This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Can we learn to lead, or is leadership something we're born with? In this thought-provoking talk, Tasha Eurich shares a prescription to be not just awesome at leadership, but anything else you want to improve.
With a contagious passion and energy, Tasha Eurich pairs her scientific savvy in human behavior with a practical approach to solving business challenges. Her life's work is to help companies succeed by making their leaders awesome. In 2013, Tasha released her first book "Bankable Leadership: Happy People, Bottom Line Results and the Power to Deliver Both." It debuted at #8 on the New York Times best-seller list and was named a Top 10 Small Business book by Small Business Trends in 2013.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

It was a valuable talk and I learnt something. Unfortunately, her public speaking skills let her down. It's true that she came across as trying too hard, even condescending at times (like, "Listen to me, I'm the expert on this and I know what I'm talking about") and most of her jokes fell flat because they were artificial and over-rehearsed. I tried very hard to shut out her annoying inauthenticity in order to hear the useful points she was making. If she could be less-rehearsed, more humble and more natural, she would be way more powerful a speaker.

I believe the message was a good message and i believe it will be very effective for those who apply it in their lives. This may be simply a personal preference, but the speaker used a very theatrical voice or tone. I felt as if at times it was like watching a play that was scripted and the actor under developed. It pulled me out of the moment. If the message were not so good i would have click off the site. I think keeping it real and less scripted will hold the audiences attention more effectively. Clearly she is smart and experienced but people need to feel and connect.

As a performer you have hit on an important concept that most people overlook: no one's "voice" is for everyone. The fact that the message kept pulling you back shows its strength to overcome whatever it is about Tasha's style or voice that you perceive as discomforting. No ones voice is for everyone. That's why Taylor swift only sells 9 million albums and not 90 million- more dislike her than like her. Same concept for Tasha or anyone.

fedexairbus I agree and that is why I mentioned "for me." It is a matter of preference and I agree that her message was strong. I also commented on that as well by saying that if the message were not so good I may not have continued to watch. I tend to prefer to feel connection and a "real" sense of presence. I did take great things from her message. I personally would have just felt more connection with less of a scripted tone. It is not easy to get up there and do that. I guess I just like constructive input when I do things to hone my art.

Amanda tompkins Because so many people have childhood daddy issues, they have a deep desire to drive the train and tell others what to do, basically the want to push others around and get paid. Unless you are a golfer or poet, success will probably be the result of a concentrated team effort to provide skills, services, or products to a customer. So guess what new-agers, you need to put down the X-box, go outside, and do something with others to succeed.
@gunuin
@gunuin 9 лет назад
***** I sadly agree. And it is my experience with so many bad leaders and administrators that has inspired me to be a leader who looks to a servant leadership model, a leader in service of those who I have "power" over. I see leadership as simply being a good person, and as simple or general as this sounds, the most important aspect of it imho is putting other people first, getting my ego out of the way, and figuring out what is best for our clients, our staff, and for creating a social healthy environment to work in.
@AFuller2020
@AFuller2020 9 лет назад
Gabriel Nunez-Soria I think you might want to think about giving a Ted talk Gab, you have hit the nail on the head. Putting the team ahead of your personal life, sacrificing for the good of the product or service is critical for success, yes it is selfish, but customers care about product, I'ts all about the customer and moving your product. Steve Jobs was no saint, but he wanted the best possible product for his customers, style mattered. You sound like you have the right attitude and determination, we need more of this in the US.
@gunuin

***** Well thank you. I am in school administration, so for us we have one product, our curriculum, and one set of clients, students. I am extremely lucky that my leadership team is all on the same page and we are working with ideas spawned by Patrick Lencioni. Check out his work on healthy organizations and the 5 dysfunctions of a team. His main premise is putting others first, and working to create a healthy environment where real trust can be fostered through leaders demonstrating the ability to be vulnerable, to be human.

@frimmin
@frimmin 6 лет назад
Lower management positions are usually awarded to the top performers based on their results. The idea is: Steve wowed us with his mind-blowing performance in sales, let’s promote him and get him to replicate his magic. The unfortunate fact is management skills usually have NOTHING to do with what the junior manager was doing that earned him the promotion. Laurence Peter wrote about this in a best-selling book years ago, “The Peter Principle” which argued that in any hierarchy, people tend to be promoted up to a level of tolerable incompetence.

Learning how to be awesome at something is not the problem. Most people don't know what it is they want. Once you have a goal in life the rest is gravy. You might not be an expert overnight, but it's just a matter of time before you accomplish your goal. A lot of people flip flop on their goals. This won't work. You can't do this. You have one goal and stick with it. The rest falls into place.

"What they would say" is irrelevant. The fact they noticed the difference is what is important.

I believe fundamentally she is right. Except maybe in sports. Some people are more gifted in certain areas and therefore don't have to practice as much. John McEnroe readily admitted he didn't practice near as much as some of his junior competitors. His hand eye coordination was incredible as well as his knowledge of the game. Others - Borg, Federer, yes they all practice like crazy but so do hundreds of other players.

Marathons are the same - bulshit, proved by doctors. Your VO2 max is defined by genes, max heart rate, shin length and bone weight is defined by genes and race. That's why majority of top long runners are from Kenya. Go ahead, tell more beautiful facts, so you can fit some pleasant ideas into naive ppl.

Sociopaths or psychopaths are not fully that 100%. They have shades of these behaviours. There are shades of variations. This is well established. This means they can also improve. However this talk is reiterating the obvious.

I disagree. Steve was exceptional because he could apply the practice to concentrate to improve at the amount he did. Most of us are mediocre at improving ourselves. But mediocre is still better than nothing.

Step one know thyself or in other words take an honest look at your life and honestly admit what's working and what's not working. What results have you created that you like and the ones that you don't like. Now that you know where you fall short in your life or you're not where you want to be, now you can make a list of all of those areas/traits/results that you don't like. Then you can arrange that list from highest ROI to lowest ROI in terms of your time, energy, and money. Next you can select the highest ROI item as the first thing to work on and the only thing you'll work on until you see meaningful Improvement. Finally, you decide what method to use to practice, decide when you will create an opportunity to practice in each day, and you'll practice daily and measure your progress. No you can improve anything and be awesome😉

To save viewers time : 1) List all what you need to improve 2) find ways to learn how to improve 3) practice those exercises every single days Voilà! But I just don't understand what's new about this common truth. Practice has always been everything.

surgeon complication rates- bad example because if you are world class you are taking on the most difficult, riskiest, most complex cases, which might have a higher complication rate. does this mean you should yank tonsils all day so you can have a 97% success rate? of course not. a very silly simplistic point.
