Thanks to InMotion for sending me a loaner Glide 3 electric unicycle. They didn't pay for this video or even know I would make it. SPEED keeps the unicycle up. Forget about turns in the beginning. Once you feel like you have good balance going straight and you have more confidence in the wheel staying up then add a wide turn and when you get understanding how you use your feet to turn start making a tighter turn. Once you master that try going as slow as you can to work on balancing the wheel. Don’t try to learn the wheel in a day, a week or a month. Everyone learns at a different pace. Even when you can ride really well it could take 4-6 months to ride with total confidence. Relax and stand straight up.

I have five of these unholy creatures, in every size except the 22 inch Monster. Your "swimming" is actually helpful and useful, as even extremely skilled riders do that when going over difficult terrain. And Inmotion's advice to keep straight is quite wrong; butt out and leaning forward with bent knees (the athletic stance) is far safer especially when going over bumps or through fields. Your feet could be further forward; if you can imagine the axle of your wheel going through the bony portion of your ankle then that is the most balanced position. Rather than tip the wheel to steer instead swivel your hips. Commonly your (correct) instinct is to tip the wheel in the direction you are unbalanced towards but this is inappropriate at the lower speeds; instead swivel your hips toward the direction you wish to recover. You may imagine yourself on a bicycle but instead of being on the seat you are, instead, sitting on the handlebars. In fact, you are on a bicycle but with the rear wheel being provided with the self balancing instead of an "actual" wheel. I thought you did much better than most people, as mounting for most is entirely out of the question.

Out of the question, can confirm. :D Though for now I'm still blaming it on the lack of shin-level padding which makes it painful to glide forward with just one leg on it like in the Inmotion instructions.

This is one of the best learning videos I've ever watched because despite the 'proper technique' vids out there, many of us actually do want to just hop on and give it a go. This was so fun to watch with Benny Hill music in my head.

What I'm getting is that you're showing how rapidly adaptation and neural network formation can occur. You'll hurt like hell for a while as your muscles max out in keeping your face outa the turf. Also, it'll slow your aging process down, because you'll constantly be challenging your balancing abilities. Stick with it 😊
@ronnedal

Soon you'll realize that pretty much all balance and turning is done with your feet. I know many recommend the running start because you'll find your balance faster. But if you do a standing start with holding on to something you'll get time to plant your feet exactly where you want them. And for me foot placement is really important. I need to get my feet just right to have a pleasant ride. And in the first couple of days you don't want to adjust your foot placement while riding. There's now rights or wrongs concerning foot placement. What works for me is to keep my heels tucked in real tight to the body of the wheel and my toes slightly out. On the video it looked like you had the wheel backwards. There is a front and a back. And you can adjust the foot plate offset (tilt) in the app. I use about a 2% offset which feels straight since you're always bending your knees slightly. The only reason you want to ride the wheel with the front facing forward is if you have and offset. Good luck! You're only a few hours away from totally master something you will enjoy for years to come!

These are the most attractive electric ride-on thing for me because of the performance to size ratio. It will fit in any vehicle, could even be carried on a motorcycle, but can have a big battery and should be fairly hard to damage (aside from scuffs). The relatively large wheel should be relatively smooth-riding compared to tiny skateboard or small scooter wheels. Once you get good it should also be able to turn much tighter than just about anything else. But that learning curve... I think your choice of learning surface may be safer and may be easier to balance, but may also be relatively slippery and be more difficult for that reason. Just a guess, though.

I live in NYC, and ordered this because of the portability. I don't have a car but sometimes I'll order a ride and toss my skateboard or e-scooter in there. This can be brought into many places like stores, public transportation, etc.

I bought two unicycles years ago. They still work. I moved from unicycles to Skikes. I bet you never heard of Skikes. The word Skikes comes from Ski and Skating. Germans invented them a few years ago. They are off road skates. The sport is skiking not skating. Regarding unicycle, make sure you always wear wrist guards. One wrong fall can be a life with wrist pain. It's not a joke. Even when you learn with confidence, still wear wrist guards. Find them on Amazon with the brand name K2. They are pricey because they are the top brand for wrist guards. Best value is the package including the elbow & knee.

It's actually harder to ride on grass. I tried the wall thing for awhile and it actually made it slow down me getting on it quicker. I went to baseball field and road the bases and then just did the street and I was fine

well done, it took me 4 hours to get to that stage on my Gotway MCM5, I am 60+. Try long slow pushes to kick off, balancing on just your lead foot and stopping, don't mount it properly with both feet, you really need to learn how to do that. Important: planting your feet wrongly = fail/fallover, if you can master slowly planting your second foot correctly and not out of line is the way to go. It is very hard to re position your foot once it is planted on the pedal (really).

I applaud your willingness to video the rough stages of learning. I'm there currently myself. When I saw your video, the first thing that occurred to me was, many people say that grass is not a good surface to learn on. What is your take about that line of thought? How are you doing with the wheeling now? Thanks for your time and reply.

Great video! I like how the drone was following the action xD And: Welcome to the EUC club! It's an amazing feeling which you will like for sure ;) Tip: Be sure to learn riding only with ONE foot. This is how you start. Once you get this, learn to make turns and very slow. Yes, faster is easier but you have to learn the hard before going between bikes and other people. Have fun and use protection :)

Hi Micah I, I just received my electric unicycle last week. I have soccer fields similar to the one in your video nearby but they are all closed due to the pandemic lockdown. As soon as they reopen that's where I'm heading. In the meantime I'm just going to try to find a grassy field somewhere hopefully that's mowed well enough for me to learn. It was impressive how quickly you picked it up.

I have spent a bunch of sessions with a gotway monster, what helped me was standing super straight, but also relax your knees. Think like you are a pencil when you lean left or right so you can learn how to turn. Also making the Jesus pose helps when you're braking from Fast to slow

Doing good for your time learning. I bought on just like yours couldn't make sense how to ride it. Yes I have ridden every thing on two wheels Scott's motorcycles skate boards ex. So I took a different tack. I have a friend that actually rides a pedal powered uncycle. First he picked up how to ride a electric one really quickly. He also told me that less than 1% of the world ride any unicycle. What he showed me is to learn different aspects of riding but seperatly. He kinda invented a walker for unicycle electric or pedal powered . Learn to control the movement before balancing. Learning to control movement allows you to have balance. By pushing using a wheel cart or fabricated walker back and forth you attain controled movement , after that you can work on your balance, which by the way the faster you go the easier it is to balance. Oh by the way I'm 62 hang in there.

Just started learning on my own yesterday. Spent 2 hours on the fence and 3 hours on the field where I was able to ride for at least a minute but still have wobbles and mostly left turns lol. I'm surprised he wable to accomplish what took me 5 hours, but for him just about 30 minutes. I had let me nephew try it and he was able to learn just as fast as he did in this video.

Hi learning fast, you must twist the wheel with your legs as you would correct on a bicycle with your hands when going slowly, where you look is where you go, slight shoulder rotation for gentle turns, great place to learn and I don’t believe in any props like a trolley or holding onto someone, you have to back yourself, learn to jump off gracefully, it’s about confidence , trust and muscle memory feel

Use a shopping cart from a supermarket or a weighted laundry bag shopping cart and use that as your training wheel. Also, you can use a tether. Tie e a strap or rope to the handle and your wrist if you want to save the euc from falling on a hard surface, but be careful that you are not going at high speeds because it can pull on your wrist really hard. Furthermore, wear a helmet. Lastly, the eucs are quite heavy and can exert quite a bit of pressure on your knees in an awkward position so if you try to stop & save your euc from damage you may end up with a twisted knee. Btw, the cover is called a protective neoprene sleeve or sock. You can get one from ewheels.com if the manufacturer doesn’t offer one. They are pricey, though.

That was a little painful watching... but you'll get it.... Have you checked out the other videos already on these on RU-vid?? there's tons on this and I feel like there were a ton of tips on what not to do... It's totally natural to throw arms about to keep in check for balance- but I don't remember seeing that in the other how to videos.... I seem to remember them saying that the key is relaxing... just like with segueys ... if you stiffen and make your body rigid, it will never happen for you... smooth like jello.... just knowing that you were on turf and really can't hurt yourself too much falling on the soft artificial turf--- should make way to make yourself relax and remain flexible.
@EbikeSchool
@EbikeSchool 5 лет назад
Thanks! I actually took the unicycle back out today for a second session and I improved a ton. I was riding for like 5 minutes at a time and could turn in both directions! I found the keys are 1: relaxing (like you said) and 2: looking off in the distance at the point you want to go and not at the ground directly in front of you.
@stvcolwill
@stvcolwill 5 лет назад
@@EbikeSchool sounds like your well done with improving... I also remember them saying to keep your back straight and that it isn't natural to do that ... and think about leading with your hips--- which isn't natural either. anyways--- you should definitely post addendum video so that we can see a pro in action --- wait.... we'll see the review video anyways. Your 'looking off into the distance where you want to go' so reminds me of a father's advise to anyone learning how to ride a bike.... Haha..you should have joined the circus...they have unicycles as well...lol...I liked the video it showed how hard it is..but apart from e bikes...e scooters...e skate boards...I definitely won't be using one to for work.....if you have time a quick explanation of the Gyro system used would be interesting. 😀👌👍

I'd use smooth tarmac as grass is too gooey, also look further ahead because if you drive a car and look at the bonnet/hood you'll be weaving all over the road. Try tying a brick to each foot for less top weight, obviously get a Michelin man padded suit for the accidental falling over, hold a bunch of helium filled balloons in each hand to create EVEN MORE viewing enjoyment for us, you know when you learnt to ride a bicycle speed and momentum kept you vertical so trade up to the top model and add a 52 volts battery to each brick for extra speed/enjoyment....push a shopping trolley around the supermarket with all of the above on and no doubt you'll get assistance from a burly security guard each side...oh I could go on and on but I don't want to fill the internet up....have fun and let your drone pull you along...the swimming hands are probably due to the conflicting information that your inner ear balancing mechanism is sending...

Thanks! I actually tried a second session this morning on an asphalt path in the park and it went so much better! Looking far ahead is the key! I was riding for like 5 minutes at a time. Definitely the best tip, I wish I had seen it somewhere before I started... it would have saved me a lot of time!

@@EbikeSchool that is what 62 years of planetary experience brings, I've already had three back operations BUT I soooo want to ride a vehicle using electricity, slowly gathering information on making a cheap but engineered spot welder to venture down paths when common sense dictates otherwise...keep up the good work my friend...
