Learn to Cast Metal Parts from 3D Prints

Using 3D printed patterns for sand casting aluminum parts is fun, and not that difficult. I set off to make a custom Rosette iron. Rosetttes are Scandinavian deserts I remembered from my childhood. I show all the details of the build and talk about some of the foundry issues with stop motion Legos and Claymation. If you'd like more details about the foundry process and pattern design I'd love to hear about it, and I could make another video.
I started doing some more educational sequences, and this video just started getting too crazy long, so I punted. I'm still learning about how to pace a longer video. I can do the individual sequences, but stitching them together into a longer whole seems difficult.

It’s criminal that this video has only 17k views, it’s so well done. The music, the stop motion, the many different techniques! Love it

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! I put a crazy amount of time into making the videos, so I don't make very many of them, and that makes for fewer subs, fewer eyeballs, etc. So it's no surprise I don't get huge numbers of views. I prefer to think: "Well I've gotten a fair number of subscribers for only having made 4 videos!" :)

It’s the bat thing.. People are avoiding Seemingly satanic stuff and blocking any channels that even remotely hint of Satanism.. This one is on my family block list. I am into 3d printing so I manually checked into this and Enjoyed the Creativity but I certainly wouldn’t allow my Children near it. SATANISTS are creative and Sneaky.. I’m not implying this channel is satanic in nature, only that it’s flagged and it could be due to something as innocuous as “bats” or something in the Monologue (or A creator linked instance, The profiles can go back decades).. Regardless, SATANISTS are now emboldened and need to be stuffed back into the dirt… Beware “creatives”… Even the ones great at pretending to be normal, nice people(They aren’t..Look at D.C. Hollywood and every Leftist stronghold..).

lol. I'm glad you liked it. It is funny how what would normally be a couple of week build turns into months of screwing around when I'm trying to film it all and doing stop motion and throwing in silly jokes. I did 3 different days of shooting for that stupid rabbit shot because I wanted an "impossible" version where I'm talking to the camera, and the camera moves and then there's stop motion stuff. All those different attempts had different problems that made them not work and I ended up just going with the original one even though it wasn't as "impossible" I even was memorizing what some of those lines sounded like backward at one point! OMG. Simon was doing all the camera work for those shoots. lol Also sand and spray paint are both things you don't really want a camera near, so that was interesting. Hi!

I love everything about this video. It is so well balanced...no unnecessary chatting, easy to follow and those stop motion sequences are really the icing on this lovely cake of a video. I think this video and your channel are so underrated that it borders on being illegal. This should be a mandatory watch for a great many makers who want to get into video making as well as a reality check for those who have been having a crack at it for a while. I really cannot heap enough praise on your work. Well done!

Oh my gosh. Thanks for the kind words! I love working on all the details of a project. Digging in super deep. I guess I am also trying to apply that to the video making meta project. Of course the down side is that my actual projects have had to get quite a bit simpler, and I don't produce many videos. I have no idea how someone like @thecrafsman produces a video a week! Amazing! I'm just glad you like the videos. I still have so much to learn about video making. Hopefully with more practice I'll improve and I'll also get more efficient. Thanks again! It means a lot to me to hear that people enjoy these things.

This is one of the best make videos ive ever seen! Really fascinating and brilliantly executed too. Not only that you are obviously a superb film maker too (a very powerful combo!). I love the animations and breviety... from someone that tries and fails to do the things youve done in this video im in awe! Love the little casting flask too, did you make it? Ive recently lost my youtube mojo (mainly the editing workload) but your video has reminded me what its all about, thanks so much. You’ve prompted me to give it another go. Subbed (obvs!)
@retrotechjournal

I'm glad you liked it! I'm kind of thrilled that you said "and brevity..." I was so struggling to get the thing under 10 mins and I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I know no one actually cares how I made the ferule, etc but I just couldn't cut it out of there. lol I think my main problem is I kind of edit one build montage at a time and then when the whole thing is done I don't want to re-edit each sequence to make it hold together more as a whole. I totally feel that "editing workload" thing. Each shoot it a project itself. This took 10x as long to do just because I was filming it. Ja I built that flask. I built the riddle, furnace, the burner, everything. I used to be very into foundry work a long time ago, and still have all the stuff in tubs under the house. Once in a while I want to cast something and it's nice that I still have all the tools down there. At my previous house I had a whole sand table, but these days I just don't have room for something like that in my garage. I'm glad you've decided to give it another shot! Building and sharing is fun!

@@retrotechjournal I agree with @Julian HG 100%. My question is, how long did it take you to film this and how long to edit it?
@retrotechjournal
@retrotechjournal 3 года назад
@@jamessheridan88 Well filming a build always takes way longer than just doing a build. I think I spent something like 5 weeks doing the build/filming although that was just scattered nights and weekends. I have a job/family and this is just a hobby. Not sure how long the edit took. I guess I could look at Premier auto saves to see. I basically did it over the holiday break. Looking at the auto saves looks like I worked on it from Dec 30th -> Jan 5th. So something like 7 days. That was almost all of it, but then I kept thinking I'd shoot some more animation about pattern design and kept putting off shooting the talking to camera stuff (which I find stressful) so I didn't work on it at all until May when I just shot the talking to camera segment and called it done. So like one more day of shooting/editing then. I tend to have this problem where I shoot/edit various segments but then hem and haw over how to stick them all together into some sort of whole. Hell I'm doing that again now. I have 2 Christmas builds that I shot, and have most of the pieces edited, but haven't managed to shoot the talking to camera/glue parts to make them into actual post-able videos. Hopefully I'll do that before May this time. lol

The good news is that AL is fairly forgiving so you can still get decent results without knowing a lot of those details. This was more of a "once though the process lightly" kind of deal. Thanks! I try to pick the music before doing the edit which can be a little strange and time consuming. Listening to fragments of a 100 songs to find something you like and you think fits is crazy making.

Thanks! It is true I didn’t strictly need a match plate for some simple feed system stuff, but I wanted to show the whole process so if folks were dealing with a more complicated part they’d still have some idea how to do that.

I'm glad you like it! I was a bit worried that people interested in looms might not be interested in this. :] My production rate for videos is super low because they're so much work. For every one thing I video there are a zillion things I build that go undocumented. Still the videos are fun to do. Thanks for subscribing I appreciate it!

🥰 I have been working on more. No worries. I have one 2/3 done, but keep getting distracted by other projects/ideas. It's sad when I've built the project and shot the stop motion and then the remaining stuff is all the talk to camera/stitching together, but the physical project is effectively over. I have to trick myself into getting the video done. I swore I'd work on it this 3 day weekend, but instead I've been making a brass tubing cutting machine. A process I call "Procrastinvention". 😆

@retrotechjournal
@retrotechjournal Год назад
Thanks! You called it. I put an insane amount of time into making the videos. Once in a while if I have an idea for a crazy shot I'll spend an entire day filming/editing just to get some 4 second shot. In my injection molding video there's a shot where the camera moves down with the band-saw blade, and goes through the material. I spent a whole day filming that. I had to take my band-saw apart and make an adapter so I could run it smoothly at low speed using my drill, etc. Total insanity. lol. But fun to do. ;]
