I don't even find these so cringey tbh, I would have loved to see that as a kid. The supportive parent thing is nice. I remember that I was really into the game when it first came out, so much so that my mom often accused me of worshipping the game, I dunno maybe she misinterpreted overhearing me mentioning the god cards, but it did hurt. I've actually been buying extra boxes of new sets to keep for later, that way if I do have kids and they take an interest in the game, I can give them a more fleshed out card pool to play with. And of course if that simply doesn't happen, I can always resell or open them later.

I think it was an official one from Konami, because it had the voice actors for Yugi and Joey (or people pretending to be them anyway) giving the lessons. The only thing I really remember from it (aside from the rules apparently haha), was the advice to shake your opponent's hand at the start of the duel. We thought it was funny to do that, for whatever reason, and would constantly reference it before our duels. Man, I wish I still had that DVD.

Man, I remember now a specific guy I dueled against, he had a really ... uncommon opinion about what a side deck is for. So, whenever he needed a card to counter strategy or get rid of some pressure, he just drew or picked a card from his side deck, and we were like "dude, wtf are you doing?" Then he "explained" , that this is, what a side deck is for, that one have acess to those cards at any time. I barley felt so much despair and anger about a dude, but he really messed it up. It was so fkn wild.

The opening to that Yu-Gi-Oh DVD kinda reminds me of the old Charlie's angels TV show I think from the 70s. Were Charlie would give the angels their mission through a speaker box. Also, I kinda wish that we had gotten the original first japanese print of Toon World. Its effect was: pay 1000 life points to activate Toon World and then pay another 500 each standby phase. If Toon World is destroyed, you gain life points equal to the life points paid for this cards effect.

I developed a method of play testing my decks, when it came time to attack i “randomly” picked a card to destroy if there was two or more from the monster zones or trap/spell zones. I’d flip a coin three times. Since there are 5 spots, the first flip of the coin determined the 1st 3 from my left if it was heads, then the last 3 to my right, then out of those 3, i’d flip the coin again to choose the first 2 or last 2. For the final flip is to determine the furtherest most to my left or right.

Oooh! This was fun! I was honestly unsure what had come first..rituals or toons..it had been so long since both were released and I was a kid. Turns out they were both introduced in Spell Ruler AKA Magic Ruler. I do remember wanting the toons because of the anime but people hating them for all the restrictions and dependency on Toon World at first. When they were first out, I remember the ritual monsters actually being a bigger deal. They had their adveantages over polymerization because you only needed the ritual monster, the ritual spell and any high level moneter to get it out. This worked well in a beat-down deck where you could put in some high level monsters for the ritual summon as well as to be tribute summoned out afterward. It was a quick way to cheese-out strong tribute monsters in a single turn through the special summons more than anything. At the time, generic fusion and contact fusion was not established so you needed ploymerization and at least two or more specific materials. Most fusion mosnters were not super impressive either so ritual spamming had a bit of an advantage, shortly. Toons COULD do this but the cost and restrictions to balance them went way too far for that first gen. Relinquished was the cover art card released in that same set. It was more often used on field to turn the opponent's monster agaisnt them, however, do remember it used in ritual spam decks for a combo. It was one of the easiest to ritual summon with its low level, so you would dump the least useful monster in hand to get it out. You would then steal an opponent's monster (usually the last one they had) then use Relinquished to tribute into a stronger monster. This would get rid of your opponent's monster and without a destruction effect. It also often would allow a direct attack. Since you could steal a face down monster your opponent likely just had as defence, it would ensure your reliquished was not left on the field with vulnerable stats, you got a big tribute monster on the field and your opponent's weak defence monster was removed. The toon Blue-Eyes released in the same set, by comparison, required you to have played Toon world and paid 1000 LP as a result, have it stay on the field as T.B.E. would leave if it did, tribute two monsters ON THE FIELD for its special summon, wait a turn to attack and pay a further 500 LP each time it did. This was pretty insane..relinquished was a one turn Summoned Skull that could immediatly attack and non-destruction monster removal for your opponent in the same act. OR, it could be used to steal a Blue-Eyes for an even higher attack and use the monster as a meat shield giving it versititly in thebdeck. Toons, even at first; were slow, required too many resources and were very vulnerable all for the special summon and direct attack gimik. One major difference was field reliance for the special summon. Toons needed to tribute monsters on the field for their special summon to end with them being the high attack on the field. Rituals used monsters in hand to get directly to the field themselves. Most did not have that impressive of attack themeselves for their level but were free tributes then for higher vanilla monsters. You also could ritual summon twice in one turn then tribute for a Blue-Eyes. Without many low level toons, spamming onto the field was not as easy as this video made them sound..certainly less so than rituals..to answer your question, I would say fusions were the first, (they were a special summon from to field using monsters that didnt need to be on the field that you could then tribute for something better), followed by a tie of toons and rituals..but with the coviate of toons not actually being popular or very sucessful with this.

If they made a new guide for modern Yu-Gi-Oh, it would include something like this: Order a pizza AND eat it while waiting for your opponent to play their entire deck lmao.

IDK if it's a good idea to talk about it in the comments, but I thought it was really cool that during the video (when you were talking about the "magic vs spell cards" thing), you said that you "didn't put it in". I almost didn't catch it, but logistically, that feels like a pretty tough thing to do. If I were making this video, I wouldn't know what edits I would make until I'm actually at the editing program, but it speaks to your videomaking abilities if you're able to make calls like that "on set". It really makes it feel like your video has some pretty great production! Not that I can say those kinds of things as a nobody, but I just think it's cool.

Suggestion for a video and duel. What about Triple Threat and Fatal Four Way duels?

The trap cards are purple just not the one people associate the word with normally, most people think of the deep purple more often when the color is mentioned but the purple color group does include more pink color tones like magenta, or fuchsia the trap cards are more pinkish purple and imo over the years gotten more pinkish about it,

I had some "learn to play" yugioh tapes. Being before the internet, it was really fun to watch them as a kid. It was like watching a let's play today. I also didn't have anywhere to really play the game, so it was cool to see actual dueling.

My friends and i actually figured out the “MST negates things” myth back in the day while we were playing one of the Gameboy games, since local tournaments werent really a big thing then (at least where i lived), we didnt have anyone to ask about the specific rulings and we basically kind of figured everything out on our own.
