Ready for some Woodworking? How about we Learn to Turn: Chair leg edition! While visiting my new neighbor Greg Pennington earlier this year, I made another chair, a milking stool, a pitchfork, and some other fun stuff I can't wait to share. Now having built six chairs, I've started to get pretty competitive with myself with my woodturning, specifically spindle turning, turning a square block into a double bobbin chair leg. I've now got my turning time down under five minutes per leg, so I thought I'd share a few of my favorite woodturning techniques and show an in-depth look at how I turn a double bobbin chair leg. Spindle turning is the first step in woodturning, and learning to master a wood turning gouge is the easiest way to learn not only to hog away a ton of wood in a hurry, but also to shape your spindle (in this case a chair leg) and turn it to it's final dimensions. Here you'll find a few woodturning tips and tricks I hope you find helpful whether you're making a windsor chair or turning a pen. Using a lathe is really fun, I like it because it allows me to start and finish a woodworking task in a relatively short timespan. When some of my woodworking projects carry on for weeks or even months at a time, it's always nice to have a small woodturning win on the lathe. Looking to learn woodturning basics? Start here.
