[Leather Craft] Wet molding a leather Zippo lighter case

So inspired by this beautiful video, I (an admittedly novice leatherworker) decided to give it a try. Three times. Here are a few notes that you might bear in mind if you decide to try this: 1) Notice that he is working with very dark leather. I was using undied VegTan and the brand new straight out of the box binder clips left black stains right up next to the body of the piece that no amount of dye was going to cover. 2) Having learned my lesson, on try #2 I used leather scraps as "feet" for the binder clamps and solved my staining problem. However as the leather dried, it contracted and the gap between the top and bottom halves was unacceptably wide. 3) Thinking that I must have just done something wrong on the clamp up on the second try I soaked another leather scrap and clamped it up taking care to ensure that the edges were flush. Returning the next day, the gap was back. So... the only thing I can think of to try next is to not separate the top and bottom halves, clamp it up, let it dry and then try to cut the dried leather. I'm not optimistic.

Spiffy. I was contemplating doing something similar, with my Zippo. This way was the simplest way that I could think of. So, I'm glad to see that someone else did it first, and that it looks good. Awesome project.

My lighter fluid Zippo was put away into a drawer years ago. The refilling was killing me. Now I find that Zippo makes a butane insert that fits in any of their standard lighter shells. Ordered one. So, this video has now become very relevant. Got to love the internet for never forgetting any video. Again, my thanks for sharing.

I made a couple of these and I found my biggest issue and it was either my craftsmanship or the zippo itself was I couldn't get it tight enough to not slide off. I found that a coat of beeswax inside helped give it grip without ruining the zippo.
