I've talked with Adam a few times about his sound. He has that list on his site about the all time greats, and one of his criteria is you have to be able to hear a few bars of them and know who is. Adam fits into that category, I think, although I still struggle to really articulate what it is that makes 'his' sound. I think that chord thrown in there is part of it. His playing has a particular crankiness... a lot of double stop-ish stuff. There is a whole subgenre of videos these days where musicians play one band's song in the style of another band. It would be interesting to see a panel discussion with some of the current players doing that, and discussing the different elements of different players style.

Thanks Tomlin! I follow Adam's channel as well as yours, and it's amazing, the quality of your teachings. In this Gussow lick, I thought I heard an octave tongue-block lick in the 2nd half of the lick. Am I completely wrong? is he using an octave pedal? And, btw, if he's doing the octave trick, thanks for having simplified the lick for us!

Thanks for the video Tomlin. I would do the timing as 1 ah 2 ah 3 e + 1 ah 2 ah 3. This might be too difficult for beginners and that is why i believe you said all eighth notes.

Well, as interesting as this video can be, it would only be fully completed after "teaching" or showing us the missing parts: what are the subtilities in Adam's playing that lick that make it sounds like this... He may use a lot of tongue slap, tongue block or double notes. I don't know because the mic and reverb/delay of the amp changes the result, but even acoustic it would show us some effects, advanced techniques. I watched the whole video waiting for a lesson on how to analyse and find those subtilities (that make all the difference in the end)
@RyanFreid
@RyanFreid Месяц назад
100%. I interpret this lick as tongue blocked splits for the majority of it...thats absolutely what Adam is doing. I got most of the lick down before he got through his first explanation...Thanks for isolating a cool lick, I guess...

What microphone do you use for these videos and would you recommend it for home recording? I'm looking for something not too expensive but that gives good quality. Currently what I use is too cheap and tends to not give me a good range of frequencies. My acoustic recordings lack middle and base.

newbie question! what's the reason of using headsets when you practice with a soundtrack? isn't it more difficult to ear yourself playing the harp then? thanks and great work by the way.

Hi Tomlin. Transcribing by ear looks fun, but do you ever simply use one of the readily available pitch monitor apps to speed up the process of finding the notes a player is using?

@brendanrobinson2415

I played it last night I was terrible, tonight felt easier. Sleep helps us remember But in general it would take me for 2 weeks to maybe a month practicing about 10 mins daily, to be prepared to play live Depends on how quickly people learn. Like Tomlin did it in a short period maybe took him 30 minutes all up. Me usually takes a month to be good. I’m 50 though So maybe if I was 20 I could possibly have it smooth enough to play live within a week. Actually if you play it quite slowly you’ll imprint it better. Then from time to time speed it up then back to slow. Another tip is to often stop and listen to the riff several times. Locking the notes your head. Along with the rhythm. As that’s more important than anything. Because learning the wrong rhythm it’s hard to undo in our heads. That’s why listing without playing is so important too! Another tip is with no harmonica imagine where the notes are. Do that a bit later in the process though. The point is to know ‘where’ the notes are, then imagine or play them whenever possible Have fun.
@brendanrobinson2415
@brendanrobinson2415 22 дня назад
At day 3 and I can play it the same speed. But am making mistakes as not fit muscle memory and note memory developed yet. I practice in the morning for about 10 times through the lick, then again 10 times at night. So it’s actually way less than 10 minutes a day and my brain is remembering. I also suffer from the disease ME/CFS which we have ‘brain fog’ so it’s difficult to remember things. But I am remembering how to do it!! I reckon if you did it 4 or 5 times a day and about 10 times per practise, you’d have this sussed in a week. Spending too much time on it in one go I believe causes people to learn slower. Because a huge part of memory is in between time of not doing it. That gives time for the brain’s neurons to lay down new pathways. And practising often in small amounts also triggers that memory.

@@TomlinHarmonica The notes Gussow plays (additionally) sound an octave below the notes you are playing. I suspect he's using tongue blocking to play them in octaves. This is in line with another comment above, pointing out the advanced techniques that are ignored in this video. It's fine to not address advanced techniques in a video aimed at beginners; just say "he's doing some other stuff that's beyond the scope of this video" and move on. But there's no reason to get salty and act like they're not audible in the original. We're not deaf, nor stupid.

Hiya, I hope I’m not being misunderstood. I do have bad hearing - I taught what I heard. I think it would be great for everyone watching if anyone can chime in and explain the notes I’m missing - this is helpful for everyone. No sarcasm or saltiness.
