A couple weeks ago I bought a Honda Rebel 300 so my girlfriend could learn to ride motorcycles, and today is her first day on the bike! I showed her all the bike's controls, taught her the basics of riding a motorcycle, and then she hopped on the Rebel and gave it a shot!
To teach her how to ride a motorcycle for the first time, we practiced walking with the bike to get a feel for it and then did some work on learning where the friction zone/engagement point of the clutch is. We were only out for about 40 minutes and she was already able to get the Rebel 300 rolling!
She's taken my Honda Grom around the parking lot in first gear a couple times before, but this was her first time learning to ride a full sized motorcycle, and I think she CRUSHED IT!! For a beginner rider I was super impressed with how quickly she learned, even while being intimidated her first time on a bike just like we all were when we first learned to ride!
This little Rebel 300 is honestly the PERFECT first motorcycle for her and I can't wait to watch her progress as we get to go out and practice more!

Riding bikes for the first time is terrifying! Compared to a car it's louder, there's more vibration, cars can't fall over.... you're doing great Nina! Keep it up, it'll get easy once you have muscle memory 👍

A rider must believe that in traffic, you are invisible. No one can see you. You must anticipate every dumb move that any driver may make, and be prepared with plan A, and plan B. The only way to stay alive is to ride smart and totally alert. Even on an open road, you must be prepared for critters, crap on the road, etc. New riders should ride only in a gaggle, or group with experienced riders, until they are experienced enough to ride solo. Piloting a motorcycle is a ballet of balance, feel, action, reaction, anticipation, reservation, confidence, and above all else, wisdom to not do something stupid....because when you get confident, you get stupid.....and that can cost you your life. I've been riding for 60 yrs now, and I refuse to allow myself to be so confident, I get dead....It takes days to learn to ride....it takes years to learn to stay alive. Your girl is smart. she must learn at her own pace. Plus she's cute, and funny, and wants to please you....baby steps..she will not be riding the Dragon's Tail with you this year, or the next..but you appear to be patient..that will keep her alive.

Same here. Age 65 and just took my MSF course a couple of weeks back (20 days to be precise.) That was originally with the intention of getting licensed to ride a Vespa, but after learning the manual shifting, I'm now gunjy to consider a Honda Rebel as well. So I'll be building my skill set and confidence on the scooter and when I'm ready, I'll joing my Harley riding son with my own cruiser. At this point , Sonny Boy is riding with me. We do look the odd lot--a 1200 Sportster along a Vespa GTS 300. lol

Nina all the feelings and emotions that you were going through were the same exact emotions that I’ve gone through so don’t let that hold you back. I’m still quite new to riding and get nervous every time I get on the bike and that’s a good thing because I think it keeps you alert. I’m looking forward to seeing day two of you learning to ride. If I may suggest which I’m sure you already know by now, please wear boots in case you drop the bike and it falls on you, you don’t want your feet to get smash/crunched. My first time on the bike just like what you did today, I came to a stop in the parking lot and forgot to put my feet down and down I went with the motorcycle on top of me and I was wearing tennis shoes. From that day forward every time I got on the bike to practice I always slipped my boots on. Good luck!

Good for you. My wife is over 60 and she learned to ride on her Monkey. She was riding around the parking lot the first day. She passed her test on the first try she has a Rebel 500 now also. She actually likes the Rebel better because the seat height is lower than the Monkey. We wanted to get the same bike for her and me. That is why we got two 500s. It's perfect for her to learn on and still enough bike for me. Best of luck to you.

@@womanhoodisnotacostume7648 I highly recommend the Honda Rebel 500. Any less cc and in a month or so you’ll wish you had the 500. They make the 1100 too, but the tank is a bit wider, which pushes your legs out a bit, and for me, made my feet reach a bit too much for comfort.

Dude … you are a good instructor BUT what stuck out for me was how amazing you are with her and managing her feelings. There is a lot of machismo around bikes and I swear you are the first person that I ever saw that took a moment, explored the feelings of a new rider, made them ok to manifest and setting the noobs mind right before they start moving. I don’t know if you are but you will be an amazing dad. THIS is what I love the most about bikes … drivers make cars great, bikes hold up the rider not the other way around.

Hey thanks for making this video. I am 52 years old and went through the rider course last year. I was super excited about riding for the first time and loved the course. I watched 2 people crash the bike ( they were both ok) and it seemed to happen out of nowhere. And that was just in a parking lot going pretty slow. You’re right. A healthy amount of fear is a good thing.

It's a good video, your instruction is good as is your patience and Nina is making progress. I would respectfully suggest that she should be wearing more protection - leather gloves as a minimum and preferably strong boots and jeans. This might sound kinda stuffy but I speak from the perspective of 25 years as a motorcycle instructor. What you really don't want is for her to have a minor fall when she's a novice which causes her to loose skin - that's the kind of thing that will put her off . . . . Looking forward to seeing her enjoying the Rebel on the road, though - i'm sure she'll be good :-).

hey nina- nobody thinks you’re stupid. i promise. everybody started like this (my first time on a motorcycle was 10x more catastrophic). asking questions and intentionally learning is infinitely better than rawdogging it. there’s a lot of different processes and variations when it comes to riding. also i’ll be honest, i don’t even know where neutral is half the time. i learned to ride on a motorcycle with a broken gear indicator and i couldn’t get it started for the life of me at time because i couldn’t find neutral. hope you’re enjoying riding ❤

I’m so glad to see this video. I just got my license yesterday and I felt exactly the same way you did. I also wanted a nap and sushi and wine after 2 hours, except I couldn’t. I wish I had gotten on a motorcycle before so it would have been easier on me. It was mentally and emotionally exhausting. I got on a bike for the first time on Saturday and took the test on Sunday. The hardest thing: making a U turn (can’t put your foot down) and a sharp left on slow sleep, if you got that then you can do anything, in my opinion. Believe me girl, you will do great and I’m glad to see such a relatable video. Relax and enjoy the ride. At the end I was able to pass. I had great coach. And also my husband was graceful supporting me and encouraging me. When you get the gist of it you will feel so wonderful. I wish success and joy for you. My only advice, get out of your head if you stress, relax, believe in yourself, and turn your head, look at where you want to go.

Honestly videos like this are needed. I know I'm so late to the party but proud of her for trying. I'm a 30 year old man who wants to learn how to ride and I have the same fear 👌🏻. Thanks guys

Love this, getting ready to teach my son! Bikes were huge in my life and youth, at 18 he has been bitten by the bug. (Finally). I’m trying to remember the different steps from the motorcycle safety course that I took back in 1989.

Both of you were amazing! I just signed up to take a motorcycle riding course and plan to buy the exact bike you were just riding (ish) LOL I learned a lot from both of you. I've got 'butterflies' already and I can't wait to get on a bike. Thanks for that! LOL again!

Great job and patience, I’m not sure I could be that cool, if she could ride a grom well, then I’d have no patience, I’d be like ride around a bit!! To be fair my dad bought me a 2 stroke dirt bike and he showed me everything and he went inside, so did what he did and that’s it! And a 125 two stroke is unbelievably powerful! Today I’m a bit insane on one!!! Too much fun!!! Edit grom only three times, then ya great job with instructions!!!

This was a great video. I have always wanted to ride and everything she was saying is what I would be feeling too. I'm looking for MSF classes in my area to take. The comment about people saying how dangerous it is. I agree, and that has made me hesitate for a long time but no more. Thank you both!

It’s still coming, don’t worry! Winter was suuuper cold and snowy this year, and she works 9-5 so it was always dark by the time she got off. It’s starting to warm up though so hoping to get her back out soon! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

You just Gained a sub! Thankyou so much for sharing your experience. Just like you said, this the exact kind of content we need more of. 100x thankyou!! My partner has been wanting to teach me and this video gave me the reassurance that no question or pace is too much or too small.

A trick to remember the location of the gears is turn your hand downwards so that your thumb points to the floor with your palm fully open. Then, visualize your thumb as the first gear and higher gears upwards from there. Neural falls in the big gap between your thumb and the index finger.

How is the power compared to a z400 or a duke 390? A lil less powerful id imagine? And the 650s or a Honda 500 would be 50 ish more percent power?

Don't know if it was right or not, but all videos like these seems extremely slow to me, and I think if it was me being taught like this, it would just increase my insecurities. *For comparison:* When I had my first lesson at a driving school, it was on a Honda Hornet 600cc and I knew about gears and clutching, front/back brake, although my last time on a bike was when I was a teenager 15+ years ago, and that was a 50cc. With that said, my instructor put me on the bike within the first 30 seconds and I was weaving cones within the first two minutes, *and then within the first 10 I had done:* - Cone weaving (bike length apart) - Slow ride on 40 cm wide line for 55 meters. Time had to be more than 15 seconds. - Fast ride on 40 cm wide line for 40 meters. Time had to be less than 5.5 seconds, and had to shift to 2nd and 3rd gear. - Fast ride in bike length wide lane for 40 meters. Time had to be less than 5.5 seconds, had to shift to 2nd at least, then come to a complete stop within 20 meters (think I did 4-5 meters max). - Fast ride in bike length wide lane for 40 meters. Time had to be less than 5.5 seconds, had to shift to 2nd at least, and swerve a cars width of 4 cones and swerve back into the lane again Got my full license in eight days from start to stop and had a total of 4x2 hour lessons of non-stop drills. Go. Go. GO. kinda thing. Already on my second lesson I had to drive the bike from an underground garage in the center of the city and go to the practice center outside of the city. It was however with the same teacher I have for my car license, so he knows I can handle traffic more than well in a car. Now I need to get myself a bike on my own as rental places won't rent to anyone with a license newer than 1 year, and I realize I still need a lot more practice to say that I am a confident and secure rider.

Oh my gosh. I got my endorsement a couple years ago and didn’t get a bike as soon as I’d like. Now I’m looking into a Honda Rebel 500. I need this guy to come out and help me get comfortable on a bike again!!!

I just picked up a new (to me) bike a few weeks ago after not riding for several years. Was also a big step up in size/weight from my last bike and I was a little nervous about riding it for the first time. It's just part of getting on a bike for the first time that's significantly different than what you've ridden before. No two bikes are the same so you psych yourself up thinking "what if I can't handle THIS bike."

This is a good video. Hoping to see more. I took my beginner motorcycle class several weeks ago and I now have my bike. All the confidence I gained in those 2 days is gone and I feel like a noob again. Will use these videos for practice. Thanks for doing this series.

My daughter is very short. We went to several dealerships to find bikes for her to try out. Honda rebel was a good fit. We tried 883 Harleys, lows and super lows 25 -28 inch seat height, also a good fit. But she hates harleys. Crotch Rockets? Forget about it, Not for short people.

It’s funny, my wife having hand control reach concerns on her Rebel 500 brought me to your channel when I watched you install those adjustable levers off of Amazon. Being able to adjust the clutch lever to have a natural reach totally made the learning experience better for both of us beginners.

Its the tiny things. Even for learning a manual car it is the smaller stuff that you have to get used to. How slow can I go in this gear, how do i move around in a parking lot, or is it break or clutch first.

Awesome vid, been wanting to teach my wife to ride. When we met she told me as a girl she wanted to ride motorcycle but life gets in the way. I want to help her, but I think this vid can help her more than I can by showing her that she is not alone in her interest and fear of learning to ride. Great job to you both. Love the vids and the rebel. Was looking to pick up a Grom or Rebel 300 for the wife (and Me) as my old '86 1100 Sportster with no signals and drag clutch and carb do not make a good beginner bike. I will stay tuned for more!

I'm thinking of buying a 500 because I'm looking for a commuter in washington to use on i5 and highway 2. I'm aware of not using it during the rainy and cold weather also. I have no previous experience but it sounds like the test nearby uses a rebel for practice anyway. I also considered the 1100 but my main concern would simply be, can i safely ride on a 500 on the windy 65mph i5? Loving your videos and thank you!

My husband bought us e-bikes and now I'm ready for a 300 but it's a small town and will be on the highway so I'm thinking I might need a 500 because the next town is 45 miles away and I go there alot. Thanks for keeping it REAL.

For me her trying to learn freaks me out so much easier for her to be on a 50cc full size bike. And yet i have seen grown men many of them loose control on a 50cc machine and yet the power is half or more less then a 300cc machine. Known a couple of men actually end up in the hospital.

Getting my first Honda 300 next week. Hubby was taking the motorcycle safety course last summer (it is now a requirement to pass that course before you can get your beginner bike license in Manitoba). HE got a bike last summer but it is just too tall and heavy for me. I can't wait to get out on my own on my own bike.

Burch you are a great teacher. Nina you have great questions. It kept feeling like you guys were reading my mind about things that I wanted to understand and see visually like that gear chart. This is the best beginner video I've seen, I'm so goddamn excited to take a class and get on a bike.

I fear ice on the road. I respect a 200hp motorcycle. The slightest error on your part will kill you. I think 600hp is the most I've unleashed on 2 wheels. It's not particularly fun but is really good for building your relationship with God!!!
