Anna, I'm here 'in class' with you. Thank you :)

Yes get the machine out of the box and do something small. Make 12in squares and you can try anything on it. I still have a quilt I made 25 years ago, it isn't finished because I'm too nervous to quilt it. But I keep practising on 12in squares. One day I will finish it. Take care, get the instruction book out and see how exciting you remember sewing is.

Although I ve madeany quilts over the last 10years, mostly for charity, and I have about 10 tops that need quilting I haven't done any sewing for the last 18mths due to health issues that took my mojo. Just last week I picked up my rotary cutter and finished cutting out the fabric for my grandson's 18th birthday quilt his birthday is in April so will begin sewing on Wed when our group gets back from the holiday break. Watching you girls thismorning, while eating peaches with a little cream for breakfast, I'm feeling rejuvenated to get sewing. Next 2 days must get my home in order so I can sew guilt free.🤣💞🐈‍⬛🐈

Hi there you two lovely people. I love all your videos and have followed you fore ages Kate! I have my alotted space on the lime green sofa. I now live in Sweden since Brexit happened, but I used to work in a quilt shop just outside London called CREATIVE QUILTING. I knew nothing about quilting when I started there, and had to learn from scratch. I worked there for 15 years. Here in Sweden quilting is far and few between. I have a shop close by, selling all I need but offer no classes. Anna it's going to be fabulous to follow your journey. You are so lovely and you will get so hooked. You will never look at a fabric the same way again. Every tiled floor and knitted garment will speak to you. I watch a lot of videos, and love Donna Jordan from Jordan fabrics. I have made many of her quilts. Her teaching is fabulous. Also the ladies from Missouri Star Quilt company. I have 'wasted' many hours watching them. Good luck. I will be watching.

And taking everyone who will watch upcoming videos step by step through what I am sure will be a wonderful experience even for more experienced quilters like me. My mother and I made beautiful ruffled curtains for the long windows in her home. I enjoyed working on those with her. Kate and Anna I think it's wonderful you want to work together on this project. Glad to see you feeling so much better. Exciting that Anna is so interested in quilting and colour. I am just putting a flying geese quilt sandwich together and will then move on to a pinwheel quilt top that I made from the "stitch and flip" cutoffs from all my flying geese blocks. I made the pieces into half square triangles, then into pinwheels and finally into disappearing nine patch blocks. I ended up with the pinwheels that had borders and cornerstones all in one block. A great way to use up leftovers...two quilts from one!

Hi Kate,it was wonderful to meet you and Anna at the FOQ'S on Friday, I introduced myself and said I watch lots of your videos, hope you enjoyed the show, I really did. You suggested I looked at Agnes's quilt, I eventually found it, it was beautiful! So lovely to have bumped into you, Jacqui Palmer

Anna, I love that you're wanting to make a quilt. But, I still want to scream RUN, half in jest. :) You have a wonderful and amazing person to teach you. I can't wait to see the next episode and your finished quilt! :)

Okay, I have an idea. We used to go to rummage sales at a church and that’s how we got our fabric. Plus England was big on quilting. I started at 7 years old and my first one was finished at 8 yrs old and is still on my bed. I am now going to be 57 this year. They have EPP which is what I did. Manx quilting is from the Isle of Man.

Good for you Anna! I started quilting at about your age. I am 73 now. Before I got this cancer and before covid hit, I had barely started an English paper piecing project. Now that I can sit in my comfy chair but not strong enough to sit at the sewing machine I am working on the epp. Right now I am doing pin cushions and mug mats which I will give to my friends when we meet in March. I also want to hand stitch some needle books for them too. Maybe by summer I can sit at the machine again. I have some quilts I want to finish. So you are starting on what can be a life long adaptable path of fun.

It is because of you Kate, and your episode on EPP that I am doing a hand-sewn hexagonal, K Fassett prints, EPP quilt. I have never done anything like it before and it is a perfect pandemic project due to the meditative quality of the hand sewing. And I want to thank you for inspiring me! And yes you can't swing a cat here in Minnesota without hitting someone who quilts, has quilted or owns quilts. Oooh this will be fun to see Anna's quilt as it evolves. Hugs from the lime green couch in Minnesota. Fern

Oh, Anna, you touch my heart! “Why don’t they still do that?”, such a question! They don’t mostly due to cost, and no one wants a feedsack. I have many friends who had feedsack dresses, and they hated them. Now, feedsack fabric is hard to find, but many times they are replicated like the originals.
