If you want a more authentic and chunky mirror, you can just mirror polish bronze or silver plate (probably also nickel or German Silver?) with a buffing wheel. Also keep in mind that files are brittle and care should be taken when possibly flexing or impacting them, because if nothing else the broken pieces may be sharp. Also with them possibly bouncing around, it will destroy that mirror and anything else it scratches against over time. A metallic mirror and a seperate dedicated handle (bend one end and keep the other straight for options in use) will fix the issues

The idea made in this vid for the thieves kit is a very fun and creative new way of having it stored and being used. Most of the time in games or function I would have the kit be an organized and sectioned off pouch or pocket concealed inside of the sleeve or pantleg of rhe thief but spread across the entire portion of clothing as to not bunch them all up in one spot. But hiding the kit in a thicker/more rigid leather case resolves that issue of concealment better in ways too. Great vid and fun creative ideas!

On the topic of tool choices, your pick selection are extensive, perhaps to the point of redundancy. I would probably ditch all but a snake, a long hook and a diamond tip that will cover 99% of cases. As for adding tools, there are some that I think you would regret not carrying and wouldn't be too large to fit in the pockets you already have: - A traveller hook, which is basically a strong metal spike with the tip bent at a right angle. You just need a thin tool that can reach into mechanism and allow you to catch and pull enough to trip open the occasional poorly designed system. You would be surprised how many locks are unable to cope with being pulled at from behind a simple 90 degree angle. - Snap hairclips for holding things in place, and freeing up a hand, in a pinch it can also be used as a tiny shim for escaping some commonly encountered locks. - A tin matchbox filled with clay. This can be used for a number of things, such as taking a negative of a signet ring to forge later or, if the top and bottom of the box has clay lining, cloning a key you gained brief access to during the prep for your infiltration. You don't want to take the key and come back later, someone might notice. So come back with your own key to the lock, no picking needed. - Fishing line for extending your reach, tying things off, again freeing up hands and allowing you to reach things in places your meaty hands cant fit into. Around 4 feet is enough to reach most old-school sliding chain or lever locks from the attackers side of the door. - A decent flathead screwdriver. Remove the huge round handle and put a T grip on it so it can lay flat in your pouch. If you don't have the time or patience to pick several locks - take off the hinges of the door and swing it open on the reverse side.

may i also suggest you add a third layer between the outer and the inner with slats that can hold inserts used for concealed weapons (throwing knives or bo suruken [?] and since they are concealed you can swap them with steel bars or alternate them with such . so your bracers can pass as concealed armor when pressed and inspected but hide your thieves tools and emergency weapons . think when someone grabs you and feels something underneath the leather . when confronted you merely show the steel bar and explain how you have hidden splint armored bracers . (which would fall in place with your roguish character. ) also would you consider making a pair for me ?
@ShugoAWay
@ShugoAWay Год назад
Eh a lil overengineered and your picks are a bit oversized, your tension wrench isn't going to be springy enough, and they aren't going to be easy to get to if you get "thrown in irons" but it's easy to find fault and harder to give solutions so Move the access point to the edge of the bracers (and can have the handles be part of the decor of the armor like a hollowed animal tooth), get a way better tension wrench from an old windshield wiper, and for the mirror on a pole get a old telescopic metal antenna/pointer so you can extend the mirror to see under doors and not have to expose yourself at the corner as much And moving onto the picks there's really 5 main tools that can deal with most locks and that is 2 main hooks, rake, padlock shim, and a wheel decoder

Fun lockpicker facts: -Master Lock is the biggest scam. Their "unpuckable, industrial" locks are used by LOW-RANKING pickers to practice on. Other, BETTER MADE locks are suggested most times for practice, such as Abus, since Master Lock is so horribly made. Master Lock is the laughing stock among lockpickers. -In the amount of time it would take a lockpicker who isn't LockPickingLawyer to pick your home locks, your standard break-in-&-get-out thief would already have broken off the lock, got in, stolen what they want, & be down the road by the time the lockpicker unlocked the door. That's why it's mainly only learned for fun & profession nowadays. Hollywood is a lie.

While he and I arrive at a lot of the same conclusions, our methods of problem solving are very different. I will often see little things that give me ideas to drastically change the way I work, sometimes in situations completely unrelated to the video. Most of the leathercraft channels I'm subscribed to follow the same general procedures, so it's really refreshing to see different approaches.

A “almost realistic” thing for you to add to your set of tools: metal key blanks or flats. You can use the file to cut a key to match the actual key that was lifted. If you only have a moment with a key you can use a torch or piece of pitch soaked rope to make a smoky flame and soot the key, press a piece of cloth against the key (be careful it was just in a flame) to transfer the pattern. Option 2 is to press the key against the leather of your gauntlet to again form an impression. In fact you could keep a couple key sized pieces of leather with a scribed “fold line” in your kit as a fantasy equivalent to a box with modeling clay for impressioning keys. As for tools, you need a pick that’s just a long point like a probe for helping find loose stones and getting things too far for fingers

Awesome stuff, as always! I'd like to contribute some leatherworking tips and tricks: 1) when carving that quilted pattern on leather, a better tooling sequence would be to bevel the lines first and then use the seeder. 2) in order to make those bevelled lines nicer and hide those bevelling marks, you could drag that beveler (or a carving spoon!) along the line you just finished bevelling. 3) you might want to reinforce those keepers with a couple stitches or a staple!

To make your tooling lines look a lot smoother and not so jagged you can take three extra tips and level up your leatherworking with me. 😸👍 First: keep your tool straight 90 degrees to the leather and use consistent force. For me that point is just when the tool by hammering sticks a bit to the mallet and bounces just enough to effortlessly move it to the next hit. Second: use half-steps. Don't move your tool all it's width with each step. Rather make it overlap around 30-50% of the previous hit. That way you're less likely to have stairways. Third: after you're done with hammering edges use the tool itself and simply drag it along the edge with light to medium pressure. Some would even use special tool called "spoon" but I can't yet afford to try it out and recommend or debunk. Using just the beveler works like a charm to me. Good luck and keep leveling up you. 👋😸👍

DO NOT DO CHROME TAN ON ITEMS THAT ARE GOING TO BE TOUCHING SKIN!!! It will trigger allergies, and is hella toxic to make, too. Use Veg tan, or at least finished with Veg tan over a chrome tan. That will at least clean the chrome tanning solution off thoroughly. Also, something I have recently learned, when sewing on leather: use linen thread. It won't decay like cotton, or break over time like synthetic.

The only thing I'd change about this project is NOT making or using real lockpicks. Mirror, scissors, pliers etc, all fine. For the lockpicks, though, either don't include them at all, get something that looks the part but isn't actually for picking locks (I've seen dental picks used as faux lockpicks) or make them out of thin, flexible, clearly-not-meant-to-be-used plastic. Depending on local laws, you might be fine carrying actual lockpicks around. Why take the chance, though? Besides, I've never heard of a LARP that involves someone actually picking a lock.

These are great! When are we going to see the upgraded LARP character with all this new gear?

Something I suggest if you want to go for "realism" with this particular kit is making some lever-lock picks. They're for picking the locks that those 🗝️ shaped keys go to, and you can make them out of pieces of thick wire.

Skiving also means skipping school or work in the UK, interesting to know it maybe came from leatherworking

That IS interesting. I could see that. Cutting corners, trimming off the top.

3:37 - There's a reason for the old adage, "Locks are only there to keep honest people out." The trick is to make things just a bit more difficult than the person trying to break into the space has patience for -- or at least more difficult than other nearby targets.

BTW... love the bracers. I am now redoing mine to meet your quality standards. As for the sewing machine, they're just hating because they don't have one or are not willing to fine tune one. I love it!

I've been looking into scale armor. I've noticed that some scales are shaped like military dog-tags. Was wondering if you think using either stainless steel or leather dog-tag blanks and pop rivets would be a good hack for making some scale armor? What I'm picturing is using 1/2" strapping for the rows of dog-tags and 1" strapping for the frame with 2 x 1" buckles for each shoulder and 3 x 1" buckles down each side. That's my idea. How would you do it?

Such a sweet little puppy! Also Cl3ver I've been going through you back catalog of videos and I was wondering if you ever came up with a hot beverage container solution. If not why couldn't you just take a modern ceramic mug and Cl3ver it up like you did with the Dragon Goblet?

FYI let cops know you have this if you get arrested while larping so you don't catch an extra charge. Or don't. You'll probably get charged with burglary tools anyway
