Thanks for showing this. I have struggled with depression for years and have started drawing and painting again. And this inspires me to start drawing realistically.

This was the method taught to me in my college art class. We upscaled a magazine ad for our final. Its been 20+ years since college and I’ve gone back to the grid at times to re-train my brain/eyes to see the grid without making one. I absolutely love this method.

In High School in drawing II class we learned this method. We had to pick two drawings! I enjoyed doing them! One of the ones I did was of Al Hirschfield's caricatures for the Jerry Lewis Labor day Telethon 1973.

Have watched a few videos on the grid method but this one explains it in a lot more detail with great tips e.g. the view finder. My level of drawing is just above stick man. But I’m inspired to give this technique a go and see what happens. Many thanks for this great tutorial. I will certainly be checking out your other videos now. 😁

This is amazing, I am inspired. What advice would you give to make it larger than the reference photo?
@markliamsmith
@markliamsmith 6 месяцев назад
Just use the same number of square. Example, the reference photo could have 5x7 half-inch square and the drawing could have 5x7 three-inch squares. It’s the 5 x 7 part that’s important.

@markliamsmith
@markliamsmith 2 года назад
Thanks! I recommend starting with a scribble. Just scribble all over you page. Then put your pencil down, look, and wait. Shapes start to appear in the scribble. Add details to those shapes. This will help strengthen your imagination.

pretty late to comment here and idk if youll see this but i friggin love the grid method, i can craft basically any reference i want through AI + Photoshop, ive been drawing with the grid method for years and it saved me alot of time from learning anatomy and perespective (which i know i should learn anyways but it allowed me to just straight out of the gate draw things i like) and i managed to advance really far really fast, im now working on using progressively smaller and smaller grids so i can eventually get to 4x4 and eventually just be able to draw like this freehand from just the reference
@markliamsmith
@markliamsmith 6 месяцев назад
For sure. The grid is great for replicating images. That is just one small subset of drawing.

The view finder is the missing piece to this technique 🤩. Is there any way you could show us how to change the size of something using a grid finder? I struggle with that.
@markliamsmith
@markliamsmith 2 года назад
First set your ratio. Eg. 1 inch on the original = 3 inches in the drawing.
@mikebillinghay5036
@mikebillinghay5036 2 года назад
Easiest way to do this is to upscale the grid on the paper you are drawing on. For example if the original size dimensions are 10” by 5” use, say, 20” by 10” on the drawing and scale everything up double. Takes a bit of working out but once you get the hang of it it’s really helpful.

Sir, l must say...1st of all thanks... next.. Do you have a similar technique for making a large panting from a small photo?
@markliamsmith
@markliamsmith 8 месяцев назад
Thank you! Yes- it’s the same technique. As long as the NUMBER of squares is the same for the painting and the photo (example 20 x 30), you can do it. Just make the painting square larger. Example- the painting has 20 x 30 squares where each square is 4cm. The photo has 20 x 30 squares where each square is 1cm or 5mm. This is called scaling up (making it bigger).

Why not use a projector? It is a whole lot faster. It is also how Norman Rockwell made all of his paintings, he projected images onto the canvas first.
@markliamsmith
@markliamsmith 2 года назад
I have used both. Projectors are good but they have different advantages and disadvantages. The grid is better to minimize interference from the original. The projector is quicker.

Wouldn’t tracing paper be sufficient till you get comfortable instead of this
@markliamsmith
@markliamsmith 2 года назад
You could as long as you’re happy with the final drawing being on very thin paper.
@starladawne4719
@starladawne4719 2 года назад
It doesn't train your eye in the same way. Tracing is good for beginning stages of improving hand-eye coordination but doesn't do anything for how you see things. With the grid method, you are still having to look at something, hold that idea in your head and then reproduce it onto a blank paper. The grid just helps break it down into smaller, more manageable bits. As you progress, you can make bigger squares or even develop a mental grid to visualize over an object you are drawing from life. Those level-ups aren't really possible with tracing.
@jackfelldown1
@jackfelldown1 4 месяца назад
Grid technique. The reason it's controversial isn't because it's cheating, but because it slows down the development of your drawing abilities. It can also give you tunnel vision if you don't apply it properly. Sure, if you become really comfortable with it, you can slowly try leaving that comfort zone, but you'd learn a lot more just learning construction stuff. And it will be a lot faster.
