My goal in this video was to use the double blip technique to ride over the log and land softly on two wheels on the other side. The double blip technique is extremely tough to learn, especially on a full sized bike rather than a trials bike. But it’s something Ive been working on for a long time and had a bit of a break through today. I didn’t quite nail it but I will break it all down for you guys. We will go over what went wrong and what went right and then hopefully I can nail it on the next round.
So getting over a log this size with the double blip method can be intimidating. It’s not a problem to get over it with a more simple method such as using the skid plate (which I’ll show you guys later on), but the double blip is certainly more difficult. I definitely had to psych my self up for this one and really think about all the steps in my head before attempting it.
A lot of things need to come together with perfect timing to make this work. The things that I’m really focusing on are not coming in with a bunch of speed, punching the log with my front tire about 2/3’s of the way up, giving it that burst of throttle with the pop of the clutch to get the rear wheel to jump up the log, and making sure to get my weight back over the rear fender so the rear wheel doesn’t spin on the log.

I’m 24 and just started dirt biking. There is so much more to it than I originally thought. I love your videos and how you show your process, your mistakes, and how you deal with them and keep moving forward then celebrate in the end. You have a great mindset and it’s inspiring. You and your videos have been very helpful to me.

I love the emotional honesty you bring to your lessons. Lot of folks don't have the rocks to say "This is the part that scares me." but that is part of getting a new technique in the tool bag. You do a great job of showing all the good, bad, and progress that comes from practice. And that, along with the technique, is what makes everyone a better rider, practice!

You could have just moved like three feet to the right and gone right around the log. JK nice work Megs that takes serious commitment to use this technique on a log that size.

Megg you tackled that log like a bad ass! Im proud you made a vid about this. I love this manuever everytime ive ever seen a stump, log, rock im Sending it! I never knew this maneuver had a name. Double blip. So "double blippin" is sometimes one of the few options in couple parts of my woods. The core technique is tricky. When its landed perfect on 2 wheels, the excitement is thru the roof!! It should be practiced to get out of certain scenarios. Kinda feels like a bunny hop when done smooth. Compression and jumping is essential. Sweet spot on throttle is a must. Most of all don't sissy out mid log. We all have done it. Lol Btw we appreciate you hauling your camera in the woods to film this. That minor inconvenience on a bike gives us content when were in the AC! Stay safe! ✌

Watching you slide off the side to touch is bad ass. So many people think you have to flat foot a bike to ride it. You rock.

Hobblecreekkid Thats exactly my point when I hear people complaining about too high bikes. Many enduro riders will never be able to get even two foot tips down. Move your a... to the side, get one foot down and thats enough. I am 1.71m with a 30“ inseam and have no problem that way with my KTM 790 R!

It is amazing how dirt bikes and talent have progressed. Megs would have been a Tier One Pro when I was a teenager. Jarvis is already a god winning Erzberg again, number #5, technically #6! I can only imagine how far the sport will progress in another 20 years. Thanks to technology good riders can share what they've learned. I wish I had this resource when I was a kid. I could have been a contender lol. The younger readers may not get the reference.

WOOOW GREAT JOB!!!!! I mastered this a looooong time ago aboard a 1982 Suzuki RM 250Z. It was actually a phenomenal trail bike and it handled large logs almost effortlessly when I finally got the balls to commit to the practice. I had a really nice pipe guard but no engine guard on that bike. Never had any problems. I liked that bike so much I went out and bought another one when my first one got worn out. Wish I still had it. One of my all time favorite bikes, and I've had 48 in my long off road riding career. I'm 54 now. I had those RM's when I was in my teens and early 20's My current ride is a 2010 Husaberg FE 570. Love this torque monster!!!!

Great vid on a difficult issue. I recemtly started practicing a big 75cm profile loader tyre that is hardly the axle length of the bike. That lets you stop on top, breath, and come down on your own time when ready. This seems to really help me dreak down the up an down. Log and bigger rock started to have a new peace to them.

Staying on the throttle for the second blip is the hardest part for me, it’s kinda a mental hurdle as your brain is telling you to let off...I’m trying to over come this by picturing the time I tucked my front tire under a large log and took a one way trip over the bars. Slowly but surely reinforcing it into my thick skull that it’s better to keep that front tire high! Great vid Megs, keep on braaping ✊️

It's not the size of the log that was intimidating. It was performing this new technique on a log that size that was getting to me. I was hesitating because I have a million steps going through my head that I'm trying to time perfectly. If I came up to it and didn't feel like I had my shit together, I'd hesitate and loop around for another go. If it were just "get over this log any way possible", I have smashed over it without hesitation hahaha.

@Megs Braap , I'm no expert at this, but when I compare your attempts to Quinn (in the suspended log video), you are throwing your hips forward like you are trying to unweight the rear and roll over the log. This seems to be letting the rear suspension unload after the rear tire hits the log. Quinn unweighted the bike vertically, then immediately moved his hips rearward and held pressure on the rear suspension while the rear tire hit the log. This kept the rear suspension compressed and the rear tire in contact with the log.

Love your tutorial videos, You are on hell of a rider. Have been working on more enduro riding methods for a few years now. Just started trying these a couple of days ago. I can get the punch method to work on 24 inch logs but the bigger ones I can't seem to time the second clutch pop right. Should I be dumping the clutch as my front wheel punches the log or after the front suspension compresses most of the way?

Awesome demonstration and brakedown. I'm working on this also and learning to hold pressure seems to be the hardest part for me even on smaller logs. do you find starting on something not so intimidating better, or just go for the huge log and fail it till you nail it?
@megs_braap
@megs_braap 5 лет назад
Thanks! I would definitely recommend trying this on a small obstacle first. It is massively more difficult on a log this size because the bottom is undercut. You can't ride up it like a camp. But if you practice this on a smaller log to get the timing down, it will help you get to this stage!
