Mrs. Tinkerer wanted a classy leather portfolio, so I made her one. Made from 3-4 oz veg-tanned cow hide dyed black. It is designed for a left-handed person, but could easily be made for a right-handed person by flipping sides. Filmed on the iphone 10 with the iphone camera stand. Logo design by Brandon Kettle. Video music is "White River" and "Lifting Dreams" both by Aakash Gandhi, and "First Sleep" by Sir Cubworth.

Hey Andy, very nicely done. I like the custom acrylic template for it. Leather balm is my go to, it adds a nice sheen and protects the leather as well.

Another enjoyable and informative video, Mr. Tinkerer! Your ability to hold the viewer's attention is becoming legendary. I watch many RU-vid videos and yours are at the top of the list relative to production quality. Being a left-hander I can appreciate Mrs. Tinkerer's desire to have a left-handed portfolio. Keep producing these great videos!

Love it! I would have made the tablet on the left side be so you could put the paper pad in either end by leaving a slot on the other end, too...thus making it for either left or right handed use.

Thanks Jane! That's a great idea. If I make another one, I definitely will do that! I also learned that I will wait until closer to the end to attach the snap. It snaps shut as it is, but it's a tight fit. If I waited, I could have had a better feel for the snap placement and given it a bit more wiggle room. Thanks again for commenting and watching, and thanks for the great suggestion!

Nicely done. I have a question - if you wanted to make one of the small pockets have a little more capacity, would it be better to cut the leather a tiny bit larger - or will it naturally stretch some with use?
@thetennesseetinkerer
@thetennesseetinkerer 5 лет назад
Thanks Joe! It will stretch a bit as you use it. I suppose you could also cut the top layer a little larger than the bottom as well. The only problem I foresee with the later method is bunching of excess leather in the corners. You could alleviate this issue by making a couple of cuts in each corner and taking out the excess before you adhere it. Much like an upholsterer would do when excess fabric bunches up. Thanks again for the comment and view!

Looking to get into leather work...would this be an ok starter project?
@thetennesseetinkerer
@thetennesseetinkerer Год назад
Bert, first off, thanks for watching and for commenting! This project is not particularly difficult, but it is rather involved with lots of parts and pieces. You just have to make sure your dimensions are sized to the notepad you are using. A better starter project for leather may be something such as a knife sheath (I have a video on this) or maybe one of the precut projects you can buy at the leather stores (Tandy, Weaver, etc). Those give you practice sewing and assembling but skip the cutting and measuring step. Any way you go, good luck with your future projects and thanks again!

Can u provide the measurements to the acrylic templates? I’d like to make one like that

Thanks David for commenting and watching! I really don't have a good way to relay all the detailed measurements of the pockets and holders, but I will do the best I can with the overall measurements of the templates. The main template that makes up the outside of the portfolio measures 12-1/2" x 23" (including the "envelope" flap- 20" not including it). The template for the non-tablet side measures 12-1/2" x 9-1/8", and the one that holds the tablet is 11" x 9-1/8". If i was to do it again though, i think I would make all of these slightly larger because I found that when you start adding contents to the portfolio, it swells up and gets really tight. A little extra built in width would allow for more room for expansion when stuffed with contents. I hope this helps. Thanks again!

How much would it cost? I would like to order a right handed one in light brown, caramel, or honey color. If you can make it with goat skin, or suede will be even better.

Peter, thanks for the view and the comment. I don't make things to sell. This is just a hobby of mine that I do for fun. Thanks again!

Did you use the same oz leather for everything

Thanks for watching and for the question Cynthia! I did indeed use the same oz leather for the whole project. I believe it was a 3-4 oz hide. Thanks again!
