Ah yes the classic "right as I'm struggling with some major problem in art, an art youtuber I adore drops a video explaining how to deal with it" pipeline.

One second into the video and I thought Timothy Olyphant was my art instructor. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed. Excellent video, nonetheless.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on A.I -- many artists are worried and, especially newer artists, dejected on the prospect of all their hard work "vanishing" with the rise of cheap machine labor.

For mine AI is just another tool. Knowing what to do with it and how to modify it will, as always, be the rub. I’m sure when photoshop was first used for concepting similar anxieties were felt. I don’t think machines will ever have imagination at the end of the day, there will always be parameters they are bound to, whereas the production of art and illustration is pushed forward by authentic innovation and story telling.

Hi Tim !! I've discovered your channel not so long ago and I really enjoy the way you view the learning experience ! I have some questions for you : 1) Do you consider being a mentor ? 2) Do you advice for studying many subjects 1 or 2 hours a day or studying one subject the whole day until mastered? ( I currently am able to spend all day drawing and Ive spent 10 months on figure drawing / perspective / sketching simple shapes from all angles) I just wonder if I should keep going this way or If i should distribute my time into many different art subjects such as color theory, rendering, understanding light and shadow, drawing hard surface, composition etc. 3) Would you recommend your course to someone who's not necessarily interested in line art style? Is there anything I can still get out of it or is it purely based on that style? I've quitted my art school after 1 year paying 6k and getting little to no knowledge on art, teachers were just basically giving us projects after projects, giving feedback but never teaching any fundamentals ever and I got very frustrated so i decided to learn by myself with online ressources for way less. 4) Any advice on artblock? Sometimes im full of idea and I just don't even start them cause i have practiced any background, composition colors, i dont have a process or anything so I dont even tried and my view is "i'll try after working on the fundamentals". Is it the right mindset or should i still force myself to try and fail miserably? ahah Anyway thank you very much for the content, i'll keep watching your videos and i usually draw at the same time ! 😊

Oh yesss i want to ask about mentorship, too!! The one by one advice i mean.
@banane2279
@banane2279 2 года назад
Well, it is effective to study many subjects at once, switching them up over the day. That way you keep your brain engaged and force it to concentrate, instead of falling into monotonous, automatic repeat. For example you do figure drawing first, then a value/lighting study. Then you do figure drawing again, forcing yourself to remember what you did before the second subject.

Wow! You are either reading my mind or the "curricullum" you are building here is really comming together because I was planning on requesting a video about exactly that. I'm now somewhat confortable with drawing characters - not so much with clothing and costume design - but they are always floating in the void of the blank page. Another suggestion would be to mix the videos with a "dryer" one, like perspective or anatomy, with a more direct one, like "watch me draw", "how to draw different hair styles" or "how to draw rocks, trees, bushes and plants". In the future I'd love to get a video from you about your approach to animal drawing/creature design and another one talking about you other book references. I'd imagine Loomis ins the king for comics, but when you transitioned to Concept Art you probably needed to brush up on some other fundamentals and that brought new reference books for those other fundamentals. Please keep these videos coming! They are being super duper helpful!

PS: Please do go into ground planes. I undertand it in a intelectual level, but find it difficult to make my characters feel like they are all resting in the same ground plane seamlessly.

Have you done, or can you do a video on “Should you put backgrounds for characters?” Because I don’t like backgrounds, but I would wanna know if it really makes a difference.

Thanks a lot for another useful video. Yes, i am always truggled about how to put character into environment. I wonder about your inspiration, did you find inspiration about character first or about the environment first in your fantasy world building??

Backgrounds really are a neglected niche unfortunately. Imo they are just as important as the star characters.

I would like to ask about overlaping composition, how to avoid a tangent during planning composition?
@TheDrawingCodex
@TheDrawingCodex Год назад
Yeah good idea for a video. I think the easiest way I normally handle this is to draw the most important things first and plan secondary items around the primary item. Sorry that's a super simple way of explaining it. I'll make a video to go into more detail. Also there is a lot of subtle re-drawing and tweaking you often need to do to make sure little elements in the drawing are overlapping nicely. It's a constant part of drawing for me!
