Learning To Stickhandle With My Wrong Hand 🏒

I bought a right-handed stick to try and become the world's first ambidextrous hockey player.
After wanting to learn what it feels like to be a beginner stickhandler again and to see if my stickhandling training videos were helpful for players of all skills, I decided to learn from scratch with my wrong hand.
I gave myself 14 days to learn stickhandling with my wrong hand before I would have to put it to the test in a pick-up game.
Let's see how it goes.

Piggybacking off of dominant top hand strength, one of the worst things a beginner or intermediate player can do is use Buttendz or Lizard Skins grips in order to get a better feel of the puck or to have more control with it. Generally speaking, as is stated in the video, they have not put in the required time to improve and changing to one of these grips will significantly hamper their ability while it is being used (speaking from experience). The highest level of grip that should be used is the Stretch Grip Tape. Regular hockey tape has been able to produce superstars for over 100 years.

A youth hockey program out of Connecticut called GC Hockey makes the kids practice non-dominate hand for part of each practice. They kind of have to graduate to the stick they are used to.

It’s fun to see you try righty and it would be really cool to see you do the stick handling drills righty so I can see if I’m doing them right 😜

What about doing the same with shooting. And do you think that using an opposite stick side can help improve crossover on the other side, for a lefty is easier to crossover to the left than to the right, so using a right handed stick and doing skating, stickhandleling on the opposing side can help ?

I'm right handed and shoot right, I know that isn't ideal... dominant hand on top is ideal.... but anyways. When I went full time goalie I bought a left handed forward stick to play on the pond so that I could learn to be a better stick handling goalie. I can still play both hands but my shot is still better right

I am right hand dominate, but was always given right shooting sticks growing up. I never knew that your top hand is supposed to be your dominate hand, and I guess I was pretty good using the wrong handedness because coaches never questioned me. Since shooting right is what I have been using my entire life, would it be worth going through the effort of learning how to shoot left? I feel like I could have been a much better stick handler if I grew up using my dominate hand... Or should I just focus on strengthening my less dominate hand? I am a 30 year old beer league player at this point but always looking for ways to improve.

Really it comes down to personal preference and what is comfortable to YOU. I would say it isn’t worth it and I wouldn’t dwell on it. If it bothers you that much buy a left handed stick and practice with it to see if it will be worth it to make the switch.

@@dennispick thanks Dennis, I have actually stopped caring about what could have been. I tried using a buddies left handed stick and came to the same conclusion that it's just not worth it. I know that players like MacKinnon are right hand dominant and shoot right handed... Although he is in a different stratosphere of skill, it made me realize that it's just preference like you said. Each handedness have their own pros and cons as well. So no need to dwell on it. Just play with what you are comfortable with. Couldn't agree more.

Hi you say wrong hand and left stick right stick I'm new to hockey and play inline when I started someone asked if I'm right handed so gave me a left stick but most players in newzelend play with right sticks I'm confused I like using my right hand for things but feel like I have no accuracy shooting sometimes passing as I'm using my left hand any tips or should I just stick with it I can see pros and cons for both

I would go with what feels best. Your top hand is most important on the stick, so usually people will go with their strong hand on top but not always.

Content of the video is good. Title is a bit cringe, and undermines credibility, especially when people know that, one, training with your off hand is viable training method, and two, Gordie Howe and Chris Chelios could and would shoot both ways in the NHL back in the day. Howe was true ambidextrous and Chelios was forced to learn when his father bought a bunch of sticks on sale that were the wrong hand. I get youtube algorithms and stuff, but maybe try a less obvious click bait title.
