Regarding the classic "rats in a cellar" level 1 quest...once when I ran a 3rd edition game my players jokingly demanded a tutorial quest after all meeting up in a tavern. I sent them to get a cat down from a tree. The ranger decided to climb up and roll Handle Animal. It failed on a natural 1. The cat, who'd gone from confused through afraid to extremely angry over the course of two hours stuck up there took a swipe at him. Crit. While the ranger lost a significant chunk of his starting HP (2, but this was before you got guaranteed max HP on lvl 1) everybody had a good laugh, and I asked for a climb check to keep his footing on the branches. Failed. A bit of fall damage later and the ranger had to be brought back from the brink of death by the cleric's very first healing spell. This adventure kind of set the tone for that whole campaign.
Wonderful playthrough guys! Started running this for a party of 3 and was combing youtube for some inspiration and this really helped set my mind at ease. Being a new DM it is a weird feeling to try and not feel unprepared but also not trying to drive myself crazy by attempting to plan for every possibility. It's nice to see how someone like Geoff just rolls with what the party gives him. Thanks guys, top marks!
By the way, the reason why owlbears exist is that Gary Gygax, not having a lot of high-quality miniatures to work with, got a bunch of cheap plastic kaiju toys at a yard sale somewhere and declared them to be various monsters. The Owlbear is one of these (and in earlier editions the kaiju heritage is a lot more obvious), the Rust Monster and Bulette are others.
Very nice playthrough, in fact, yours is the only actual play I could listen to all the way through for this. I know you changed things from the module, but it worked out so well, including the hell chickens I was already planning to incorporate things from the Songs of Chaos third party book, and this playthrough has given me much more confidence to do so
Wait. A death cleric who respects the cycle of life and loves his food and ingredients... Matt, are you playing Brian from Dominic Deegan, Oracle for Hire?
Really fun guys! A DM question - where did you get the idea for the different temples or do you have a place I could find those? I would love to add those to my home game!
Snd is awesome. I mean, I wish it didn't take me so long for getting into it. I didn't even consider it as something to peak my interest until I stopped haunting the aol rp chat rooms. (Stop thinking dirty. Not that kind of rp.) What I love about both of them is they offer opportunities for creating a massive interactive novel with intertwining stories and multiple directions you can take them in, with players and dms contributing something and taking something different, making a unique experience all of it's own!
I think he forgot to tell SVP to check his spells. Level 2 does not give a new spell level but he will be able to prepeare at least one more spell and also probably gain at least one spell slot in a level he already has. Also he ought to be large when transforming into a Dire Wolf rather than remain medium size. Can have impact on party movement but also on his options for stuff like oportunity attacks.
@@vukvidanovic8276 probably gets paid to run games. A pro gm is someone that had been putting together and running games for a long period of time. So it's likely that the person runs games full time and probably gets paid while running them.
Poor SVP... He's too new to realise what he's getting himself into... At the end of the adventure, and the DM says... you can leave the island with the others, or stay at Dragons Rest... loosing control of the character, for it to be used by DMs in the future... yes the character will go on, every time there is a visitor to the island he will come out, noble husband to a dragon elf... here to help lost adventures or fight off those who would take his brides treasures
47:00 your inclusion of a race of chickens that is inherently "evil and from hell" is hurting this game a lot. Where's the extra quest where you can side with them and discover their actually the good guys? Bigots.
