Ah, a bearded old man, in the woods, beside a fire playing a homemade flute. You are gandalf the green (the flute being the replacement for the pipe). Absolutely amazing. Great aesthetic.

Seeing that windbreak stack of logs in the picture made me think 'the long fire' must be a fire that chambers a new log from a log magazine by using gravity every time a log burns up. Here I go overthinking things again

love this stuff, I live in the UK and spent my youth in the woods. wish more kids would do the same these days. I watch these video and the teach it too my kids at the weekends they're only young but are already really starting to love it. computers are ruining our kids childhoods. love the video, keep them coming. kevin brown how many kids gonna see this or learn it without a computer....computers are not ruining our kids childhoods, they just have a different one to ours.. I’m a conservationist, I spend all my time outside.... one fo my kids learnt how to play piano from using a computer and another one learned how to code using a computer and the third one runs an online business with a computer ...it didn’t ruin their childhood....

Totally agree. Obviously computers (and cell phones and tablets, etc.) serve very vital and functional purposes, but they also offer instant access to useless or corrupting entertainment, -bread and circuses of all types, from garbage movies, and music, to porn, to video games, and a lot of things kids shouldn't be exposed to or have access to.

Hey, I made a pvc flute after watching your video on how to make one. I took it with me and my girlfriend on a lake Michigan kayak camping trip. While I'm just a beginner, my girlfriend - who played flute in college - played it like a champ and was thoroughly impressed with how "enchanting" its sound was. Thanks for your video(s)!

I came up with very similar design when I was a boy and I spent all my summers around campfire. We would put shorter logs like this and then just leave it overnight or even longer and then just feed it some more to restart it. It even lasted through heavy rain.

Lonny, you are a scraggly pioneer who continues to provide us with very informative videos about living in the far north. I've been to Alaska in the "summer" from Anchorage through Fairbanks to Ft. Yukon. Alaskans of all ethnicities are incredible survivors in a most inhospitable area. Almost 24 hours of sunlight, followed by almost 24 hours of darkness. Mosquitos the size of dragonflies. I suggest a wonderful book, Two Old Women by Velma Wallis, who lives in Ft. Yukon. Please keep up your videos. We in the Lower 48 appreciate your efforts.

+GizmoBee1702 Thank you. Glad you are enjoying the videos. I think my wife has read that book before. She really enjoys reading true stories of the pioneer lifestyle especially Alaska based. During the winter it really isn't 24 hours of darkness. In our location we get 24 hours without sunshine but it still gets daylight. I spent a winter on the North slope and it gets daylight there during the winter as well. Here where we are located in South Central Alaska, we don't see the sun for 2 full months but that is because of the high mountains around us blocking the sun. Barrow, the Northern most community in Alaska, actually gets sunshine before we do. We do see the sun during the winter when we go down to town though and man is that sure a pleasure.

ive seen quiet a few of these long fire videos and tried one myself. if people think you can do this, light it once and leave it for 8-10 hours without touching it and stay warm all night - lol, not a chance. this ideal fire takes many attempts to get it right. its not impossible but yes lonnie it takes practice. maybe dead hard wood thats 10" or more in diameter. cracking effort my friend

Looking forward to giving this a try next camping out. In Australia we have a mainly hardwood forest, 7 inch (17.5cm) wood needs 2-3inch (5-7.5cm) wood under it to produce enough heat to burn bigger stuff especially if logs aren’t completely dry to start out. Our smaller kindling like you used probably wouldn’t pack enough heat to get the whole thing going well, but we’ll see... and adapt if needed. There’s definitely a balance between too much heat on a fire burning it all too quickly and less heat/fuel to last many hrs. Luv your vids and flute playing.

Hi. I am another who loves your laid back presentation style. You go about things in a scientific manner which I like. When the middle log dropped drop I wondered if heat output to the shelter might have been restored if the nearest log was rolled over hot side out and perhaps its buddies rolled towards it. Have you seen the self-feeding campfire? A sloped stack of logs that just roll in one after the other as the bottom one turns to ash. Great video again thank you.
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 7 лет назад
Yes I have seen several versions of a self feeding fire. By turning the coals of the bottom log toward the shelter yes there would have been more heat produced toward the shelter initially but the fire may have gone out due to a lowering of temperature in the central burn area.
@TerryMcGearyScotland

Great video. Thanks for making it! It looks like the front log blocks a lot of the heat from the coals from reaching the shelter. If you use a smaller log in the front or after it has burned for a while, tip the front log into the coals, so it would burn faster than the back log, would it have allowed more heat to reach the shelter?
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 7 лет назад
Yes if the front log was lower then there may be more radiated heat transfered to the shelter but also it would make the fire less stable and may be instrumental to collapse of the fire

@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 8 лет назад
+DeutschMaga A fire "reflector" does reflect some heat but not really as much as one would hope. It's primary benefit in my opinion besides being a wind break, is to provide a warm area close to the fire that will induce a warm air current in the immediate area (kind of a chimney effect) that will minimize the smoke from the fire being sucked into the shelter by the rising heated air there. You can see my video below for a more thorough video demonstration of this camp addition. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kE2fI3V-c0A.html

I typically have my dog with me which is great for his extra pair of eyes, ears, and nose. I also carry a suitable sized firearm that is appropriate for use for grizzly bear protection. I have also made an electric bear fence for encircling the camp if I feel there is a need. See the video below for how I made the fence. Yes. The windier it is, the hotter this firelay will burn which also means as a consequence the wood is consumed faster.
