This is on the eviction server. If you want to play with your friends I recommend scouting it before hand and try and see what times of day for you have the least traffic and play then Just a warning though that it is a free for all server, so your friends will all be on different teams

I really wish there was a way to turn it off, or at least reduce it

You can change beam and bridge opacity in settings
