Least terns are small terns who nest on our beaches. Adults have a yellow bill and legs. Last year’s chicks have a black bill and partial cap. They eat the tiny silversides and anchovies in tidepools and managed wetlands. Males bring fish to females as an offering. They lay their eggs right in the sand in overwash areas on growing beaches where they are well camouflaged by the shell substrate: This photo has more than 10 birds! By staying in a group, they can protect themselves from some of their regular predators, like ghost crabs. Their tiny chicks can run from the minute they hatch, and they are well camouflaged in the sand.
