Based on the previous video, I tried this out tonight instead of my usual d4 c4 opening, and my opponent went with d5 (good!), Nf6 (great!!)... g6 (argh - not in video 1!!). Happily, I played 4.e3 and 6.h4 and had a nice dynamic game in spite of mistakes (and a crazy "put-my-queen-on-the-wrong-square" blunder) and went on to win. It gives the #PubChessBluffer a bit of extra ammo without too much book learning. Thanks!

GM Williams is by far the best chess teacher to date his videos are best because he not only give you ideas and concepts which are easy to remember the content works. You don't have to spend countless hours to learn to play winning openings to me he is the modern day Roman. I am the average lazy chessplayer and love his teaching techniques little studying with great results.

Thank you, Simon. I really appreciate your explanations of openings because, even in your books, you explain the main ideas as well as variations. A lot of opening book authors don't do this. It's essential to understand the general ideas of an opening so that we have a guiding star for our plans in case our opponents depart from theory.

thanks for these Simon. As a club level player I really like the simple and solid character of the London system, but problem is that so does everyone else. Everyone knows all the plans so they don't work any more. A new take on it is just what it needs.

I repeatedly asked myself what the heck was a perk opening? Then I realized that you meant PIRC. You have to pronounce it as PEE-R-TZ. That is how this Slovenian player, Vasja Pirc was called. :-) Cheers.

A big fan. The fact that you put content out to give a sample speaks to your confidence in the quality of the product. I wasn't so sure about the chancer, but now I see how he adds to the discussion and improves the lessons. Questions, questions...more important than answers in many instances. I bought the DVD, and wow! Simon is a excellent teacher. Getting the ideas and plan, instead of just try to memorize the moves make it so much easier to remember. Also how he repeats stuff, and slowly build up the level makes you able to go along, without pause and replay all the time. Good humor and relaxed methods makes this DVD a fun way to improve your chess skill. Keep up the good work Simon.

I bought the DVD! Well, the digital download actually but its quite well done. Theres lots of videos and pgn files and I think Simon does a good job of explaining the ideas of the opening and arising middle games.

Me too (also bought his London DVD). I think this is best for 1. d4 Nf6. Against 1. d4 d5 in practice I continue the standard London 2. Bf4 because 2. Nc3 c5 is awkward. He of course suggests the gambit line 3. e4. I'm not that comfortable with a gambit at my level so the alternative 2. Bf4 c5 can be met with 3. e3 and avoid the gambit, and/or transition into the Jobava with Nc3 soon after (or continue with the standard London e.g. after the normal 3...e6 which GingerGM says is ideal for that opening with black's bad bishop).

I would say if anyone like myself that loves Simon and purchase his London System, this whole concept on Nf6 and g6 setup will make perfect sense. This is like the 2.0 version added on to his London System with a bit of Jobava twice. Overall I'm ready to play this immediately without any hesitation. I'm just curious when your new chessbase DVD will come out because I already purchase the following: 1) London system 2) Both English 1 and 2 opening 3) The Chigorin

After one watch through i modified my london opening and went from a consistent 1150 to a 1250 overnight. Paired with not rushing and doing longer calculations. Got close to 1300 and dropped again so back to studying and reducing those mistakes!

I played a wonderful OTB game Monday night after having watched the first video briefly. I Got great space, good advantage (+5,1!), promising attack ... and then blundered my Queen due to nerves !!! ;O) Too bad, but the opening was/is great!

I like to play 1.Nc3 (Van Geet/Dunst) to see what Black's intentions are and if Black plays 1.d5, I play 2. e4 to try and induce Black to chase my knight around with 2. d4 and I get a knights tango situation or a reversed Nimzowitch. If black plays 1. e5, I go Nf3 and I get an Alekhine with a tempo up. I like the idea of transitioning to a Jobava here if black starts fianchettoing his king bishop.

I had good tournament success with this at 1700-1900 USCF level the past couple months (won or drew all my white games). Even had one person play ...Nc6 completely missing Nb5 (you kind of trust there's no way to screw up on move 3 if you play solidly, but yes you can...). One thing though, with the thematic early kingside pawn advances, nobody I've encountered has wanted to castle kingside. They castle queenside even after ...c6 or ...c5 just to avoid a pawnstorm. Those advanced pawns definitely help out in the endgame though.

One thing I don't like - is B can damage up W pawn structure with a Nimzo - 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nc3 e6 3. Bf4 Bb4 4.e3 Bxc3+ - which doesn't happen in London of course as there is a pawn on c3 - but maybe having the 2 BIshops is adequate comp for doubled pawns

As a Kings Indian Player, this line is very annoying to face. The idea with Qd2 and allowing double f-pawns gives White interesting attacking chances. Before, white used to play Be2 then black could play Bxf3 followed with e6 and c6. Black plays a triangle slav structure WITHOUT the useless c8 bishop. But now, things have changed. Nice video Simon.

Hi Simon, What do you suggest against 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 e6 ? As far as I can see white has nothing better than transposing into a classical French after 3.e4 d5, since 3.Bf4 is met by 3...Bb4 and black seems to be quite ok.

He doesn't cover that exact move order in the DVD, but if you don't want the French, according to the databases you can continue with 3. Bf4 Bb4 4. e3 which is the main Jobava setup, e.g. after 4...d5 5. Bd3, then Ne2 and O-O, or if 4...Nd5 5. Ne2 Nxf4 6. exf4(!) as played by Jobava himself and discussed by GingerGM that is "perfectly fine" because it sets up the later attacking ideas of g4 and f5.

Ginger,.....Here's some current feedback. I recently found a local chess club, where I was able to play the Jobava against my first human, in real time. He played Bb4 (Nimzo-Indian) and totally screwed me up by capturing the C3 knight and doubling my pawns. I was left flustered with no concrete plan. I was able to battle back for a draw. I have your Chessable course. I found your chapter on Bb4, which was helpful (in hindsight!). Maybe you could build on this variation/line, as it seems a pretty potent one for black. By taking out the C3 knight (early), black appears to be able to take MANY of the Jobava's tactics off the table!

I'm no GingerGM, but did you play 3. e4 (one of his "rules")? If so, when he tries to play Bb4, you just push the e-pawn, threatening his knight on f6. It's not bad for white if black takes your knight, even though it deviates from the main plans he shows. Maybe he covers that on "the DVD".

That's typically KID (to be followed with ...g6 and ...Nf6) so continue with 2. Nc3 and 3. Bf4

I would say if you know anything about the caro-kann from the white perspective after 1. d4 d5 2) Nc3 c6 3) e4.... it goes into a main line. Now as for the semi-slav, that's a good question Simon may have an answer for there

He covers it in the DVD. Bf4, e3, and depending if black gets out the bishop ahead of ...e6, either f3 and g4 to chase the bishop, or Bd3, Nf3, O-O and e4 ideas.

in this line 5.Nge2 followed by a3 is playable, but looking at the database it seems jobava preffers 4.Nb5 over 4.e3 nowadays.

Play Nb5 before they play Bb4 Edit: if d4 e6 Nc3 Bb4 play Qd3.

@@GigasGirus I think a good rule is, if black responds 1. d4 with ...Nf6, play Jobava. If anything else, standard London. In OP's line 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. Bf4 e6 then 4. Nb5 like you say, forcing 4...Na6 "taking out two pieces with one" as gingerGM says is a key theme to the opening. In your line 1. d4 e6 then play standard London with an advantage (his queen bishop is now bad) as gingerGM teaches in his London system DVD's.

well the pirc is technically played with 2...Nf6 and without Nf6 its not called pirc at all I think. thats why they call it modern or tigers modern nowadays. anyway thanks for this preview video simon!

He covers it in the full DVD. You storm his king first because you'll win the race. Bh6 and get his bishop, Knight to f3-e5 or g5, pawn to h4-h5 or g4 sometimes.

I've found in practice, as a regular London player, the immediate 2. Nc3 only works after 1. d4 Nf6. After 1. d4 against anything else, do the standard London 2. Bf4 maybe followed by e3, which gives you flexibility to still go to the Jobava if they don't do ...e6.
