With the basics out the way, we explore the sounds of oscillator 3 (the simpler "sub oscillator") and its corresponding waveforms.
In this series of videos you'll join me as I learn the ins and outs of the ASM Hydrasynth (Explorer). I've had it for about one month and used it to a limited degree alongside reading the manual. I'll demonstrate my end to end learning and exploration process starting with the basics of how to use the synth, through all the features, and ending with some sound design demonstrations.

Exactly the kind of series I was looking for. Thank you!

Thanks for your comment, and for watching. I'm glad to hear that: this series is how I approach a new synth, and if sharing that in a slightly more structured form is useful to others, that makes me happy! I appreciate your support.

Just wanted to say thanks a ton for this series. I just won a hydrasynth in a giveaway, and this series is helping me so much, as I'm pretty new to synthesis. Thanks for the work put into this

Thanks for your comment, and for watching. I'm happy for you: a Hydrasynth is a pretty great prize! Hopefully the series will give you what you need to really dig into the synth and get the best from it. Learning synthesis and sound design is a fun journey, so enjoy the ride!

Amazing what can be done with one oscillator, a simple wave shape, and bit of modulation. Very nice!

Thanks for the comment. One thing I quite like about the Hydrasynth, is that the range of features and possibilities is something of a microcosm of synthesis in general. To me that means: to know the Hydrasynth well, is to know synthesis well. Some of the things you learn as you dive deep into the synth, will pay dividends in your use of other hardware and software synths. This episode, and series, also demonstrates something I try and embrace; a complex synth doesn't mean you need to use every feature: use as little as necessary to achieving the sound you want. Enjoy your journey!

I think the motion you refer to around 3:02 is just the normal beating of fifths (or fourths too) resulting from the Equal Tempered Scale that most Western music (like pianos of the everyday variety) uses. Sometimes we witness a piano tuner listening for just the right ratio of these 'beats' to begin a tuning. It may be 4 beats in 5 seconds for that first fifth interval they start their tuning process with. Thanks for this informative video, btw!

Thanks for watching, and for your comment. Looking back, you are correct; as you say, the only ET chromatic interval that's a true harmonic is the octave. All these videos are recorded in a single take, while the family is asleep (0 time spent editing!), so I expect there are plenty of other errors throughout. Hopefully the core concepts aren't significantly impacted!

@@ChalkWalkMusic thanks for your reply! I'm now watching your Hydrasynth: Ep03, to find out about Oscillators 1 & 2 prior to my used one arriving. PS. Have fun with family, that rocks!

Is it possible to assign individual envelope for each of oscillators?
@ChalkWalkMusic
@ChalkWalkMusic Год назад
Thanks for your comment, and for watching. The oscillator, ring mod and noise levels are all available modulation destinations in the mod matrix. You can leave the mixer levels at 0 for an oscillator and modulate its mixer level with an envelope. Remember that the amplifier envelope is statically routed, so you need to make sure it's got a long enough release and a high enough sustain for the mixer envelope's actions to be audible.
