Taps & Dies are simple metalworking tools that let you cut threads into nearly any metal - but they have a reputation of being difficult and frustrating to use.

I have read that there are two types of dies. Some have round bodies, as in the video, and the others have hex-shaped bodies. The round dies are for making new threads. The hex dies are intended for cleaning up or repairing damaged existing threads. If you go shopping online, it's not always clear what is being offered - check carefully. I also believe (not sure) many dies offered are just 'Carbon Steel' which is OK for many jobs, but others are High Speed Steel (HSS) which should be used on harder metals. I'm no machinist, just a hobbyist, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Excellent video. Had a thought about how to keep the tap near-perfectly perpendicular. If you took a piece of tube stock that's about half the length of the tap and only slightly larger in diameter, you could use the piece of tube stock as a sleeve to keep the tap more perpendicular until it's dug in enough to where you don't have to guide it much anymore. Just a thought.

This is really helpful. I'm trying to get an old Moto Guzzi motorcycle shifter linkage repaired and the factory part is a piece of rod with M6 left handed threads on one side and right handed threads on the other side. I can't find this part anywhere. Someone suggested making my own with a die and your video makes it look like a great solution.

Very good description. Only you must counter sink before first tap. Machine shops and tool shops do this as part of there procedure. Not doing this leaves a burr where the first thread starts. So counter sink the major diameter minimum. Also standard tap drill charts are for 75% of thread which is fine for standard application.

You only need to countersink or counterbore if you care about having a flush bolt, in some cases depending on the use you are better off not countersinking or counterboring because of rust and corrosion

@Promethium666

You should use oil if working with any kind of metal, friction = heat = softer metal = warped metal = problem. Also if you have some bolts that have damaged threads you can run them through a dye to fix the threading.

@MAKE
@MAKE 7 лет назад
A half turn *is* a bit on the overkill side, sure. But when offering instruction online, it's a much clearer instruction for the novice user than "back it off a little bit before continuing". Plus, it helps build a slow, deliberate cadence to the procedure. Every tap we've even broken happened when we were in a hurry.
@sooth15
@sooth15 7 лет назад
It's not an exact science. A lot of the time you can go by feel. On soft metals like brass or aluminum you can do several turns before breaking the chips, but on harder metals like steel, you will want to do it more often. I believe that when threads are cut on a lathe (with normal tap and die tools) they don't even do the backing-off part.
@shilohsharps
@shilohsharps 7 лет назад
I was commenting that the voice over recommended a full turn(360 degrees) of the tap or die , but the video showed a half turn(180 degrees) before chip breaking. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r6Ijd9o-C10.htmlm45s and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r6Ijd9o-C10.htmlm14s

You have the die stock upside down. The ridge on the bottom is supposed to be on the opposite side you are threading it from so the die doesn't get pushed out as you screw it on.
@MrCbell57
@MrCbell57 3 года назад
Great explanation. I'm needing a fine threaded tap however. For small auto molding repairs to back sides. Adding althread studs since the pins broke off. They are 5/32 which I think is 8-32.What? That don't make since. 5/16 maybe?

@HRMMachinist

Often in the shop setting we just use a 45 degree chamfer as large as the depth of thread. As for on a lathe, are you referring to using a die set with the lather or are you referencing single point turning of a thread?

NO you need to back it off every 1/2 or 1/4 turn or its gonna get all jammed up with shavings. Also a very bad idea to use power tools for this. because if you break the tap off it's going to be a huge pain in the ass to remove it because it's hardened steel that is much harder than the steel are trying to cut threads into. drilling out hardened steel is nearly impossible

I find that even being careful, dies will often wander slightly off-angle, so that you can proceed only so far down the rod before it ploughs too far to one side to proceed any further. Am I the only one; is there a simple solution? (I have started clamping the die and an alignment block (with a hole in it) horizontally into the metal vice to keep things straight, and turning the rod slowly with a power drill...)
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 7 лет назад
Make sure that you "back off" and allow the metal chips to clear. if not, it could be that if the teeth are clogged up it is only cutting on one side, hence why it is wandering. for every half turn forward back it off half a turn to remove the chips. Ensure that every forward turn is s clean cut. Hope this helps. Dave.
@Promethium666
@Promethium666 5 лет назад
you need to use oil and to use the tool slowly making sure o back off as much as you progress in little steps as the removed material will clog the threads and put it off center. i secure a 3 point spirit level on my taps and dies whenever i use them so I can see how they are aligned.

@Mentorcase
@Mentorcase 7 лет назад
Watching him turn half a turn then backing half a turn was making me twitch, imagine doing it like that on a cover with 64 holes that need threading, generally one turn forward, half a turn to break chips then take up the slack and go another full turn. Threading aluminum without lube is very unwise it will gall and create a mess, good old WD40 makes a fine alloy cutting lube.

@12345NoNamesLeft

There is a formula to calculate it based on diameter. 1mm would be way too much on a 2mm shank and it would be way too little on a 30cm.
@HRMMachinist
@HRMMachinist 7 лет назад
Andrew Jolley tap drill size is 1 - pitch. So a 1/2"-13tpi thread would need a drill that is 1/2" - (1/13) or 0.5" - 0.077 = 0.423". Closest drill is 27/64" which is 0.4219". Same applies for metric threads.
