It has either been punctured, or failed from within due to a combination of metal fatigue, sometimes rust and possible over pressure. Only takes a single tiny little wire to break to be enough for a hose to fail under pressure.
For spiral, wire gaps and high wire(basically wrong stacking) and wrong tension are the highest failure modes. For braided hose, wire loops, cross wires, broken wire and again wrong tension are highest failures. Good braiding or spiraling always depend on good wire winding.
