Learn to drive an RV Class C Motorhome - I learned the HARD WAY!

They showed me how to use the generator, refrigerator, water pump, leveling jacks, 30amp electric, black tank, grey tank, fresh water, city water, AC, furnace, stove and oven but they didn’t show me how to drive! I didn’t realize, after 5 minutes of driving, that I’d have to make wide turns and I hit the pole at the gas pump. I scraped about 10 feet of the driver side of the rig and didn’t know how to get myself out of it, so I ended up scraping it forwards and then backwards and then PANIC!

Also....let me recommend a utube channel called RV street....this guy will teach you everything you need to know to keep your RV running beautifully....how to clean your air conditioner....disinfect your fresh water tanks and much much more. And best if all....he speaks plain and simple.put him on your favorite. You'll be glad you did.

Jo, remember these 3 thoughts when driving a Big RV/Rig. 1) ALWAYS think ahead at least 1-2 miles of your destination, and make sure it's compatible to DriveThru, or having large turning areas. 2) ALWAYS make WIDE TURNS with EVERY maneuver because you'll need it ( Gas Station Pumps have those bumpercar platforms down low to protect their pumps, which are not easily visible to your mirrors ). Height is your enemy, 3) ALWAYS get out and check BEFORE ENTERING or BACKING to see if there are any CLEARANCE ISSUES ( i.e. Low Hanging/Overhanging Limbs ) that are NOT in your mirrors. Once you've driven a long distance, and drive around LA, which I have several times ( Seattle to LA to San Diego, Long Beach, Huntington Beach, SOCAL ), you'll get comfortable to the RV's handling and steering in reference to your capabilities. Finally, once you've knocked off " the vehicle newness/paint ", you're ready to enjoy it and repair/maintain it to your criteria. CRITICALLY, when emptying the tanks, FIRST : Release the Black Tank and let it drain ( get use to HOLDING THE HOSE in place, no leakage is your goal ), then close it. SECOND : Release the Grey Tank and let it's water to " initially " flush out your " Stinky Slinky Hose " as it also empties ( and close it ), thereby saving water. Then use the water hose at the Dump Station to totally flush the Stinky Slinky Hose before stowing it away. Use Gloves, Hold your nose, or trick Jaxx into doing it ( tell her it will make her a Better Individual For Life ). I'll check in on you guys, so roll-on RV Ladies !!! Always, Syn Silver.

I think one of the best pieces of advice I got was SLOW DOWN! there's no countdown timer. don't let anyone rush you. If you have to get out of the RV 6 times while backing into a space, that's perfectly okay. It's your rig and your life. Along with slow down is don't let anyone distract you. Most mistakes made with RV's are either because you were rushing, or someone distracted you and you forgot what you didn't do yet. ;)

OMG....I swear I bought my RV one year and a half years ago....Mine is a little longer but like you I have never driven one. The very, very first ride home from dealer ship I took a turn to close and hit a yellow picket fence that hit the same area as you and about the same damage actually mine damage was worse not that Im competing! So crazy....Ive done my novice body work on it and its as good as it will be.....you are not alone.

You can get backup camera kits that include side cameras. This way not only do you have a backup camera to see that thing you're about to back into, but when you turn on your signals to change lanes the camera on that side turns on and you can see if something is in your blind spot. Highly recommend something like this.

Congrats on getting Betty Lou love the name and I also liked Baby blue. And you’re absolutely right the smaller mirrors are your friends I rely on them all the time while driving or changing lanes. My backup mirror I don’t trust objects are closer than what they appear when I look at the backup camera, and for some reason they look farther away. So this is something I will have to address. Just got my RV {23ft} in Jan and did a couple of shakedowns. Now I’m on the road for the next four months and I learn something new every day. So all I can say is just take your time and pretty soon you’ll be a pro at least that’s what people have told me and so far been on the road since July 1st and yes my driving skills have improved tremendously and now I’m starting to use my Cruise Control to make sure I maintain my sped between 60 and 65. I’ve done 70mph a couple of times but not really comfortable with that. I’m also using RV life for mapping to different destinations. I provide my height and length and RV life gives me RV safe routes to use.

I hate that you scuffed it up ! But the deal with these RVs is you have to think wider on all turns ! Good thing to me it doesn't look that bad and you might be able to buff out most of the yellow paint, Very cool rig also!

You should pick up a backup camera and monitor it will make it easier to back up plus you can see cars behind you while you are in traffic and always swing wide with your turns it takes some getting use too but after awhile it becomes second nature

I'm liking your story, I recently got a travel trailer and have had a couple adventures with it so far. In a few days we're heading to the top of the state (Michigan's upper peninsula). I'm sorry about your scrape at the gas station, I almost did that a couple weeks ago. I subbed, I hope you keep the story going.

Hi! Your video just popped up, of your 1st day with the RV and I was laughing with you, because I would've been feeling all those emotions had I gotten my Class C finally. Then, I HAD to watch you driving around IKEA. Lol I'm a subscriber now, because I want to see how you learn the ins and outs of driving and caring for a Class C. I will be learning right along with you. I've had a dream of getting my own Class C and traveling around and seeing God's creations all around us. So, if you don't mind, may I live through your experiences? Thanks for sharing your life and RV experiences. Tonda in Ohio

Also for some reason they never put a stove in mine. They put in the microwave/convection oven. I tried to buy one and they said there is no way to hook it up, so it looks like i will be doing an induction burner, Im bummed, i really wanted a real stove, i will be living in mine too.

I bought an old 1995 class c and I took out my vinyl stair railing when I first pulled it out. I was parked in front of my house and I needed to pull out and get sorta in the middle of the road to back up 25 feet. I turned slightly left and pulled up and out about 10 feet. Well that rear bumper snagged that railing and ripped it out of the ground. I broke the lens on the marker light. I blamed it on my son because he was my director lol. It's only 23' long and I'm better at it now. Do you have problems seeing out the right window when turning left at a slight angle.

It's just like driving a pickup that's 11 feet longer than normal. When you hear something scraping down the side of the RV, it's a good idea to stop and back up instead of continuing to scrape up the rest of the side. ;) Just laught it off. Life is for learning. When you know everything, that's when life is no longer worth living.

I did. I flew to pick it up and had no essentials. I didn’t know how to use anything. So, yes, I stayed in hotels on the way home. And I threw out the mattress it came with. My mattress from home fit right in there!

Awwww poor dear.....you'll get it...though I can get it why you are depressed....I'm fortunate in a way as my ex husband taught me to drive an 18 wheeler. Always think of yourself as extra extra long....make ALL right turns very.very wide...do like the truckers do and TAKE UP 2 LANES TO MAKE THAT RIGHT TURN AND GO SLOW. F** whoever that is behind you honking. Just smile and wave at them....also....when getting fuel....try going to truck stops. Get a truck stop app to tell you where they are and your route around them...back in the 90s...you used to be able to get a truck stop book of all the truck stops...the good.the bad and the ugly...they are graded...just like restaurants.... and in the south...I'm talking below the Mason Dixon line....most truck stops are hell holes....just get your ⛽️. And get out....BUT....this WAS back in the 90s....things might? Have changed? And truck stops are so much fun to walk around! They really are. Check out the Little America's in Wyoming...I remember the first one I ever 👀 saw. Went to use the bathroom and I swear I was floored! It looked like a fancy ld west bordello!!! Velvet in the walls and everything ! Knotts Berry Farm would have been amazed to see that!

Yes, only for the drive home from the dealership. I flew on a plane to buy it so I had nothing. No sheets, no towels and I didn't really know how to use anything. I was nervous and felt more comfortable figuring everything out once I got home.
