There aren‘t 2 past tenses, there are three. And taking 2 words is too easy. The Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz (yes, that word really was used in official documents, it‘s the name of a former law) mashed up 7 words, and ‚umfahren‘ means both ‚drive around‘ and ‚hit while driving‘, depending on how you pronounce it. But at least, we do not have 43 ways of pronouncing ‚gh‘ 😛

But forget about the Plusquamperfekt. In many contexts you simply don't use that, so I assume it's not even taught. But now you know. In fact it's a bit like the bible, you would have been better off if I did not tell you about it. Now you will wonder about the edge cases where it would sound slightly more natural to use it. But an average your better off just ignoring it. Like misuse will raise weirdness by 20% while not using it will only raise weirdness by 1%. Also good applications are very easily avoided. It's legacy leftover in the language that probably made more sense 200 years ago.
@Taliesin2

Actually German doesn't have Imperfekt but Präteritum... Most romance languages have imperfect, but the German Präteritum doesn't have to have the imperfective aspect.

Some stuff is wrong though, v is not always f, for example. Only in words/word particles of Germanic origin, like der Vogel or the prefix ver- (like in verboten, vergessen, etc.), in words of Latin/Romance origin it's v like in English, e.g. der Ventilator (fan, in medical jargon also a device that pushes air into someones lungs), die Vase (vase like in English). Also I can't think of a word where S is pronounced "Sh". Maybe in a loan word. The other part is true, though, it can be pronounced like English S or Z. This one gets a bit more complicated as there are some rules around it which is the reason why we have "s", "ss" and "ß" (the last one is not a B, but an S, its use is to make the vowel before it "long", where "ss" makes it "short. Long and short are not totally accurate here, because it can also change the vowel sound a little bit, but that is how we learn it in elementary school). Also Y is called Ypsilon, but is pronounced "ee" or "ü" (can't write that last one in English, sorry). In Ypsilon the Y is pronounced Ü. Some people always pronounce it Ü, but in spoken German you will hear both. It's a rare letter, though, anyways, mostly used in Greek words, like Xylophon or Dystopie (both "ü"), or in nicknames like Willy (where it's "ee", like you would say it in English). Sorry for the pedantry, I am German after all.

My partner spent 7 years in Germany, after which he came back to our home country speaking flawless English and nothing beyond a few words in German. That's the first time I heard of that 20-second rule referenced here. Germans want to see you struggle in their language for a bit but after 20 seconds they take pity on you or are frustrated at hearing their own language so badly butchered, and switch to English.

There is hardly anything more German than being impatient and finding it exhausting to talk to someone in bad German. I say that as a German. I always feel overwhelmed when someone who doesn't speak German well wants to talk to me. Most of the time these are situations in which this person needs help in some way, asks for directions, etc. And it's much more efficient in terms of time if you have the conversation in another language. Also, I never know whether and how I should correct someone's pronunciation or grammar in German. On the one hand, I don't want to come across as rude, but on the other hand, the person also wants to learn German. That's a fine line.

Top tip for learning German - fall in love with a German speaker. It provides excellent motivation, and you can pick up so much about German by translating backwards their Denglisch! The using the present tense to talk about the future, nobody needed to teach me that in a classroom. Caveat - might not work so well if their English is too good. So you've got to pick carefully. Downsides - the bilingual wedding invitations look very crowded, and you definitely need to avoid mentioning gifts!

Great! XD Portuguese can be very challenging, I would put in the same group of difficult languages that includes German. I could mention many examples, as the different sets of conjugations depending to the ending of each REGULAR verb (common in Romance languages) and the last language reform that make it more difficult to learn (at least I'm from the older school), but I give here two simple and easy examples, about letter pronunciations: - There are 5 letters or combinations with S sound: S (not between vowels), SS (between vowels), C (when before E and I), Ç, and SC. - X can have 5 sounds: CS, S, Z, SH, not pronounced (when before a C), and I excluded the SS because it wouldn't make sense without more explanations. So, Xena, the Warriors Princess, was known in Brazil as "Sheyna" - without the "e" sound from "y". 🙃
