Thank you so much for this video. I was so lost on how to correctly read and pronounce words on my own. I kept wondering what the symbols above the letters were. It's been hard learning Vietnamese but I won't give up. It's a personal goal for me to learn. Practice makes perfect.

I'm started to learn vietnamese, I'm planning to go to Vietnam, I'd like to be able to communicate with the locals, at least some basics stuffs. This videos are really helpful, a lot of Thanks Lan! Btw, I'm a spanish native speaker, and it's pretty easy to make the "Nh" sound because of "Ñ" in spanish haha. Also, I'm studying chinese and thai, so tones are not "hard at all" But still harder than japanese and korean at least in the phonetic haha. But maybe chinese it's kinda easier than thai and vietnamese, imo, because of the hanzi, that helps me to get a lot of vocabulary because I already speak japanese so that helps me a lot in some characters xD

the way you have all 6 tones listed and read out one by one is how it should be for easier learning. Most videos that teach Vietnamese uses the "schooling" method: For example, "c, a, ca, sắc, cá" = c+a = ca [beginning result] + sắc (tone) = cá [end result], so it ends up being a formula when said, which takes a lot of time to comprehend. Therefore listing them one by one by repetition is an easier method to learn any language with tones. I learned Chinese that way. there's no names for the tones in Chinese just the number. But Vietnamese tones even though are a little similar to Chinese tones, they are still not the same. Born in south Vietnam, I believe southern Vietnamese accent is easier to learn than northern Vietnamese accent. Due to plenty of Chinese loanwords, sometimes the northern accent clues you in to the approximate sounds, so if you speak Chinese like me, you'll appreciate the fact some meanings can be correctly guessed via Chinese especially when a 2 syllable Vietnamese word is read out.

I've always wanted to learn how to read Vietnamese words and this series so far has been very helpful.

At 5:55, I didn't realize before that the "question mark" tone is pronounced differently in the North (up, then down) than in the South (down, then up). You also say in the South the broken tone is "very similar" to the question mark tone, but I thought the South simply did away with the broken tone (i.e., for words that had the broken tone they used the question mark tone instead), such that the South only has 5 tones(?)

In some words such as bảy and phở , There have always been sensible discrepancies in terms of tones between the way of pronunciation I learned and the way they are actually pronounced...

Excellent! Vietnamese and Cantonese are quite similar in terms of the "sounds".

I speak northern Vietnamese dialect as I got it from my mother (she has a Hanoi accent). The way my family pronounce the question tone is by going down and then up. I don't remember any northern Vietnamese speaker pronounce the question tone the way the girl did in the video (which is up then down).

I learned some Mandarin back in the day, this broken tone is the same as in Mandarin, and I call this "broken" tone the sexy tone 😅 isn't it? And now I perfectly see why girls from Vietnam were so damn good and fast learners in our Chinese class 😢😊 the trickiest part was to learn hieroglyphs and you're done✅ I want to learn some Vietnamese now. I'm so scared of letters 😂 my eyes are bleeding as if I look at Polish alphabet

Wow, someone finally explained how "no tone" really IS a tone (flat/high/long)...that didn't make sense to me before, and I've seen several YT vids about the tones... It still seems like a waste of time--for an outsider, anyway--to learn the NAMES of the tones, though...whatever the tones are, you just use them to say the word, right? ... who cares what they're called.

Im hoing to guess that Lan is from North Vietnam, due ro the pronunciation of dâ'u. I was taught unless the d has a horizontal dash on the stick then there isnt a 'z' sound to it.

First 3 Vietnamese tones (high flat, go up, go down) are very close to Chinese Mandarin, are not? What do you think about?

2:05 "in order to make a perfect up tone, you have to start low and go up SLOWLY"--sounds good in theory, but when I hear V-nese speakers talking a mile a minute (so to speak) they don't seem worried about being "perfect"(!). Properly saying a whole sentence with all up-tones (2:35), or with all of any one tone I guess, sounds like torture! (I think I would pass out.) :)

@6:56 The mo is supposed to be question tone but she read it as down tone. I don't know why she made this mistake when she is a native speaker and one who teaches tones! You can google translate "have to open window" to Vietnamese, you can hear the correct question tone there and realise she said it wrongly. @7:32 And the dot tone she said it here is inconsistent. The "duoc" and "goi" are in different tones from each other and from the rest of the words.

She was born in Cambodia, and her parents moved to Viet Nam when she was very young. She's Chinese blood, a Cambodian by birth, but lives in Viet Nam. Even your voice sounds like hers. I prefer the textbook pronunciation of ả, which is 214. My friends from Hanoi pronounce it as 21, which is very close to à = 31. However, in this video it is something like 453 ... again different.

Short Version : It's really hard.

Tones are what makes vietnamese hard to learn... but vietnamese people kindness is what makes one accept the challenge.

The good news is people in Vietnam are very forgiving even if you can't pronounce it perfectly. They will appreciate just the fact you're trying to speak their language. Many will even help you.

The tone is pretty much similar to my mother tongue Cantonese (9 tones). Feeling happy about this. However, pronunciation is still very hard for me. The combination of vowels is a lot more and I often mix it up. Master different Asian languages is my dream, I've done Japanese, now doing intermediate Korean on Prof. Yoon's channel, and Vietnamese here. Just brought a terrible Vietnamese course somewhere else last month and got it refund since that teacher can't even explain the 4 tones clear enough. I'm so lucky to arrive here, TVO is a wonderful teacher ^_^

Very interesting, I am learning Mandarin, both Vietnamese and Chinese are tonal languages. The interesting part is that while Chinese has only 4 tones Vietnamese has 6 tones. But most interesting of all however is the nice way this beautiful teacher teaches everything. Loved it! 😊

One thing I like about your videos is that as you pronounce a given Vietnamese word, you also give the English meaning of the word (at least sometimes)--for us English speakers, this is helpful for learning both pronunciation and vocabulary! :)

Well! I have a Northern Vietnamese accent, but I don't think they way you demonstrate Dấu hỏi (question tone) is right! The explanation is perfect! But the examples aren't really good (to me is incorrect)

It's funny how much more I hear in this video now, more than a year after I saw it for the first time :)
