I sincerely do hope that you are still with us and producing beautiful paintings Len. At 77 I am trying to resurrect my oil painting as a pass time and it is not easy. However the way you teach is truly inspiring and I hope that you are still teaching guys like me. I did read that these lessons are now about 30 years old.

I seem to have gone back in time! Spending an evening with an earlier version of Len :) What I enjoy is the fearless approach. Painting should not be scary, it should be a pleasure to spend time doing it. Wow, these were put up long ago, thanks!

Hi Graham This painting style is a skill which takes a little time to master. That is why my paintwithlen website had the 28 lessons arranged with the very simple paintings first. You might be rushing a bit but if you keep painting your hand will learn to control the brush. Making a mess can be good - you learn from your mistakes. I will put the Snow Capped Peaks video up soon on my website then I'll take a break. Cheers Len

That is a size 12 round hog bristle brush - about 16mm round.- a 3/4 inch house painting brush will do the job.

Thanks for getting back to me, As I understand the fat over lean technique, basically means adding more oil(fat) on each subsequent layer to prevent the top layer from drying before the previous layer, resulting in cracking etc. With the technique that you use, which is wet on wet, I'm guessing that is not a problem, I am going to give the kerosine a go, just ordinary kero? Once again thanks for your time and all of your wonderful work
@lenhend
@lenhend 10 лет назад
Yes ordinary kero. I might add - trying to dab thick paint over thinner (runnier) wet paint can result in the brush picking up paint rather than putting it down - often seen when linseed oil is used.

Using oil with wet on wet, when mixing your colours, what medium or ratio, do you use with the fat over lean principle, quite confused, love your videos, and have done a number of your paintings using acrylics, would like to have a go using oil
@lenhend
@lenhend 10 лет назад
Hi Alan I have never heard of the 'fat over lean' expression. When working wet on wet with oils I try to have my paint so as it is all of the same creamy consistency that will not run down when I place a big thick blob on a vertical palette. Linseed oil will make the paint slimy and cause endless problems - KEROSENE is my choice for thinning oils and cleaning up.
