I've used music in many different ways to learn languages over the years. I've written song lyrics Japanese, French, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and I've learned to play songs that I liked. I've used various methods to learn the lyrics. However, I've never really polished these experiences into a method, like I usually do.
In this video, I want to open up the discussion with all of you and explore this technique and all its possibilities together! 😄

Music is an integral part of experiencing the language for me. Especially, rap music. I'm a huge hip-hop head. I have over 2000 rap songs in my Spotify playlist and I add new ones every day. I like experiencing rap from different countries and in different languages. I keep up-to-date with new releases in the US and abroad and I like rapping along to my favourite songs. The thing is that I used to rap myself. I have developed an ability to mimic flows and be able to rap almost anything no matter how fast or complex, it all just takes practice. I have rapped songs in many languages, some of which I don't even speak. I wrote my own rap song in 5 languages which I could send to you on FB. I can't say that I learn languages through rap music, but I definitely fall even more in love with the languages I'm learning by listening to highly complex and technical rap. I don't like the commercial stuff, I usually prefer the old -school, technical rap with complex rhyme schemes and wordplay and finding that in other languages is pretty cool. Also, since I like learning the full scope of a language, including slang and swear words, rap songs definitely help. They might also help with pronunciation because they resemble speech way better than singing. Anyway, I'm a rap nerd and a language nerd. I definitely bring both of those passions together on a daily basis.

Wow thanks for sharing this Leszek! It's really cool to read how passionate you are about rap music. I often think that this is one of the most beautiful things about languages as a hobby... they can become a VEHICLE that magnifies the experience of another passion entirely. It seems this is the case for you and rap music 🙂 do you think that the ability you developed to MIMIC flows in particular has helped you with mimicking speech in your foreign languages? I always loved doing impressions and accents while growing up, and I think that ability to mimic people was very helpful with learning new languages. I think in your case the emphasis on highly technical, complex and/or fast rap is very interesting! A theme here does seem to be that many people (myself included) don't LEARN so much through music but that it helps to connect with the language more deeply and even to explore yourself through the lenses (or rather, sounds) of that language and the people who created the music. Rap seems particularly interesting in this case with all of its wide-reaching influences. I like this discussion!

Love that ‘Nothing Arrived’ intro 😊 I also like to explore foreign language song in order to learn the language. Sometimes I find it easier to go through since I love music and still practicing my guitar skill but in the other hand, it’s hard to understand the real meaning behind those song particularly when the song was taken from poetry or something else but yeah still it’s a great experience to learn foreign language for me. Just found out your channel and I can tell you have a great passion in language and now you’re helping others to develop their language learning skill.. So glad to finally found you:)) Cheers!!

Amazing 😲. I am still struggling with guitar 🎸😞. I wanted to learn Language's like Korean and Chinese because I loved that songs. I wanted to learn French so I used to hear French songs which I loved. So for me songs and music played a important role in learning language.

I am a speech pathologist who works with very young children who are behind in language learning. Music is a HUGE tool in my toolbox. I explain it to parents like this: Children need to hear words many times before they can learn them. However if I just say "Ball""Ball""Ball""Ball""Ball"... it's boring and they'll tune me out after awhile, but if I sing "Ball""Ball""Ball", "Throw the ball" to the Beach Boys Barbra Ann, it's suddenly interesting and they not only don't mind the repetition, but they are drawn to it and want to hear more to see where it is going. I think that repetition not just of words, but phrases and how they fit into the rhythm of the piece and how they lead through the melody helps to cement meaning and emotion into the words and phrases. It makes them accessible, fun, and alive.

You play the guitar very well! I love instruments haha!!! 😁 Learn languages with music is great it inspires me a lot. I always search music when I'm learning languages aaa loot by the way my last video I share songs I like in 7 languages 😁. I can play the keyboard but I never learned songs to sing with it. It's a great idea

Aw thanks Esther! 😄 Yes I actually saw on your channel that you had a video about music 🤓🎵Very cool! I think that if you have the skill of playing the keyboard it would be a wonderful activity for you to learn songs in the languages you're learning so that you can both play and sing them together! 😁Let me know if you pick your first song!

I started learning English a year ago memorising lyrics of my favourite songs, I wouldn't say it helps me a lot, but I noticed that this process took 2 days back then for songs that I heard in the first time. Now it takes just 1 day for memorising full song. Anyway I feel happy when I can sing a song clearly without peeking words

Hmm yes that's quite similar to my experience I think! In that I do enjoy it and it helps me with motivation for learning; and I don't necessarily feel like it helps me a lot but it does seem to get easier as I get better at the language. It's almost a bit of a litmus test to help us see how much better we are getting. It feels worthwhile if you enjoy it and for me I definitely have picked up some helpful words already and I'm finding that the words I pick up from songs do stick, but it doesn't feel like a groundbreaking method that I would recommend over other things.

I am so loving your videos - they have helped my progress so much! It seems to me that you bring a real emotional intelligence to the language learning field. Thank you! I do have a question. In another video you mention learning songs in Chinese and on your checklist sheet you have Vocab, Translate and Sing Along. What is the difference between vocab and translate as far as what study method you actually do.

[spoiler: karaoke] For a while now I've been meaning to learn to sing songs while playing the guitar, but my guitar skills are lacking so right now it feels like it would be too time consuming. But listening to music in my foreign languages have been the basis of my routine for years and years. Pretty much all the songs in my music library are in foreign languages (that are not English). But that's just passive listening, and while it's super fun, I don't get much out of it language-learning-wise. So what I do now is that I go to this weekly language café in my area, and on most nights now, we do a little bit a karaoke. So every now and then this gives me motivation to learn a specific song to sing at the karaoke. The only things that's not so cool, is that I have to sing those songs alone, because nobody here knows them! Good thing I don't have stage fright but singing with others is usually much more fun. I'm trying to recruit others to practice some of my languages, at least Portuguese, but no luck so far.

I am going to have quite a bit of content coming out about learning languages with music later this year, along with posting covers in different languages, as I’ve been studying languages with songs so much the last few years 😊 Stay tuned 😊

I think using music for languages is probably the worst method for a few main reasons. 1. Most music lyrics aren't said in real life 2. In English I can't even make out what singers are saying because of their pitch
