Learning Disability in Higher Education and the Professor Student Relationship
The professor-student relationship in higher education may be one of mentorship, trust, and academia. In order to strive for this valuable relationship, we must adjust to the diverse population of students in higher education, particularly those with learning disabilities. A certain understanding of capability and confidence from both parties is needed in order to create an inclusive environment for prospering professor-student relationships. It’s time for students to advocate with a plan and for professors to listen with purpose. Altering how we take action will motivate professor-student relationships that will in turn stimulate growth within higher education.
A native of the coastal town of Montara, California, Lexie Garrity is a junior at Vanderbilt University. She divides her time between her studies in premed as a Medicine, Health and Society Major; her office as club co-president of the Disabilities Awareness Partnership (DAP); the Vanderbilt Club Soccer Team; her membership in Pi Beta Phi; as well as other work, and internships. Lexie is honored to talk about learning disabilities in the context of improving student-professor communication. Additionally, she hopes to motivate others who have been diagnosed with a disability to pursue their educational and professional dreams. Lexie knows she would not have achieved what she has to this day without her diagnosis in her senior year of high school, and the subsequent support of professors, family, and friends.

This made me emotional, because I also have a learning disability. It’s not always easy and in elementary school, I had teachers tell me that I wouldn’t be able to go to University, yet I am almost done my undergraduate degree in Psychology. We can succeed!!

You're not alone. There are a lot of us out there. This may seem cringy, but I always encourage myself by remembering the story of the tortoise and the hair. I consider myself a tortoises that will never stop. No matter how fast the hairs around me run I won't let myself down and will continue do my best. That's all you have to do. Just do your best.

What learning disability
@willthecreator

I just willed my way through college with my learning disability’s. I was tired of high school and middle school being in special ed classes because I knew the real world doesn’t care or understand. I didn’t seek any accommodations. It took me 7 years to earn my bachelors degree. I fought fought for it like my life depended on it and I was able to force myself to get it done. I don’t recommend not seeking help. But I just learn differently and I figured out the hard way that there nothing I can do to fix it.

Will Jones I 100% agree with you. My story is similar to yours.
@aaronhuang8425
@aaronhuang8425 4 года назад
Greetings Will & Megan, my story is also similar to both of you. I graduated with a Bachelor in Business (Finance Major) with ADD-Inattentive Type. My ADD is Co-Morbid with Dyslexia. I would 80% agree with you analysis. The part I mutually agree with your opinion is before a student seeks help or accommodations, students should at least spend a time (possibly few years) developing discipline and forcing (themselves/yourself) like your life depended on it and forcing (themselves/yourself) to get assignments done. This allows a student time to develop and master "real life" coping mechanisms. There is a major variable I feel we all need to address is everyone dyslexic or not "forgets/becomes rusty" of most things we learned in college. While "working out the rusty kinks" is "normal", it can be a crippling variable for a dyslexic graduate on the job, especially people who do not seek accommodations because the learning curve can be very high. The 20% where my opinion differs is when jobs require DETAILS. Remembering the "big picture" is sometimes not enough when a job requires error-free on your first try. Errors WILL you fired such as in Book-keeping or fired as a bank teller which requires BOTH precision AND accuracy. Job employers are not like baseball where they must use a 3 strike rule. This brings me to my analysis based off of life experiences and medical fact. In higher education, disability accommodations and tutoring should be REQUIRED for EVERY HIGHER and LOWER level courses. Sometimes "passing" is not enough. If dyslexic students barely passes, struggles, and get poor grades, while they may pass the college, their employer may not give new graduates enough time to adapt on the job. While "struggling" is a sign of commitment it can also develop bad learning habits. The PROCESS WE dyslexics learn and master information is just as important. A real life example of why I disagree with "struggling" or "toughing" it out is in engineering nuclear submarines. In the world's recent engineering history, we had nuclear submarines that were created by engineers (high IQ population with higher rates of dyslexia) who "struggled/toughed" things out in college in poorer countries without accommodations. Many 2nd and 3rd world countries cannot and do not accommodate disabilities including dyslexia which effects 10% of the workforce! What happens is when these nations create nuclear submarines in history with dyslexic employees who hide their disability, designs had fail points which can be easily be fixed. What needs to be addressed is better PROCESS and methodologies to train a dyslexic student or employee because dyslexics usually have genius or near-genius IQs. Training dyslexic employees properly is a benefit to employers because of their out-of-the box thinking style.

I have a learning disability called Cognitive Dysfunction that has similar symptoms to what you descried, though its not as severe. I forget things, loose track of what I'm saying mid-sentence or loose count. I can't add passed 10 either without a calculator unless i can remember a certain pattern to it and need my fingers to count, and that made me very unpopular with my math teacher I had through most of high school. I could never finish my work on time and the class rule was whatever you don't finish is homework, and I had so much homework every single day I couldn't finish it all, and she just said I was lazy and gave me detention for it, despite the school's support staff knowing about it and trying to explain it to her, she never believed them, or the doctor's reports I gave her explaining my disability. I remember being in year 9 or 10 math, and feeling so ashamed of myself because of a comment she made (I don't THINK it was aimed at me specifically, but i had my head in my workbook so I couldn't tell) where she joked that anyone who needs their fingers to count needs to go back to kindergarten. I ended up getting the government's board of education to recognise my disability right before my final year 10 exams, despite the fact she refused to submit her report and opinion on my condition. I got special provisions for my exams and ended up acing them, including math and this year i graduated from university.

In elementary, middle school, I used to get yelled at by my teachers saying "this is ridiculous." You are a grown lady. My elementary teacher said, "you won't pass 6th grade, middle school, and high school nobody will accept you." It was hard and depressing I wanted to take my own life I felt I was the only one, will I even have a business, or be good at math which is important, or your future? I also overthink a lot of what was going to happen to me.

I have a auditory and visual processing disorder and a LD for short term memory and sequential memory recall. You must advocate yourself in higher education. I just got my doctorates in educational leadership with a 4.0 which took me three years and prior my masters in education with a 3.9 gpa which took me one year. I barely got a 3.0 for my bachelors which took over eight years. Classes get easier when you’re able to take courses that you’re actually interested in and want to pursue. Just do NOT let anyone ever make you second guess yourself. You process information differently than the rest of the world which which gives you skills and perspectives that are so so valuable. If professors don’t know how to present information to you in a way that’s accessible to how you learn, it’s their own failure as an educator to implement UDL or universal design for learning. It’s not because you lack ANYTHING. Figure out how you learn best, apply it and capitalize off those skills.

I changed 5 answers which made me get a 70 which made me fail. Although my advisor told me I need to test in a room by myself, I can’t until I have my forms filled out. In order to do that, I have to have an assessment part 2 completed..... the doctor can’t do that the same week. I have 4 exams

actually start out with what is in demand in the labor market for example stem, i.t. medical, or you can go into a military as well or into the trades learn a get a 2 year degree at a trade school or local community college. You can get tested to see what your learning disability is in which in the you tube video a memory disorder is a common problem as to adhd ect.

Step 1 get your i.q. test then look up major by i.q. which will point you in a good start position. Nothing wrong with going to college or trade school but they are in business to make money so do not just think going to school for 2,4,6 years is going to get you a high paying job right off the bat either work go to school part time first then as time goes on you can spend more time each semester taking more classes if you just dip your toe in the water as first inintll you find out what you want to do for a living along with not getting into debt with student loans that you can't pay off which you will end up in a even biger hole then your where befor going to school.

She was so great and confedent , and a lot of people are so stuck on making great grades that they forget about other people that have to learn in differant ways to make things better for themselves , in their lives too . I hope disabilities advocate go threwout society and make other people like other students , business people responsible with not discussing the difference ways people learn because that is why they created disabilities learning to , so a person can learn at whatever difacult subject he or she has and not be known to other people who already have the grades to protect themselves from people who have use techniques so other people that have so much of an advantage that they don't have to worry if they get short changed by any and everyone who does not know their struggles . Their are people that prey on certain people and certain employee's or other learnings should not let other people devuldge the kinds of disabilty learnings . And only disability trained people are able to give the best advice and they are some of the greatest people ever exspecailly if the learning is constantly enterfering with so much of everything or everyday life ; but if you just try and stay as focused as possible . Learning differences does start to happen for a better but just trust professional that teach , or tutor you and other advocates that are specialized in these kinds of learning . They make all the difference in the world and so do student like her too . I too have been a learning student of with disability learners for 8 plus years and it's a ongoing struggle but I just say to my self with any and every struggle . I CAN read it better , count it better and things start to happen and maybe not as quick or all the subject everyone is able to do , or learn . I repeated the same students for 8 years and still study but a progress is what we as students just have to be do proud 8f others student that do things like what she spoke and she is studing medical too . That is beautiful accomplishment . I applaud her with so much greatness and I know she is gonna be a great health care professional too . I love her strength to glide her speech like great professional . Thank you for supporting students that struggle with the learning disabilities that defeat us in ways imaginable but as long as we have professionals that support us like the presenter , the channel and of acourse the disability teachers , tutor , and assistants that give of certain learning tools to read , write and count like everyone else . Again I applaud her speaking what's going on with some of us and how everyone is differant but she told them like the other professional and this is great videos for struggling disabiltly learners to watch and feel her courage too .

Crystal Zamora Please, don’t give up. I have struggled with the results from traumatic brain injury 20 years ago. I have almost completed my master degree in Professional Counseling and Expressive Art Therapy. Where ever you check into going... speak with their Disability Resource Center or Coordinator to discuss your options and how they can help you accomplish your goals. You can do this!

I have auditory processing disorder. I found out at the age of 25 after graduating college... It's been a struggle. Now, I am trying to take the GRE, another difficulty. I know it's rare, but could anyone relate? Please let me know any strategies in life you use. Thank you
@CathieZimmerman
@CathieZimmerman 6 лет назад
Lady Neek yes! I had a traumatic brain injury in the military that damaged my left temporal lobe. That’s where we process auditory stuff. I would contact the disability resource center or representative at the college you just graduated from (Nearly all colleges are required to have this.) and ask them if they have any resources or groups that meet to study for the GRE. Being Alumni, they would likely be excited about helping you to further your education! They would definitely know where to point you in the right direction. :)

@Lady Neek Hi. I know you posted this a year ago, but I can’t help but reply. I also have APD due to a TBI as a kid. Due to this, class would be a waste considering it’s harder for me to learn from hearing a professor give a lecture. So in high school, I literally just sat in class bored out of mind and not being able to grasp anything the teacher was saying. Each night, I would go home and teach myself everything by reading and writing. You can tell me anything orally and I won’t learn or grasp it. Lecture and educational videos are just as bad as hearing a teacher teach. I have to be able to read it in order to learn.

i, like all of you have a LD. it’s taken me 3 years to get an AA. Please, if you have gotten accommodations has it genuinely helped u? would u like more support? what would that support look like, the crazier ideas the better!! These comments have opened my eyes & shown me it takes us almost twice as long to get a bachelors degree. i see im not the only one who has been taken away financial aid bc i can’t meet their academic requirements. your comments prove that this education doesn’t take into consideration our background. I would say this should be more of an incentive for a lot more & out of the box accommodations. students like all of us are fighting huge statistics. A lot of us enter college & colleges don’t make an effort to retain students like us. it doesn’t surprise me a lot of y’all don’t seek accommodations embarrassment, not enough support, stigma, and ignorance over this topic from others shies us away. i have a huge list of suggestion but if I were to voice these i wouldn’t be taken seriously, but this only shows how much more support we need (those of that want it). they are so out of the box that I have to consider my peers whether my suggestions are too much of an advantage when it’s clearly taking us almost TWICE as long to graduate. so ridiculous since we’re already on an uneven Plainfield. The process for requesting accommodations is not good either. we have suggestions, are colleges willing to learn and act? don’t just pride urself in being inclusive- ask us how u can be proactive for us. more people like us graduating benefits colleges after all. Keep fighting everyone! you are seen & you are heard. don’t let comments, education and learning disabilities define your self-worth. don’t let this stop you from valuing life, been there. I can also relate to teachers professors and family members mocking me for my challenges and completely doubt i’ll graduate. remember you’re fighting things greater than you, a system that’s not catered for us folks with learning disabilities. wishing y’all nothing but success and that your doubters eat their words!! blessings

Sarah K - that’s the problem. It’s not like getting your oil changed, car diagnosed, but it should be. I suggest getting tested through the Dept. Of Vocational Rehabilitation and Training. Get them to pay for all you can. But get tested so you have a base line of your strengths and weaknesses. Then access how long it will take you to catch up. Eventually, find strengths, work on your weaknesses, and make these work 10 years into the future.

Refer to the office within the educational institution that you attend and ask if they have accommodations for students with learning disabilities. Specify the type of help you need and see what they can offer. Medically, I don't know if their is any treatment to improve or suppress the severity of the learning disability.

is not that we have studying problem is the fact that our minds refuse to study, the way I study for exams is first relax, dont over think, dont set yourself as failure and most importantly have confidence in yourself since we have learning disability as a single person we need to trick the mind how we study anything and the way I study is 10 minutes studying and 5 minute break, the reason of doing this is because our mind needs an reward system which the teacher had taught us for many years in this so called ''special class'' so I hope this method help you, Life is only getting more expensive not less. -PricePalm

The way I see it everybody has a disability of some kind. Learning and education shouldn't be standard or standardized no individual is created equal in the mind or in the body. We are not a product or an item on a assembly-line. Education and learning should be as an individual thing not in a mass production thing. Just saying.
