I have several leather motorcycle jackets I’ve had for decades. I found two of them pretty covered with mold. They were hanging in my garage. I learned on RU-vid how to remove mold from things like leather. solution of warm water with about 10% lemon juice.. I used a small sponge, and, like a miracle, wiping that solution squeezed out of a sponge over that moldy leather, removed the Mold just as fast as I could wipe it off. It was as though I was wiping a chalkboard with a wet sponge to remove residue of chalk. It worked instantly.

Thank you so much! My brother was a hoarder. He passed away and left his house to us to clean out. He had several amazing leather jackets that were full of mold......Now I know how to clean and condition them!

Just use a spray bottle full of water and little alcohol!

Not that it is actually impossible to clean mold without speciality chemicals designed for the purpouse. 70% ethanol actualy kills mold and it's spores completely if applied properly, but could damage the leather and strip the paint. The only usefull thing you can do to protect leather against mold is to clean it frequently, always keep it in well ventilated rooms, never put it away in closet for months at the time. Put it in direct sunlight for a couple of hours, always dry it out thouroughly after it has gotten wet.

Thank You, 3 leather jackets in my closet have some mold. I believe I will look into a small steam cleaner. that process looks to have worked well.

I would have used vinegar to kill the mold .Then clean the jacket 3-4 times with saddle soap .Then steam it .After that let it hang dry for 1 month and check if the Mold came back .Then condition it multiple times with thin coats .Then add a leather oil paint to refresh the fish .Last step add a little bit of a wax to seal every thing in.

Jens Roßbroich That sounds like a great process! The steam cleaning worked fantastic for me & the mold has never come back. I also like to condition my leather, especially after cleaning! Thanks for watching.

to clean mold off leather use a 50/50 mixture white vinegar and water... the vinegar will help with the moldy smell and kill the spores to deter mold regrowth.... after wetting with the mixture use a soft bristle brush to lightly scrub the moldy areas- then rinse with minimum water and allow to dry completely and then treat the leather with a good quality leather product...

I have a question. My jacket has leather sleeves and it's gone from bright red to pretty much black. The rest of the jacket is wool and the inner part is some kind of silky material.. It's been in my shed for about 8 years. The jacket has sentimental value so I want to "restore" it. How to go about it?

I used a strong dilution of bleach and it worked well. apply outside due to fumes but bleach will kill the mold and spores.did not hurt my leather but I was dying it anyway.

I guess I will get the Lysol spray cleaner for the inside of the coats; for they're not showing any damage. but it was on the inside of the black smooth leather. I thought I was going to have to throw them away but it came right off.

You can never get rid of the smell of bad mildew. I had an antique business for many years and tried everything to get rid of the awful mildew smell on some leather items. Tried steaming, freezing, wiping, spraying - everything. The vile stink always comes back.
@Marsupioll
@Marsupioll 2 года назад
I had no issues with any lingering smells on my jackets, however they are not antiques and didn't sit with mold on them for months or years. I would imagine that mildew smell would be challenging to remove. That's why I keep up on consistent cleanings. Unfortunately I live in a very humid environment so mold grows quickly!

safely remove musty smell from leather shoes by lightly spaying a decent low smelling antiperspirant non powdery type is best, spray allover once, bag it up for a day then air out. repeat if any musty smell lingers i advise to use on unseen patches of expensive coats and the like just for peace of mind.i have used this method many times on expensive shoes as non of the other methods worked at all. it is not one odour overtaking another, the antiperspirant just deletes mouldy odour.

@erabhikdasgupta

As long as your jacket is not hand painted, you can try ethyl alcohol, once you put alcohol and clean it, leather will get super dry and will start to break in few days/ weeks. If you have access to turtle wax ( brand name) then clean with that first. Always use bandage xotton to clean and wear gloves. So after cleaning apply leather moisturizer, then buffer and shiner. Let it dry and you have a brand new jacket. For interior cleaning, take some gasoline(petrol) and clean it and let it dry completely until the smell of gasoline wears off. And then spray some leather perfume like Tom Ford. 😅

I found that I had a leak from my refrigerator copper coil line. I have two closets behind there it went mainly into the other closet that I threw away many cardboard boxes but I didn't realize that it didn't really leak into this other closet but I had lot of clothes in there. I had to leather coats in there it is just now cold in Florida. and I reached for both of those coats this morning and found white spots on Black smooth leather. I didn't know what I was going to do I researched many tips on Google I watch this video. But I put some dish soap and some Murphy's wood Oil Soap and that's what I cleaned it with and it took all the white off and it left a nice silky finished. I don't have a Shark steamer like you do I wish I did. but it did the trick the Murphy's Oil Soap with the dish soap took all the white spots off and made it look brand new. thank God for the Murphys.

Andrea Stultz I’ve never used the Murphy’s soap, so that’s good to know it helped! I’ll have to try that next time I need to clean my leather gear. Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!

i know vinegar might adversely effect the leather, but what about cleaning vinegar, which is not as acidic as regular vinegar. good idea?
@Marsupioll
@Marsupioll 7 лет назад
I've never used either cleaning vinegar or regular vinegar. The steaming works really well, but I have to make sure and use a conditional after it is dry because it does dry out the leather a bit. So far the mold on the jackets have stayed away after steam cleaning them.

What brand / type steamer are you using here?
@Marsupioll
@Marsupioll 3 года назад
I'm using an old Shark model steamer. It converts from a floor mop steamer to a hand held steamer. I've recently purchased the Conair GS38R Handheld Garment Steamer and it works great. It doesn't have a microfiber cloth cleaning attachment, so I've just rubber banded a microfiber towel over the nozzle and the included brush attachment. Hope that helps!

cannot imagine putting steam into a leather jacket is going to get rid of mold for any reasonable period. Not enough steam to kill the mold, or not kill all the mold. Seems to me you are only relocating and hydrating the little fungi. Good luck with this method.
