Really enjoyed this. He’s a very eloquent speaker and has definitely given me some things to think about

I understand his concept. It's going to take me some time to apply it. I'm learning on my own with no background in music other than listening. I know basic theory and Sam's advice helps me understand that it's okay to learn with my ears first then later I can figure out the theory behind what I'm trying to play. I'm slow starting to realize that my ears and fingers pick this stuff up quicker than the brain.

Very useful and fun! @15:00, I really appreciated how Sam stressed using the blues to practice and develop vocabulary.

I just ’stumbled’ onto your episode on Donna Lee. My guitar teacher keeps quoting this tune and I was not as familiar as I am now…thanks to your very clear forensic analysis; thanks very much and looking forward to other Great American Standards! As a guitarist what I’ve found is that many music students attempt to solo based on either a favorite artist, a jazz performance and/or a transcription of some classic jazz piece. What they don’t seem to do is play the melody to death just as the earlier jazz musicians had to do nightly, to earn a living. As soon as you grow weary of the melody you seek phrases to play over the changes and then you’re off.
