You'll naturally start to unclip one side, don't neglect to occasionally unclip the non natural side to stop at lights. My best tip was to turn the handlebars slightly to the opposite direction as you come to the stop. You should end up leaning on the opposite side of the direction of your front wheel. Kind of related to counter steering. Most beginners get confident and when you will fall is because you fall on your unexpected side.

My wife has literally taken up cycling this week and we went straight to clipless pedals, just to rip the plaster off as quick as possible. Needless to say we had a few spills on our drive, but credit to her, she got straight back on the bike and is absolutely loving it. I found your channel a few weeks ago and showed it to her on Monday. We have binged watched SOOOO many videos on your channel and love you so much!

You can loosen the tension on the clip ins to make it easier to clip in and out of, helps when you are get used to them...

Another helpful and informative video Katie. I've been cycling for enough years that I remember actually having toe clips and straps. Then came along the clipless pedal system. I thought whoever came up with the idea was a genius. I've been told that the concept came from the snow skiing industry where you step in to a binding that locks you to the ski. Wearing cycling shoes was one of the best purchases I have made for cycling. The stiffness of the sole protects your foot and arches and also adds much power to your pedal stroke. Clipless pedals are a 'must have' option for cycling. Looking forward to more great advice from you. Thanks!

Yep went out for the first time on clipless 2 day’s ago , came to the first set of traffic lights got my right foot out ok but my involuntary body reaction wanted to put my left foot to the ground which I hadn’t taken out ..hence I was on the floor with blood running from more poor scratched up legs.....my advice to anyone would be practice, practice , practice , then when you think you’ve cracked it practice again until it becomes a natural action.....should have followed my own advice but didn’t ...🤷🏻‍♂️.. guess I’ve joined the club nobody has to pay to be a member of 🚴🏻..keep up the quality content 👌🏻

Ive been running Shimano SPD SL pedals the last 7 yrs. After watching your vlogs you inspired me to give the MTB SPD pedals a go. OMG why didn't I try these earlier. Love that I can walk around easy peasy with no chance of falling on my face. I did have some difficult getting a size 36 women's shoe with carbon sole, but BONT make a small MTB shoe for little tooties. Another positive I found to SPD pedals is I clip in so quick. Thats for the great vlogs Katie

Another great advice video Katie, I have tried clipless pedals outside and found after falling off, and my poor sight, means I ride flat pedals for my safety. But I do use them on my indoor trainer, which I find perfect, faster than my road speed, less ache in the legs. Hoping next week to ride one of your routes Saddleworth , Holme moss and Glossop, with the increase in my wife's care package. This series of videos offer great info for beginners to long in the tooth riders like me, take care and keep well, Alan.

Took me about an hour learning on an empty velodrome going in circles. Another tip, do a few laps slowly with only one cleat clipped in, then repeat for the other side - helps if there's no traffic etc when you're learning, of course I made a video of it - by sundown I had got it ! A year later I rode 100km in the Bathurst B2B :)

Thanks! One thing I’ve found is that not all clipless pedals are the same wrt ease of unclipping even after adjusting the tension. I now ride with the Shimano SPDs on my road bike as I’ve found them the easiest to unclip especially when riding in traffic. They go a long way to raising riding confidence as my greatest fear is not being able to unclip in traffic and falling into the path of a vehicle.

Katie! I love your videos and awesome content. I'm from Toronto and I started cycling back in July 2020 because of the pandemic. In Toronto, we have a bike-sharing program where could rent a bike for 30 mins per ride. I started to ride on those, then bought myself a hybrid bike in Aug, discovered that I wanted a road bike the whole time. Sold my hybrid and bought a second-hand road birk in Nov and haven't looked back since. Got a pair of Fiziks for Christmas and now getting used to riding with clipless pedals.

For mixed terrain cycling I've recently switched to trekking pedals - Spd on one side flat on the other shimano T8000 XT. Mostly use the spd, but in built up areas, or cycling on uneven ground or alongside canals, I use the Flat side. Also means when I'm touring I can cycle in ordinary shoes if I'll be walking a fair bit during the day. Very happy with the choice.

Ive just started cycling. I hated the idea of clipless and was definitely not going use them but I got them a week after my bike lol, 2 weeks later I couldn’t imagine not using them, its easy. I went mountain bike route of clipless for my road bike so I could walk in them and also use them on the flat side of my pedals for commuting and short rides. Highly recommended for beginners and commuters. Pedals Shimano M324 and SPD shoe.

It's also really important not to put your weight on the foot til it's definitely in. I took quite a few hits to the soft bits at the beginning from thinking I'd got it and then slipping off, especially with smooth plastic soles on SPD-SLs. Give it half a crank with just your clipped in leg, find the free pedal with your toe when it comes around to the top and then just kinda press your foot down with just your leg, rather than leaning your weight on it. Then, as soon as you hear the snap, you can dust those cars.

The (in)famous bus stop flop. I remember mine. I'd only been using clipless pedals for a few weeks. I unexpectedly came across some temporary traffic lights near my house. I tried to disengage my foot from the pedal and toppled over onto the road. Behind me was a van full of workmen and all I could hear was laughter as I got back up. No damage done, no injuries. But I was crimson with embarassment. I've never done it since.

3:29 Probably the best tip I've found on RU-vid. I modified this tip by using the clipped in side on where I would stop & start, trainer on the "hypothetical" always clipped in side. This way I practice clipping in, unclipping and most importantly leaning on the unclipped side.

If you are going down the MTB/SPD route to clipless, I highly recommend Shimano SH56 SPD "Multi Release" Cleats for first timers, they have all the same advantages as the standard ones (maybe a little more "floaty") but they release if you forget and panic, by the time they have worn out you will be used to them and you will have a set of brand new standard cleats ready to fit (the ones that came with the pedals).

Good morning Katie from an overcast Tasmania Australia this morning. Clipless pedals looks scary, I could see myself falling over when stopping a lot haha. Oh since I am completely new to cycling I would like to know why cyclist wear lycra. My friends have said omg your not going to be wearing lycra are you, and of course, I am overweight. I love the videos you are doing and also reading through peoples comments. I hope you and everyone has an awesome day. Oh my bike is now serviced and all is working well I am so happy. The bike shop was really good at explaining everything to me when I took my bike in for its first service yesterday. I still worried that I may not be able to get the back tyre off if I have to change a tube, time will tell.

One other tip is to lightly kick the top of the pedal with your toe and then clip in. The toe tap will line up the pedal for you to clip in. If you watch closely you can see Katie doing then when she demonstrates on the road shoes.

When cycling as a teenager many years ago I invested in cages. I proudly set them up and used them happily, then one day thought it would be a good idea to put my foot in then tighten the straps having set off. Got to the top my my street where there was a T-junction tried to pull my foot out and realised what I had done and knew there was no time to reach down and loosen them before the junction. Got to the junction, stopped and the inevitable happened. Then I was in the ridiculous position of lying in the road whilst trying to reach the straps to release my foot and untangle myself from the bike. A hard lesson learned!! It's funny now all these years later but definitely not at the time. Happy Cycling.

Something to add on the SPD cleats, they do two models SH-51 & SH-56. The 51s only release with a twist of the ankle either outwards or inwards, the 56 versions are multi release and unclip at any angle apart from pulling up. This version is far better and I feel is much safer in the event of a crash & much more forgiving if you forget you're clipped in when coming to a stop.

Great advice. Clipless the best upgrade you can get but will need a few training rides. Like the suggestion with the trainer, if only I tried that 😀

Clipping in and riding for me was easy. However, it was the sudden stops, with an immediate unclip, that really got my attention. A couple embarrassing falls is all it took for me to sort that out.

I am fairly new to cycling. I love your videos and watch them when you post them. I have used clipless pedals but have fallen a few times trying to unclip. I now have had a full knee replacement for medical reasons. I am about to begin riding again but am very skeptical about using the clipless pedals again in fear of falling on the replacement knee again. Do you have any suggestions on how to lesson this fear?
