Hi Jo I'm a dairy farmer and I fill my raised beds with ordinary soil combined with cow manure and used bedding. It is inexpensive and supplies the plants with plenty of natural fertilizer. I remember you borrowed a tractor from a local dairy farmer to push snow - maybe than can supply what you need

Love how you shared your snack with the pooches! I always let my dog get a bite of what I eat 😋 For cleaning that dust and derbis off the sprinkler, use a little brush with stiff bristles, a metal brush if you got one. Even a hard toothbrush will be easier than picking at it with a screwdriver. I don't farm, but I have cleaned off dirt plenty of times 🤣

Plant nurseries in my area (Norman, OK) have mulch that you can buy. The closest one has 6-8 different varieties-cedar, pine, etc. It’s generally loaded by a front-end loader and priced per bucket. But that type of business may have to be near sizable population centers.

My raised beds are 4' wide - can reach the middle from each side. They are not very tall (takes a lot of material to fill them - I think higher beds only of benefit for a bad back / disabled) - just enough to help with drainage (heavy clay here). Consider thickness of the surround - thick railway sleepers look nice, good to sit on,. but they take up a lot of the actual bed. My paths are the narrowest that I can get a wheelbarrow down (maximise space for crops). All my beds are identical size, so that my crop rotation can use any bed and not have to adapt for various different sized beds. That makes it all look rather industrial, but my vegetable garden isn't for show - I have a separate ornamental garden for the pretty stuff :)

When you're 76, reaching the ground is very difficult (it keeps moving farther down each year), so raised beds are essential for me. Someday you will know!

Here is something that I learned to do with the raised garden beds. Depending on how tall your garden bed is, instead of filling it all with soil. Start out with firewood and leaves. As these items break down, they supply nutritional value for your soil and plants/produce. You also won't have to pay for that much more soil if you need to buy it.

Raised bed fill: I ran a large community garden for many years. Here's some suggestions. A load of top soil and another of compost makes a fairly decent blend. Cow manure is a great supplement. Here's a couple of sources you may not have thought about. Coffee shops may give you their used coffee grounds. That makes an excellent balancing additive for soil health. The second is that your local high school probably has an agriculture program complete with barns for cattle and sheep. The kids clean the stalls and dump the old hay and manure in large dumpsters. Check with the school and see if you might be able to take a pickup load or two for free. Here's the catch with that, you can end up with weeds. We would take black garbage bags and fill them, lightly close the top, and let them stew in the sun for a few weeks. This will help kill out the weed seeds. Make sure they can vent a little or really exciting things can happen that your local fire department won't appreciate. (Ummm, yeah....) Hopefully this will kickstart your efforts. ~Many blessings!

Oh man you have no idea how much I appreciate hearing about REAL people and not just google tell me their experiences. Thank you so much! So I live next to a horse and cattle pen where a few are kept I should ask the owner. I heard there’s a treatment plant close to me that sells compost by the ton? I am kind of leaning towards buying an old cattle tank from a local farmer? Like 2 8 foot wide circular ones to put tomatoes in? Gosh I don’t know. I can’t decide but it needs to be fast and easy

@@JojoSnow01 2x8 will be fine, and more manageable to start with. Too often we start with the best intentions and fade away when our lives get busy and the summer heat drains the life out of us. ALSO, as important....address the watering method. Automatic timers and a drip irrigation system is very beneficial. Here's a thought process I would encourage anyone to consider: think about the things you most want to do, and ask yourself what is preventing you from doing them, and be very specific with your answers. Then, address those specific things. Being disciplined to water on a schedule can often be a problem. Automatic sprinkler is a solution. Very specific. I hate pulling weeds, so the garden gets away from me....put down a vinyl ground tarp, cut circular holes for the crop to grow through. Very specific. E.t.c. You seem to be a very deliberate person, so I know you'll smash this. I look forward to seeing your successes.

@@JojoSnow01hello jojo, if I may, never put anything other than plant compost for your vegetables, coffee grounds are excellent but in small doses, otherwise we in France, we grow vegetables in greenhouses to protect them from pests and we put wood chips on the ground to maintain a certain humidity, this avoids overwatering, I hope all is well with you, be well and good luck

@robertm348
@robertm348 6 месяцев назад
For your raised beds, first line the bottom with cardboard, then fill the bottom third with sticks, logs, branches, twigs, etc. to prevent you having to fill it with expensive topsoil. Then, buy your dirt from a reputable dealer. They may try to sell you dirt that has pesticides and herbicides. Ask if you can take a sample to your county extension agent for testing. If it has herbicides, it may take as long as five years to degrade enough to not kill your veggies! If the soil is good, for each wheelbarrow of dirt, add two shovels full of sand, two of Perlite and two of peat moss. Then, after your beds are full, add 1/2" of good compost into the top two inches and plant your seeds and seedlings. You should not have to add any fertilizer for the entire growing season. For your tomatoes, though, add a bit of calcium to prevent blossom end rot.

Many people in my area use old railroad ties. Unless they are already half rotten they last 10+ years.. If you make them longer and higher than the thickness and the length of the ties make sure you put an upright at the joint . If you do stack them you may want to reinforce them by putting a piece of rebar through them. Normally 2 per piece is enough, this ties them together. You can do that on the bottom layer to anchor it in the ground. This way they want get kicked around. . Make those longer than the others for better stability. I would suggest 15-18 inches. If you decide to do that, drill the hole slightly smaller than the rebar. By doing this it will act like a big nail going into a piece of wood. May not be the cheapest way initially but it probably will be in the long term. This sounds like a lot of work but like any job once set up it doesn't take that long. One of the down side is they're heavy and something you can't handle by yourself. On the upside once built you're not going to have to deal with it again anytime soon.

Fill your raised beds with dried feedlot manure. You should be able to find a farmer in your area that would let you have some for the taking. You won’t have any herbicides in the soil and it’ll be fertile enough that you won’t need fertilizer for a year or two.

On my little farm I was asked about if I was planning on doing raised beds. The answer was 'no'. I thought about it, but...I just didn't see a big advantage in it. Since I'm not going that way. I can subdivide as needed. When you do raised beds, you are kind of casting the size of each one in stone, so to speak.
