So, to know when it's done do you wait for the fire coming from the hole to almost burn out?

Use 100 percent cotton. I like to use cotton pillow cases 3x3 squares. I use an altoids can with a small hole in the lid. Using a alcohol stove I allow to cook until no smoke can be seen from the lid.
