Thanks for covering this, Jeremy. I have often heard the chordal figure in Count Basie recordings, especially at the end of tunes...I particularly love his time with Lester Young, and I marvel at Basie's use of space in general. He and Monk seem to both be of the belief that space is beautiful!
Yep - love that! Weirdly, Oscar Peterson and Count Basie seem to have a really strong relationship despite one playing very few notes and one playing a lot of notes. Oscar's trio arrangements often seem to be emulating Basie's big band arrangements.
I like the way you are clear about every technique and tool you are using. It's much less confusing that way. This will be a nice addition to the comping I do.
great video! Last week I decided to focus more on my left hand and started out in your “playing solo jazz piano book” with chapter 5 (traditional swing techniques) and this is working out great. My playing feels so more solid/ grounded. Highly recomended😎
Great lesson Jeremy! Content, audio and video, everything is very good 👍, what I would add now is a reference to all the standards you use as an example in your lessons, in the title and/or in the description so that if I am looking for a tutorial on Take the A train for example I know where to click among the many RU-vid suggestions
Can you help me? I recently had a stroke. left hand out of commission for now, In like to practice right simple Basie riffs..any vids. I can look at to practice slow.. get the brain back on board? thx
Hmmm, well, with the left hand out, it seems like a great opportunity to practice some bebop heads in the right hand. I'd check out some Charlie Parker/Bud Powell tunes and shed those with teh right hand.
