If you explore the "wtf ever you want" school of music theory, that you will eventually want to figure out a way to explain what you're doing and a system to teach others to play like you. When you reach this point, you will think it through, realize that you are about to revolutionize music theory....then after doing so, realize that you have just reinvented conventional music theory. Exactly the way it has been since Johann Sebastian Bach. At least, that was my experience. Then you realize that you should just learn music theory in a humble way. To quote some comedian I hear in the 80's, " You are a unique individual....just like EVERYONE ELSE!".

whenever someone asks about how to get inspiration for writing music, I usually go with the idea of "the spirit of play" -- The idea of play is deeply connected with discovery and creativity. You play around on the keyboard or bass or whatever and however to puzzle things out and discover things that fit what you are trying to do. Knowledge and expertise makes this easier. Eventually you stumble across something that suits your fancy, and off you go. you can use very simple materials, and slowly twist them to into shape.

On the subject of releasing unfinished music to the public. One successful producer that I follow has put into perspective what a really bad idea that is. The problem that can result is, that you never finish the music. The reason is mental, and thus somewhat complicated, but basically you get mental satisfaction from the feedback you get from releasing a piece of music - the craving of that satisfaction will help you finish the music; unless you release it before it's done and tap into that dopamine before it's really time. So unless you have really amazing discipline already about finishing your music, it's better not to release tracks until they are in a completed form.

My blog philosophy of sound as music meditation ecoechoinvasives.blogspot.com - and so ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dYcGICipoBs.html the secret of sound is now official! However quantum mechanics allows this system to be a superposition of states, we can be in 0 and the 1 state at the same time....it may react with the rest of the Universe and become unstable and it's going to lose the superposition of states that is in....I'm going to be in one of the two states I was in and that's it. And that's called decoherence so it's very difficult to stabilize those superposition of states. It's even more difficult when you have many qubits ....you have more interactions and less stability and more chances of decoherence. In quantum computers, to stabilize those qubits, what people do, they need to cool those qubits at cryogenic temperatures, these are very very low temperatures, near absolute zero. That requires a massive amount of energy and power and cooling system around these quantum computing chip. Our invention or our technology is saying, "We do not need quantum object to create superposition of states. And we found a system that does that, and it's based on a phononic structure that basically supports sound waves instead of electronic waves or quantum waves. And what happens, so we do not need a quantum system, so we don't have the problem of quantum decoherence. So we can avoid that drawback, by working with a quantum analog and our systems are acoustic quantum analogs of qubits. We call them Phi-Bits. So they exhibit the same capabilities of having superposition of states but they do not have the drawback of decoherence. They are stable. The Tech Foundation funds research that will not be funded by traditional federal sources, for instances, so we had to demonstrate that places like the National Science Foundation would not fund the research because it's too out there, out of the paradigm, it's too revolutionary for them to fund....we have three years of research, we have to demonstrates a set of phi-bits, to operate a well-known quantum algorithm...so have a tabletop system operating....Reciprocity of fundamental frequency transmission coefficient (FFTC) is now investigated. Since the geometry is symmetric with respect to its center at f from A to B with two opposite values of v is equivalent to comparing FFTCs from A to B and B to A at f with a single value of v.

With regard to the theory question, I think some of the most interesting musical ideas can come from disregarding typical music theory ideas. You see this a lot in hip-hop as well as many experimental genres.

One thought I want to add about the first question: power chords can also have "implied harmony", so if for example somebody plays | D5 A5 | B5 | G5 A5 | D5 , your brain sort of "fills in" the 3rds because this harmonic movement is so strong throughout music history that we instinctually know that these chords will (probably) be implying Dmajor, Amajor, Bminor, Gmaj, A major, D major, even though there are no 3rds. So yes, I do think the harmonic series has some relevance, but I think it's also implied harmony that people sometimes hear. We just "know" (even if we don't know music theory), because we've heard these kinds of cadences and stuff so many times.

I think you have keep the "do whatever you what" sentiment in mind at all times. It's like the musical equivalent of "The only thing I can be perfectly sure about, is that there is nothing I can be perfectly sure about" it's about humility, no matter how much you know about music a baby would do things to the instrument you could have never dreamed about

Hey Adam. Short-ish question: What is your take on bass parts that pretty much double the guitar part, only an octave lower? This style is often used in metal genres and the like and I wonder if using the bassist as a "human suboctaver" is really the best way to write the bass part for those genres, or just lazy part writing.
@thegreatgambeeno
@thegreatgambeeno 6 лет назад
Tomasz Mazurek depends on the part. If we're playing a chuggy riff or a very powerful "chorus" hook type riff, doubling the guitar lends power to that part. For other riffs where there is space to fill, the bassist can find something to move between the parts of the riff that are there. Or maybe the melody is very busy and the bass sounds better locked into the drum pattern playing roots. One thing that helped me was a producer talking about how the bass player in a band was playing this super fancy bass lick behind a regular riff for a chorus, and it just killed the vocal. It sounded like a mash of parts, not a chorus. Likewise, in the bridge after the chorus, the bassist was just playing roots and sustaining them while everyone else was following an 8th note pulsing rhythm to build back to the verse. It took away the drive and push of the part, it sounded lame. It's all about context, intent, and judgement. Do what's best for the song. That cool riff may have taken 2 hours to nail, but if it makes the song sound off or takes away from the energy, maybe not worth it.

I am a bit ashamed to admit, I am a musician who is a bit of an ignorant anomaly; I can neither read music nor audiate musical pieces. Everything I have learned has been by ear. Compound this with the fact I am a left handed musician that cannot play left hand instruments (for example, I play a right hand guitar flipped reverse). A lot of people take issue with not being able to follow along easily when jamming in a practice session. Have you encountered many musicians who deal with this situation? At any rate, I have learned a lot from your channel in the last two weeks, so much has 'clicked' with me watching your explanations on all things music, though most music theory has just completely gone over my head prior. Thank you for this. You are greatly appreciated.

@JamieClark
@JamieClark 6 лет назад
Maybe don’t learn guitar sheet music, but at least start with basic rhythm notation and single note melodies, like a lead sheet. Then learn chord names (and associate them with chords you already know, just put labels on them) and learn to play from a chart. Even if you don’t play from charts in ensembles, being able to think in a more structured way like that will allow you to understand the group. You hear them playing changes or whatever, and you could imagine what the structure of the (invisible) chart would be, if someone notated your jam session. While you’re doing this, at least learn to play with a metronome. I have played with quite a few amateurs who did not have predictable rhythm. They claimed it was free and flowing, but I think they just didn’t have the capability. It’s not a talent, it’s a skill. Most people learn as kids marching around a preschool classroom (look up Eurithmics to see what I mean) but it can be learned later by kids who got “left behind”. Bottom line, metronome, rhythm, rhythm notation, and chord progressions. This is all you need in order to play in groups.

Hello Adam, here's one for your next Q+A: What are your thoughts on musical dilletantism? I learned the piano but am not the most skilled musician myself and play in several groups with people having no musical background at all. I enjoy it and sometimes I think, that the dilletantism brings some fresh flavors into the music. On the other hand it can be frustrating to play with non-musicians because you can't communicate musical concepts as easily as with "real" musicians. Any thoughs on this? Have you played with musical dilletants?

With regards to learning music you don't dig - i find that i probably don't like it because I'm not the target audience. But if i can understand the culture the music speaks to, and the social context it belongs in. Eg. Currently playing a gig where i have to play several hours of modern country music a week. Before checking it out more thoroughly i hated this stuff, but i kinda enjoy it now because i realise that at it's core its speaking about a simple life where the most important things are family, community, having a good time and looking out for each other. Whilst it's not targeted at Australian jazz musicians (me), i can recognize the meaning and value it would have to people in small town America in affirming and strengthening cultural values.

Adam, I have heard that Metallica's late bassist Cliff Burton, who significantly contributed to the first three and even the fourth of their albums, was classicly trained. I was wondering if you could watch some of his bass solos or listen to some instrumentals like Orion and Call of Ktulu and talk about where exactly his classical training and influence show up. Thanks btw I enjoyed the first question on power chords

This is actually related to a much older Q+A, but I just wanted you to see it: When that question was brought up about Pentatonix and their "performances" on RU-vid, my immediate thought was also Walk Off The Earth. I've watched a ton of their videos and it can be fun to listen to them, but their videos paint this pristine, perfect performance that is so at odds with their actual ability to perform, and so many people just fanboy/fangirl over them and fight back against people who talk about how fake their "performances" are. I went pretty deep into the rabbit hole one night, looking at live and "live" performances all across RU-vid. I found a concert of theirs, recorded by an audience member. During one song, you can actually hear the female vocalist (I don't know their names...) singing over a track of herself for about 2-3 seconds, before the out-of-key voice fades off, leaving only the "perfect" performance. After her line finished, she kind of slowly rolls her head back and looks at the ceiling, with this "daaaaaaammit" kind of expression on her face. I was just thrilled to finally have a video showcasing their falsehood, because any time someone brings up how their "performances" are faked, other commenters go nuts about how "perfect" they are live and how wrong it is to question them. I've never used it as ammo against their fans, because winning internet arguments isn't really important. But yeah, I know all-too-well where you're coming from.

Do people often call you arrogant? It happens to me a lot when I get asked of music. It happens that I really put a lot of effort in my playing and theory learning (I've been told I have a really decent level for an amateur musician playing in jazz bands with music students), and I try to teach my other musician friends about it, I mostly do it to motivate them to play more and help them "improve" (I guess you could see theory and technique as tools, better tools, generally better looking furniture, but who knows, maybe the point of the beauty of a particular desk is to have a relic look, same with music), but all I seem to do is scaring them. How do you manage to teach music well?

Adam, I so appreciate your channel. Your contribution to the world is a good one, I respect your obvious dedication to doing the hard work, and no matter the subject you always go above and beyond to "do it justice", even if the subject is normally considered trivial or silly, you mine depth out of places that most would probably not expect there to be much to get. Very awesome stuff always. Anyways, I am just starting to grow my guitar teaching business, and I would love your advice, possibly on your next Q and A. What do you think the best way to proceed is? I have 6 students that I am meeting with in person every week, and I want to do online lessons too, but I wonder whether or not I should try to build up my local students first before branching out digitally, or if the potential for growth of online lessons is so much better that I should get running on that before trying to get too many more people locally slotted into the later after school type of time slots? I'd prefer to grow to the point where I can do music teaching and production/content creation for RU-vid full time instead of my current non music job, during the daytime hours instead of depriving my family of my time and attention at night. It's a very interesting challenge to try to balance work and family life when trying to launch a new business. Any thoughts?

The Twitch question!!!!!! I totally do my songwriting directly on Twitch, and while it doesn't bring me as many views as I have when I stream harp and singing requests, it's definitely extremely rewarding for me to sit there and do that work on a consistent basis. I'd say to any musician: give it a go. There's just nothing to lose really and people enjoy seeing the process. If you need some help with the streaming part, make sure to hit me up! ;) Also, as a side note, I'm not affraid of getting my music stolen and I think it's really outdated to fear that in 2017. In the sad eventuality that would happen, I would actually not give a heck about it because in the end I'm the one who owns the skill and that's my true value. I'll make a thousand other better songs anyway.

Whenever people say, "f*ck Theory! forget the rules; just do whatever you want," I think it's because _Music Theory is not _*_really_*_ any kind of Theory_ and even more importantly, _it's not even _*_rules_* . It's just _experience_ collected and condensed over the centuries. _It's just a collection of very-useful, but take-it-or-leave-it, wisdom_ . For example, an Authentic Cadence produces a sensation of finality. Does that mean that you have an obligation to end your music with an authentic cadence? Despite what the Theory class you're taking may say, no, of course not! That's just an example of a ... well, "a common practice" within the _Common Practice_ that has a potentially useful effect. Now, on the other hand, is it worthwhile to spend some time to learn and fully understand these tidbits of collective wisdom? Yes, absolutely! But *_it's not a rule_* at all; it's just a formula with a well-known effect, and a fairly-predictable and often useful effect. That's all!

I listen to all genres (no joke; my current music collection spans across all genres and includes around 100k songs, all of which are ontologically categorized). I kind of have to; I'm a composer. But just to be perfectly honest; I personally believe that there is no such thing as a genre that I don't like. So far I always used the following wisdom to guide me: "if you don't like a music genre you just haven't listened to the right songs from the genre so keep looking". Thus far I haven't come across a music genre that I genuinely hated (yes, not even Polka). I am also not a fan of live streaming how I write and produce my music. It's really boring and I don't like showing people my secret weapons LOL.

Latest Apartment Session brought up a question: do you think it's relevant for modern bass player to know their way around a keyboard so they can play synth bass parts? What about basic understanding of sound design with synths?
@simongunkel7457
@simongunkel7457 6 лет назад
Being able to at least do basic keyboard stuff is always helpful for composing at least and a lof of how you feel music does translate. Understanding sound design is going to help you understand a lot about recording music and even composition (the adding harmonics part in the video is a case in point). There are also ways to incorporate synth parts into a bass rig (i.e. you could use an eurorack set up in your FX loop and then utilize a variety of modules to affect your sound).

Hey Adam, we had a discussion in my composition class about misappropriation of musical styles. My professor told us that using instruments in our compositions from cultures that we don't belong to would be "problematic". I don't agree with the idea of cultural appropriation as a whole, but especially not when it comes to artistic expression. I feel like when you put an artistic work out there it's open to anyone to take influence from. Do you think any style or instrument belongs to a singular culture shouldn't be used by others?

Ayo Adam, whenever I play with people, I often end up focusing on my own playing way too much and end up not listening to how the whole band sounds, and I feel like it hinders me from getting in the groove and playing off the other musicians. It stems from a place of wanting the song to sound good, of course, thus my interest in my own part, but sometimes I get so focused it essentially feels like the band ends up just being a backing track for me in my head. Any advice or comments? Love your shit, keep doing the thing.

Hi Adam. Long time listener, first time caller. Love your work and dedication. When I told a teacher that I have stronger preference for bass music, thinking it's related to my somewhat damaged hearing, he responded how that's expected behavior - for pshychos. Can you discuss in your next Q&A a correlation of bass sound preference with antisocial and borderline personalities? I am aware of this theory, and I hope it is a one-way correlation. What's your take on it, considering your experience among musicians - are bass players and drummers crazier than the rest? Thanks for allowing me (and "us", youbitoo community) to pick your brains, cheers.

Question for your next Q+A: I've a hypothesis about why people like certain types of music. I hold that the factors which determine whether a person will like a type of music include the music's merit (in harmony, rhythm, etc.), how frequently the individual has been exposed to the music, and the individual's Openness to Experience (from the Five-Factor Model of Personality). My argument for the importance of exposure frequency is that r e p i t i t i o n l e g i t i m i z e s, and more acutely in childhood, potentially. The neuroplasticity of the young mind may produce a bias in future musical preferences based off the music one is exposed to in youth. Regarding Openness to Experience, my argument is thus: all music can trigger emotions, depending--largely, I suspect--on the harmonies and lyrics, and lesser so on rhythm and instrumentation. Preference, then, depends on the individual's Openness, on their ability to endure diverse humours and their bravery to weather the feelings produced by a type of music, be it sadness, anger, fear, or the many inexpressible affects produced by jazz, impressionist classical, et al. From your position of expertise and experience, how do you judge these claims?

I found my ears drawn to trap beats recently, even though I don't like the context they're in, and out of frustration brought on by the samey-ness of their use and structure, I decided to try using 'em in my own music except on samples of real drums instead of the same ol' TR-808.

Q&A: Hello Adam, I would like to know your opinion on finding appropriate pieces in terms of difficulty. How long should it take for me to learn a specific piece that is at the right level of my current abilities? For instance, if it takes me more than 3 or 4 weeks to learn a piece that is about 5 minutes long, should I consider learning something easier and come back to it later? Is there even a rule of thumb? Thanks , love your vids!

For the next Q&A: Hey Adam, it seems that music created in an orchestral sense has declined dramatically in popularity over the course of recent centuries, now being used mainly as descriptive music for film and television. Aside from this, would you say there is much of a demand for this type of music today? If not, why do you think that is the case?

Hey Adam (love the channel by the way), have a bit of a problem in which I’m going to college for food science but I also REALLY want to do music (specifically jazz) as well. I have an incredible passion for both and I want to pursue both to their fullest potential, but I also feel like there are not enough hours in a day to do gigs and be a fully fledged musician while also being a scientist. I will always keep music as a huge part of my life but I would like some advice as to what I could do in college to pursue music to its fullest while also pursuing science. Should I double major or minor? Should I just try to get better at it myself? Im really confused and would love some advice. Thanks!

Hey Adam, I've got a question. I'm certain that music is going to play a large part in my career. However, at the age of 15, I'm not exactly sure where to start other than trying to make or join a band in a genre I enjoy. For the next Q&A: I find that in a lot of progressive and technical genres of music, the lyricism tends to be quite uninspired and simplistic. They never match the levels of technicality that the instruments have going on with heavy usage of multisyllabics and wordplay for example. A good example of this lack of lyrical skill would be the tendency of many Djent bands just mushing together some random sequence of fancy-sounding words that might sound cool on a surface level, but as soon as you look at it with more than a cursory glance it means pretty much nothing. Do you think there's a logical reason for this besides just being lazy, and can you recommend any bands that subvert this trend?
@simongunkel7457
@simongunkel7457 6 лет назад
I think there is a logical reason, based on a general idea of art. You start with a blank page and then you start making decisions on some things. As you add to this your decisions become more restricted based on the decisions you made before. In this case if you make a lot of musical decisions before you write lyrics, you end up in a situation where you have very tight constraints on the lyrics, which makes it really hard to come up with something that could stand on its own as poetry. On the other hand if you start with lyrics, you will end up limiting the music as you now have a sense of meter in the writing for instance. But the same also is true for pure instrumental music, where you might start out with harmony and that restricts melodic ideas somewhat or vice versa. Art is a process in which you start with total freedom and then successively eliminate it.
