This series of Card Magic Tutorials on my channel will explain the most fundamental techniques along with some strong card tricks -- everything in the series is fully self working and requires no sleight-of-hand. But, you'll still want to practice the card handling with precision to prepare yourself for future techniques and tricks.
Learning to properly hold a deck of cards is, bar none, the most important technique in all of card magic. If there are any problems with the initial grips you learn, you'll run into challenges time and again with any tricks and moves you attempt. If you learn the grips properly, however, your life will get much easier as you continue on your journey.
Note that Dealing Position is sometimes called "Mechanic's Grip" and End Grip is sometimes called "Biddle Grip."
CREDITS:
Dealing Position and End Grip are described in a variety of sources. I first encountered these grips in Card College Volume 1 by Roberto Giobbi. That's also where I got the holding-a-bird analogy from. In Card College, Giobbi created a systematized vocabulary and framework for learning sleight of hand with cards which I draw on in this video. However, there are many critical details often left out of both written and video instruction that I've encountered through practicing and in this video, I try to cover those in as much depth as possible.

This is exactly why I'm drawn to sleight of hand so much, why I love practicing it and watching it. It might be one of the hardest skill sets to learn. There is so much nuance you almost can't understand it unless you try it for yourself. The amount of dexterity that needs to be learned to do most of these movements takes hours and years in most cases to perfect. And that's practicing every day. I wish I wasn't 40 years old already so that I can have 40 extra years to learn everything. I should've never stopped when I got out of High School. I've been picking up the slack the last few years though. And you, my friend, think extremely thoroughly and your neuro-science background really shows, especially with your and performance and patter. You think about everything possible simultaneously. A true multi-tasker. I like this about you. I'll be lurking and watching all your videos over time. I'm in.

Thank you for this, Daniel. I was quite surprised when you took down the previous video (grips and holding the break) as I wondered if you had decided against posting such tutorials. I see now that you have just brought in a lot more detail. Exemplar clarity in instructions and explanation! The precision with which you have included the physics, body posture and various other details leaves no doubt in the mind of the viewer. I believe your work has the potential to become an collection which can surpass various other legends while building on them. Being available on RU-vid might just be its greatest strength. Thanks once again, Daniel. Hope to learn a lot more from you.! :)

Thanks! And yup, I wanted to go into more detail than I did in that previous video. I also decided that for publicly available videos, I wanted to focus more on basic card handling and self-working techniques/tricks. I'm currently working on an online course that will teach more advanced sleight-of-hand. But these fundamental techniques lay the groundwork for everything that follows.

You are such an EXCELLENT teacher. I train athletes to learn specific skills and one of the greatest techniques is to learn slowly and once you are proficient then practice Faster than you would in an actual performance/game... this slows everything down (in your brain) when it comes time to perform. This one tip can save magicians YEARS of practice ... it has helped me greatly in the past few months (I'm new to magic)

Fun fact, because the first few tricks I learned were self working and there were no slights, I held the deck with my right hand, because I'm right handed. Three years later and now I'm executing all of the hard moves with the left hand. It was the stupidest mistake but now whenever the deck is on the table it gives me freedom to execute the same sleights with two hands and I basically have two right hands. The down side is that it's hard for me to learn the reverse fan, so every fan of mine shows a blank deck of cards
@DanielRoyMagic
@DanielRoyMagic 3 года назад
Yup, I find that handedness is a challenge that a lot of students run into. It's really important to be consistent!

I am starting from scratch and in the left hand dealing position i am unable to separate evenly my three fingers on the side. I always tend to join my ring and pinkie fingers. Am i doing something wrong or the shape of my hand and fingers could be the problem?

Hi Daniel, as a left hander when fanning the cards face up in my right hand you can’t see the suits or value. What should I do?
@DanielRoyMagic
@DanielRoyMagic 2 дня назад
You can either learn a reverse fan (put the cards much lower in your hand and fan in the opposite direction) or learn the fan in the left hand. Turns out there are very few situations in magic where you actually need to fan the cards and show all the faces, so doing this one technique with the opposite handedness is fine. Also, if you're looking for left handed peeks, check out Lessons in Card Mastery by Darwin Ortiz.

The problem for me is that, not even just in magic but in general, I use both my right and left hand. For instance, I dribble a ball with my left hand and catch a baseball with my left hand, but I throw with my right hand. I’m mainly a righty because I write with my right hand, but I also do things with my left hand so it’s weird. And by magic, I have the problem that you describe. I can only hold a pinky break with my right hand (it just doesn’t feel comfortable in my left), I do one handed cuts with my right hand, i spring cards with my right hand...but with my left hand I dribble cards, do double lifts in that hand...so yeah I’m all over the place and it does get in the way sometimes which is annoying
@DanielRoyMagic
@DanielRoyMagic 3 года назад
Hi Clint, What you need to do is “decide” on your handedness and simply learn/re-learn everything that way. Just choose the handedness that feels more comfortable in general. You’ll run into problem after problem if you don’t adopt a consistent handedness, and then eventually, you will just have to relearn moves the other way around. Luckily, it’s actually much easier to learn a move once you’ve learned it in the other hand. You won’t necessarily have the muscle memory yet, but you intellectually know what to do.
