Best of luck with the new project, if you stick as many cattle as you can on that old wig don’t bother giving them silage give them a couple of kgs of meal a day and get them onto it yesterday! We took a place like this a few years ago and we didn’t get the cattle on to it soon enough most of the place was a waste of time that summer but we did take in sheep the next winter and they skint it spent about a week in it with a digger either digging up or burying the stones we couldn’t move oh and we put a couple of tons of lime to the acre on it straight away when we got it and that did sweeten the grass enough for the sheep to eat it to the clay. Fencing was the biggest job in the heal of the hunt, the land owner in fairness agreed to do the boundary fence ( supplied posts wire staples gates etc but not labour) but the internal fencing was our baby, we are 3 years into a 10 year lease and I was in it this morning it is looking well ( wet as heck but there is a good covering of grass especially on the about half that we have reseeded) . The one thing about that old wig of grass is that it holds up stock great so get as many onto it as you can and then hit it with the einbock or a good rough chain harrow get the lime out on it asap and maybe you will do better than us and get some good out of it this year.

Good idea Phil. It ll save the world of time and diesel it be so close to the home block. Do as that man said. Put as many in it as you can. What they won't eat they ll track into it. The lime is a good idea too but get it soil sampled. Best of luck with it.

I think it would be very beneficial to your audience and young farmers who may be thinking of expanding their own family farms to know how you approached your accountant, bank, and the landowner to analyse the feasibility and suitability of renting the land for your farm. It would be interesting to hear the terms of the lease agreement along with: - The costs and benefits of renting the land, such as the expected income, expenses. - The potential challenges and risks of renting the land. I watch a lot of farmers on RU-vid and it's not all positive. Best of luck with upscaling.

Cut the grass with that old john deere mower and bale it. Then re seed it and roll the whole field. Mowers can handle stones if yuo just don't drive like crazy, greetings from Finland and best luck Phil!
@ernopekkala4580
@ernopekkala4580 6 месяцев назад
but remember, don't use the baler blades in stony field and I would say don't rake because the rake pulls all the stones into the swaths and then into the baler and I recommend collecting the stones by hand after baling before re seeding. there is a lot of work to do, but I believe that you will get the field in top condition

That grass will be better forage than you think - we tested some and it’s better than silage! Just strip graze it with some rough cattle - there is an unreal amount of valuable forage on there - I’d jump at grazing it off Just keep em moving in small cells to make sure there is some green in the bite

A neighbour bought land like that with a butt of grass before. He cut it, baled it and dumped the bales. With the stones, hard to do that. Cattle walking it into the ground seems a good approach. Lime spread in a few weeks would help break it down too. Best of luck with it anyway.

Nothing crazy about re-aligning and streamlining your plans, sounds very sensible. It must be hard to quantify the costing for this but if your not driving a lot of machinery as far just the diesel savings will help. Not to mention time. I look forward to seeing how you go about recovering this land. cheers!

Hi Phil, great video, as always. We bought a farm that looked exactly like that three years ago, 120 aces, hadn’t been farmed properly in years and years. Great sheared hedges down, got drains sorted and put a n some new ones,Grazed it all down hard with dry stock and sheep to try and get rid of that awful grass. Turned nice and green afterwards but grass growth was still very very poor. What we did in the end was, soil test everything, got soil index and PH right, out wintered cattle to break up the matted sward, and re seed in spring!! Now take 4cuts of silage off and a total transformation. If you want it productive, it’ll all have to be turned or cultivated (we disced twice and power harrowed) and seeded. Good luck👍

I lost 8 acres of mowing grass to floods last may, once it dried out i turned cattle in there for a few days to eat the best of it. I then mowed it and baled it same day, i didnt put any net on the bales. I just collected them together and shook them up in a big heap. They have composted down quite well, mixed up with a bit of muck. If you just top that it will smother the grass, will be a longtime coming back nice. Obviously stones are your problem.

The best of luck, a very positive fella looking to the future, not exactly how i would maybe suggest doing it, as far as im aware with 250-300 acres of his own land would be concentrating on it and reseeding and improving it, growing cereal, and contracting, and fewer cattle with no rented land and lots more of own beef through own farm shop, but maybe im missing a trick, maybe more rented land is the way to go???
@williambrown3762
@williambrown3762 6 месяцев назад
Ultimately it's all about identifying the most profitable areas of the whole farming/contracting business and concentrating on them, I know it can be hard to identify exactly where the money if any is made sometimes as it's all meshed together sometimes, ultimately I'm a supporter of farmers , especially younger farmers and those who identify changes that need to be made and going down different avenues and thinking outside the box, so many of the farms that I see that are staying in business have had to diversify somewhat, it's all about looking at your farm/ location for those opportunities, Phil has a great platform on here and social media and now the farm shop so he is on the right lines

Strip grazing, with hot wires, silage/balage/hay fed to the cattle, us sheep farmers could do it quicker with 400+ sheep in a mob, have seen someone do it with horses, then if too rough to work up, use a selective herbicide and then spread clover seed etc with a spinner spreader, thats what we would do in New Zealand we have a grass that once it seeds, the livestock won't eat the stalk, we can still burn but only once the autumn rains arrive.

Good work getting after guys 👏👏 I’ve taken on plenty of blocks like that, best is to crash graze it before the grass gets growing, big mobs of as big a cattle as you can get, dairy dry cows or big store dairy bullocks, strip it hard and fast. The quicker you can get it all off the better. I’d consider buying in or agisting if you can. You’ll find you have a very open pasture after, so you may have to stitch in or broadcast seed on. The land costs the same weather you grow a heap of feed or stuff all, good thing to remember. Good luck 👍👍

😱🙈🤦‍♂️ Have ye won the Lotto Phil?👂🤚😉🤣👍 Ye're doing the right thing Phil. The nearer to home the better.👍 Even if it was 3 or up to 10kms away from home, it'd still be good for ye to rent it. Ye seem to have to do alot of work with the shed. Just going on what I can see in the video. Aswell as the work on the shed, the fencing, the water setup. Have a serious look at the handling areas. Like the last thing ye want to happen after putting cattle into it, to do something with them. Is for them to wreck it. While yere setting up the fencing, set it up like if was a dairy farm set up, without the actual roadways infrastructure. That'll help ye alot, when bringing stock to & from the handling area's. Like what's already said, pack it with stock ASAP & forget about giving them silage. It'll be a waste of silage to do that. They'll only be interested in the grass, even if it's not good quality. Do soil sampling aswell, along with liming all of the farm. For now & maybe late into the summer, just eat it like mad. Once it's eat clean, ye'll know better about the stone problem on the farm. IF the boundary fences are very good, nothing wrong with getting sheep on it for the winter. I can see it being the 3rd year or near the end of the 2nd year before ye'll really know, Where's ye're going right or wrong with the work ye've done on the farm. Also secretly be saving abit, as it could go up for sale in the future sometime & it'd be a shame to let it go, with it being so near home & ye've been farming it for so long. Any young farmer either expanding there farm or starting off from scratch. Ye'll need to be able to get Grant's on that farm. If ye're starting from scratch ye might need to be working off farm aswell. So in other words if your going to the bank to get the rented farm,they'll ask you is there Grant's on the farm & are you working? Is you say NO to any of them questions, they're highly likely to say no to you. Despite you having a serious business plan done out for them aswell. Also for new interants farmer's the minimum term of a lease on a farm, can be 6 year's. There my experience of thing's in relating to banks & getting a herd number to start off. Good luck & hope it works out for you Phil & to anybody that's starting off. 👍
