Nice video Joe...Had my first sail ever the other day on a 14 that I bought. Wind was extremely light, 3-4 kts and I learned something very interesting. I was trying to sheet in to obviously get some speed out of the boat but nothing was happening. The low wind would just hit the sail and stop. I then tried sheeting out and that's when I started to pick up some speed??? In that light of a wind condition, "loosening" the sail gave it the ability to "capture" the light breeze and give the sail a nice curve. I also tried playing with the traveller a tad to optimize. I probably ended up getting 5-6 kts of speed out of her on a glassy lake and I'm hooked!!! On my way out again today...
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 3 года назад
Nice, good to hear that you're hooked already! Yes over sheeting the mainsail is going to stop the boat, always better to be a bit too loose than a bit too tight.

I had a blast sailing a simple little Hobie Cat (no jib) at a resort in St. Lucia. I had a bit of experience with windsurfer previously but I was a total novice at sailing a boat. I think I got a quick sailing lesson and then I was off. There’s something special about the feeling when you first sheet in the main and you feel that puuuuuulll and she takes off. I had it going pretty fast for a beginner with just a bit of heel. If it got too tippy i steere into the wind a bit. It all seemed very controllable. I did a lot of beam reach but i would steer it into a close reach and close haul before tacking - although I had no idea at the time about the points of sail. This is a great video and makes me want to get out there again.

Good luck! It's a very exciting time for you - just start off with lighter wind and you'll be good. The 14 is tricky but with some technique and patience you can do it. If you're able to practice some capsize training in a safe - shallow place with someone holding the boat at the front that will help.

Great tutorial!! Ive been hesitant to sail again after i flipped a hobie with a bad tac the last time I went. I just haven't felt confident that I wouldn't do the same thing again because I wasn't certain what exactly caused it to happen. After watching your video I was able to identify a series of errors that caused it. i learned so much from just this one video. You are an really good teacher! Thank you 🙏!! Can't wait for give it another go this season. Oh and thank you for the consideration of my bad kneesl!! How did you know!? 😂😂

@@JoyriderTV Jib prob helps cause it will pull the front of the boat off the wind I'm guessing? Any other boat that might be a bit easier to sail (I'm looking for a cat that would mainly be sailed single hand but I can take another person out on. thx for your great vids! how important is it to carry speed into the tack? I have gotten stalled often enough by going too hard on the rudders (and killing speed), but I see in this vid the boat looks pretty well stalled during your tack but you still get underway np post tack. Is there a sweetspot in terms of rudder angle to maintain speed through the tack?

I'm an experienced sailor but I'm new to H16s, and I always seem to have trouble getting the mainsail up high enough to where the bead on the halyard will catch in the notch on the front of the mast. More than once now, I've thought that the bead was caught in the notch, only to have the mainsail slip down 10-12" once we get underway. Any tips for raising/"notching" the mainsail? Great lesson! So how would you do a beach landing, with 3 ft surf? Rudders up, and drive it into the sand, or do you still round up, luff sails, and jump off to control the bow?
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 3 года назад
If it's a sandy beach i would go straight up - come in on the back of a wave - not with one behind you for a more controlled landing. If the beach has stones or rocks then the latter will be kinder to your boat.
@Hobie_16
@Hobie_16 3 года назад
If you round up and then back up onto the beach, make sure your rudders are locked up when it gets shallower. You don't want to have a wave push you backwards over top of your locked downed rudders and they hit the bottom. If this happens, something will probably break: rudder, gudgeon, gudgeon bolts, rudder pin or a broken transom (or some combination of these).

How do you prevent losing the boat if you get knocked or thrown off of the boat? Seems like that could easily happen if you hit a wake, aren't watching the boom, or even just slip and lose your balance.
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV Год назад
Hi Todd. I'll talk about this in today's Live Q+A (1730 greek time but available to watch afterwards) the main safety that you have is that you always hold onto the mainsheet. I've made some videos testing what would happen: Falling off SOLO light wind ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qld2ONb0DVE.html Falling off SOLO medium wind ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GyqydQrxy2I.html Falling off SOLO strong wind ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5O0OLiNhiSI.html

@@JoyriderTV And Since you are listening, you are onto something mentioning people with limited knee motion, like me. How might a person move best on the boat if they can't fold their knee under them? I have a knee replacement. Thanks!

"the dolphin striker" ?!?! 🤣
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 3 года назад
A dolphin striker (an older term for a martingale boom or simply a martingale; sometimes called a striker) is a small vertical or near vertical ancillary spar spanning between the bowsprit and martingale thereby redirecting the tension in the forward end of the martingale slightly more vertically. This vertical component is necessary to more effectively oppose the forestays' mostly upward tension on the forward end of the bowsprit than would be the case in the absence of the dolphin striker.

Rock the catamaran for long term. I started on a H16 as a kid and was soloing at 16. My dad had 1-lesson with the guy who sold it to him. If I had Joe 35 years ago, I would have been expert, but it was just me, the wind, and a skinny 30-mile long lake. I just got back in it after more than 30-years and Joe made it easy. Get involved in social media with local Hobie and Multihull Groups. They are awesome in Arizona and want you to join them.
